Al-Shabab is described by the US as a large terror network

BBC: Al-Shabab: US air strike in Somalia 'kills 30 militants'

A US air strike assisting government troops in Somalia has killed about 30 Islamist al-Shabab militants, the US military says.

The operation happened near the town of Galcad, about 260km (162 miles) northeast of the capital Mogadishu.

Over the past few days, the Somali army and al-Shabab militants have fought for control of the town.

Friday's air strike came as the army was being attacked by more than 100 militants, the US Africa Command says.

Earlier the Islamists killed seven soldiers after storming a military base in Galcad. Somalia's Information Ministry said dozens of the militants were killed.

Top Africom General: Airstrikes Not Enough To Defeat Somalia's al-Shabaab

The Hill: Top US general on Africa: Airstrikes not enough to defeat al-Shabaab

The head of U.S. Africa Command (Africom) on Thursday said that U.S. airstrikes against al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia are not enough to defeat the al Qaeda-affiliated militant group, and that local forces need to “step up.”

“At the end of the day, these strikes are not going to defeat al-Shabaab,” Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser told lawmakers during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

“But they are going to provide the opportunity for the federal government and the Somali National Army to grow and assume the security of that country.”

U.S. State Department: Somalia Remains ‘A Terrorist Safe Haven'

Image
Long War Journal: Somalia remains ‘a terrorist safe haven,’ State notes

Somalia remains “a terrorist safe haven” and Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa, continues to control large areas of the country despite increased military, the US State Department concluded in its newly released Country Reports on Terrorism 2017.

“Through the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Somali National Army (SNA), and U.S. and partner military actions, al-Shabaab experienced significant military pressure during 2017, but the group still maintained control over large portions of the country,” according to State’s report. “Al-Shabaab retained the ability to carry out high-profile attacks using vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), suicide bombings, mortars, and small arms.”

At least nine people were killed in an attack on Somalia’s interior ministry, police have said.

Security forces killed all three attackers after a two-hour gun battle in the capital, Mogadishu, on Saturday, police said. The Islamic extremist group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A number of people, mostly government workers, were trapped in the ministry on what had been a normal business day. Witnesses said some staffers died or were injured while leaping from windows or walls in an effort to escape.

AFP: US drones 'wiping out' Shabaab in Somalia: AU mission head

Drone strikes by the United States military are "wiping out" Shabaab militants in Somalia, the head of the African Union mission in the country told AFP in an interview Friday.

The US has stepped up its operations in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation, targeting the Al-Qaeda linked Shabaab, which has fought for the last decade to topple Somalia's internationally backed government, and a separate self-proclaimed branch of the Islamic State.

"These drone attacks and others are wiping out al-Shabaab in good numbers. And that is good to finish with the terrorism," said Francisco Madeira, the chief of the 22,000-strong African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on the sidelines of the AU's summit in the Ethiopian capital.

Al-Shabab Denies That This Weekend's U.S. Drone Strike In Somalia Killed 150 Fighters

Voice of America: Analysts See Long Fight Ahead Against Al-Shabab

NAIROBI - The Pentagon says a U.S. airstrike against al-Shabab in Somalia last Saturday killed more than 150 militants. Analysts say the strike was a major coup but that African Union troops in Somalia still have a long fight ahead of them.

In an interview with VOA, Somali presidential spokesman Daud Aweys applauded the airstrike. He said Somalia was aware of the operation and contributed intelligence.

“We think that this was a significant victory not only for Somalia but also for the entire region as we face the same challenges on the war against terror. This was a coordinated attack in which Somali forces shared (intelligence) with their U.S. counterpart. These areas have been under a close surveillance,” Aweys said.

The training camp targeted is located 190 kilometers north of Mogadishu.

U.S. Drone Strike Kills 150 Al Shabaab Fighters In Somalia

Washington Post: U.S. drone strike kills more than 150 at Somalia terrorist camp, military says

A U.S. airstrike killed more than 150 people in an attack aimed at the terrorist group al-Shabab in Somalia, according to Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

The drone strike hit the Raso training camp approximately 120 miles north of Mogadishu. According to a senior defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly about the operation, there were no civilian casualties in the strike, though the Pentagon is still assessing the situation on the ground. It is not clear how many aircraft were involved.

According to the official, U.S. intelligence assets had been watching the camp for several weeks prior to the strike. The camp was home to a large group of fighters who were scheduled to depart in the coming days. The official said the strike was authorized because there was an “imminent threat” to U.S. and African Union forces in the region.

VICE News: Dozens Reported Killed by Bombings at Restaurant and Busy Intersection in Somalia

The Somali militant group al Shabaab bombed a busy junction and a nearby restaurant in the town of Baidoa on Sunday, killing as many as 55 people.

"The restaurant and the junction were very busy and the death toll may rise," Police Major Bilow Nurr told Reuters from Baidoa, which is located about 150 miles northwest of Mogadishu. Another police officer said a suicide car bomb blew up at the junction while a second blast, possibly a bomb that had been planted or a suicide bomber, struck the restaurant.

Ismail Olad told Reuters the two locations were full of civilians and security forces. "I heard a huge crash at the busy junction and as I ran, I heard another blast at a restaurant ahead of me. The whole place was covered by smoke," he said.

According to a journalist reporting live from the scene via Twitter, 55 people were confirmed dead and 60 were hospitalized. Police Colonel Abdi Osman said at least 17 were killed, mostly civilians, with 25 others injured.

(CNN)Explosions and gunfire echoed around Somalia's capital on Friday night, evidence of another spate of violence in the East African nation.

A large blast rocked central Mogadishu followed by the rattle of bullets, according to a Somali official nearby. Another, smaller explosion -- not to mention continued gunfire -- could be heard about 30 minutes later.

Somali security forces, meanwhile, rushed to the scene of the apparent violence, a Somali police source told CNN.

VICE News/Reuters: Al Shabaab May Have Killed 200 Kenyan Soldiers in January Attack

Al Shabaab reportedly killed as many as 200 soldiers in an attack on a Kenyan military camp in Somalia by al Shabaab Islamists last month, according to the latest death toll from the Somali government that would make it the deadliest assault carried out by the militants in their history.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud released the figures during a speech on a national television station, although Kenya's government has already rejected the figure.

"When about 200 soldiers who came to help your country are killed in one morning, it is not something trivial," Mohamud told Somali Cable TV, a privately owned station. The interview was posted on YouTube on Thursday.

Somalia`s Al Shabaab Is Far From Defeated

Reuters: Al Shabaab militants re-take Somali town from African Union

Al Shabaab took control of a populous town in central Somalia on Sunday after African Union forces left the area - the third town the Islamist insurgents have seized since Friday, militants and local officials said.

The group, which seeks to overthrow the Western-backed government and impose its strict version of Islamic law, has remained a potent threat in the Horn of Africa country after it was forced from the capital Mogadishu in 2011.

The African Union peacekeeping force, AMISOM, withdraw from Buqda on Saturday night, less than a month after taking control of the town, an economic center of the Hiran region, from al Shabaab.

Major African Union Base In Somalia Overrun By Al Shabaab Fighters. Reports That 50 Peacekeepers Were Killed

Reuters: Al Shabaab raids Somali African Union base, many killed

Al Shabaab militants stormed an African Union base in southern Somalia on Tuesday, where they say they killed 50 peacekeepers, in what the AU mission called a "heinous" attack.

The al Qaeda-aligned militants said one of their fighters rammed a car bomb into the base, in Janale, about 90 km (55 miles) south of the capital, Mogadishu, and then gunmen poured inside.

The African Union peacekeeping mission, known as AMISOM, did not immediately release casualty figures for the attack, which came roughly a year after al Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane was killed in a U.S. air strike.

Al Shabaab often exaggerates the success of its attacks, and officials played down losses. But Somalia-focused diplomatic sources said the death toll was expected to be "very large".

Kenya Bombs al-Shabaab Camps In Somalia

New York Times: Kenyan Fighter Jets Bomb Shabab Training Camps in Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyan fighter jets bombed two training camps of the Shabab militant group in Somalia, defense officials said on Monday, the first military response to the attack on a university last week that killed nearly 150 students.

Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, had vowed to respond “in the severest way possible” to the massacre at the university.

Military officials said it was difficult to assess the damage because of heavy cloud cover. Kenya has carried out bombing raids in Somalia after terrorist assaults in the past, and the Shabab militants, knowing what was coming, have often abandoned their camps after major attacks.
