Cuban Virtualities: New Media Art from the Island

September 5 – December 8, 2013

Koppelman Gallery and Remis Sculpture Court

A scarcity of resources coupled with the intellectual pursuits of a highly educated population has dramatically shaped Cuban new media art made over the past 10 years.  The effects of such limited access to digital technologies and the Internet on the island – compounded by a situation of extreme geographic, political, and economic isolation – has necessitated an array of creative solutions from a generation of artists born largely during the 1970s and 1980s.

Works by Mauricio Abad, Alexander Arrechea, Celia y Yunior, Núria Güell, Jairo Gutierrez, Ernesto Leal, Glenda Léon, Levi Orta, Rodolfo Peraza, Naivy Pérez, Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, and José Rolando Rivera examine the unique applications of digital technologies in Cuban art through video installations, net art, performance documentation, and interactive media.

Cuban Virtualities is co-curated by Liz Munsell and Rewell Altunaga and is the first exhibition of Cuban new media art held outside of Cuba.

from the book:

How do our retinal experiences alter what we think we know about
alphabet? From minimal to maximal, the alphabet is explored and
expanded on. From the contextual aggregates and combinations of
letters to the visual elements that form a single letter. The visual
poetry of alphabet insists that writing is the drawing of what and how
we think, and within that writing, images accrue, the letters
themselves, drawn, or otherwise printed, are illustrating or
reproducing our thought.

Nico Vassilakis works with text and visual alphabet. Nico, with Crag
Hill, edited the forthcoming The Last Vispo: Visual Poetry Anthology
1998-2008. He has published several books, including West of Dodge
(redfoxpress, 2009), Protracted Type (blue lion books, 2008), Text
Loses Time(Manypenny press, 2008), Disparate Magnets (BlazeVOX, 2009)
and DIPTYCHS (Otolith, 2008). Nico lives in Seattle with the poet
Crystal Curry and their kids..

Welcome to the Miami Art Salon!

DSC08394Image by gi+cri via FlickrWelcome to the Miami Art Salon!

Please mark your calendars for our first gathering on Tuesday, August 17, from 6-8PM at 801 Projects, which is located at 801 SW 3rd Avenue, Miami, FL 33130.

The Miami Art Salon will be an experiment in active, participatory, organic, spontaneous, collaborative art. We will work together to engage in and produce art in an experimental format, develop new ideas, discuss art, and share practices. Each time we meet, different participating artists will bring key words, ideas, images, movements, sounds, tools, etc., to the group to inspire thought, dialogue, and production.

Please feel free to email us with any questions at [email protected].

On November 2 from 6-8PM, we will invite the public into 801 Projects to view the outcomes of our collaborations. This isn’t an exhibition, but more of a way to invite the public in to see the processes and outcomes of an experiment in collaborative art-making and discussion. The shape it takes is entirely up to what we do from August - October.
