Etymology:
a- (“agent prefix”) + ké (“to chant”) + ewì (“poetry”). Literarily, “one who chants poetry.”
For us Africans, literature must serve a purpose: to expose, embarrass, and fight corruption and authoritarianism. It is understandable why the African artist is utilitarian.

Our Logo: The Moth and its Symbolism
At the heart of our identity lies our logo, featuring a moth. Why a moth, you may wonder? Much like the significance of “Akéwì,” the moth carries powerful symbolism that aligns seamlessly with our mission.
The moth, often overlooked in favour of its butterfly counterpart, holds a unique and profound beauty of its own. It emerges from the shadows of the night, dancing gracefully toward the light, seeking its brilliance and basking in its glow. In this delicate yet resilient creature, we find a reflection of the creative spirit within us all.
The moth’s journey towards light symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge, enlightenment, and artistic expression. In the face of challenges and darkness, it perseveres, driven by an unwavering commitment to thrive. Just as the moth’s flight signifies the path to brilliance, Akéwì Magazine serves as a platform to elevate BIPOC voices, guiding them to new heights and illuminating their artistic potential.
How it Ties into Our Mission:
At Akéwì Magazine, our mission is to champion the next generation of BIPOC writers and artists. By choosing the moth as a symbol, we embrace the spirit of resilience, perseverance, and transformation that underlies the creative process. We are dedicated to shedding light on the narratives, perspectives, and talents often overshadowed by mainstream media, celebrating the brilliance of voices that have long yearned to be heard.
Through the pages of Akéwì Magazine, we present a transformative space for artists and writers to express themselves authentically, just like a moth breaking free from its cocoon.
Thank you for being a part of our creative journey. Together, we’ll continue to illuminate the world through the brilliance of coloured talent.
With literary love,
The Akéwì Magazine Team
