As we move into this season of gratitude, we’re reflecting on two recent moments that remind us what’s possible when communities come together in support of a common goal.

Earlier this month, we celebrated the dedication of Hardee Street Apartments - a 132-unit community in East Durham co-developed with Self-Help Credit Union, that is now fully leased and filled with families who can continue to live and thrive in the neighborhoods they call home.

This resident-centered day served as a powerful reminder of what collaboration and long-term commitment can build.

In Wake County, our faith-based partners continue to play a vital role in advancing affordable housing. In support of The Carr Center, a collaborative development transforming underutilized church property into affordable housing, The Carying Place received generous support from St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a Wake County Community Capital Grant award. These investments reflect a renewed county focus on championing affordable housing projects.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are grateful for supporters like you who make our work possible. If you’re looking for ways to support housing stability this giving season, we invite you to:

• Support DHIC with a year-end gift that expands affordable homes and services across the Triangle

Volunteer or donate to local organizations helping families secure housing, food, and financial stability

• Advocate for policies that protect long-term affordability in North Carolina

Thank you for being part of a community that believes in a future where everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.

Industry News

A recent report from Kindred Futures, Roots of Wealth, offers a powerful and urgent look at the historical policies that created and still sustain the racial wealth divide across the South.

The findings are striking: white households in Southern states hold, on average, 24 times more wealth than Black households - that’s a gap of $146,000 to $6,000.

The report traces this inequity through generations of systemic exclusion, including land dispossession, discriminatory lending, and barriers to homeownership that persist today.

Importantly, the report also outlines a roadmap for change. Recommended strategies include expanding access to fair lending, boosting Black homeownership through down payment assistance and enforcement of fair housing laws, investing in CDFIs and Black-owned banks, supporting student debt relief, and creating shared-ownership and small business opportunities that build long-term community wealth.

At DHIC, we believe that addressing these structural barriers is essential to creating a more equitable future for North Carolina and the entire South.
