About Bounce

Bounce is a subgenre of Southern rap that traces its origins to the New York rap group The Showboys and their song “Drag Rap”. This track serves not only as a primary sample source but also as the rhythmic foundation for the genre. Many Bounce tracks directly sample or replicate its distinctive drum pattern while incorporating elements of Miami Bass, resulting in a sound defined by deep sub-bass, energetic rhythms, and driving beats.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Bounce music was heavily influenced by club music and often featured hypersexual and provocative themes, which helped inspire and shape Dirty Rap. However, by the mid to late 1990s, the style began shifting toward a gangsta rap-inspired direction, incorporating more aggressive vocals and street-oriented lyrics while still preserving some of the playful and risqué elements of its earlier form. This period also saw the rise of notable New Orleans labels such as No Limit Records and Cash Money Records, which helped bring Southern rap and Bounce-influenced sounds to a national audience.

Like other styles of Southern hip-hop, Bounce makes extensive use of analog drum sounds, particularly from the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines. Over time, the genre evolved into an even more rhythm-driven form, emphasizing percussion and groove. Its signature sound features syncopated off-beats, polyrhythms, and jazz-influenced rhythmic variations, all layered over synth-heavy productions that highlight electronic textures and high-intensity percussion. The synthesizer serves as the primary melodic instrument in Bounce music.
