Emo Trap is quite a hazy definition for what would eventually become Emo Rap. While Emo Rap focused more on emotionally-driven lyrics, Emo Trap focused more on the atmospheric production elements, such as signature heavy 808s and complex, over-the-top hi-hat patterns.

The overlap between Emo Trap and Emo Rap is quite substantial, with many artists usually falling into both categories, such as XXXTENTACION and Horse Head, among others, being prominent figures in both scenes.
