Plugg is a subgenre of trap music closely associated with cloud rap. It is known for its dreamy, almost atmospheric production style, featuring loud 808 basslines, sparkly melodies and melodic rap vocals. Unlike the production of traditional trap, plugg is minimalistic, with sparse drum patterns, frequent beat skips, and tight snares. Vocally, plugg can have different styles, from mellow singing to relaxed or even aggressive rapping.

Emerging in the mid-2010s, plugg was popularized through SoundCloud and YouTube by a wide range of mainly Southern hip-hop artists. The name “plugg” comes from the “Plug!” producer tag used by members of the BeatPluggz collective since 2013.
