About Screamo

Screamo (also known as skramz) is a subgenre of emo and post-hardcore that emerged in the early 1990s. The movement is characterized by math rock-inspired instrumentation and harsh, screamed vocals often paired with chaotic song structures. Screamo bands typically emphasize vulnerability and emotional intensity.

The genre grew out of the hardcore punk scene in the early ‘90s, with bands like Orchid and Saetia laying the groundwork for what would become modern screamo. These bands were integral to the second wave of emo, however, in the early 2010s, screamo experienced a resurgence as part of the emo revival era, with bands like Merchant Ships gaining attention for their pivotal album, For Cameron.

Another interesting phenomenon is the advent of “TikTok Skramz”, with bands like Oakwood and Vs Self gaining popularity with the younger mainstream audience. One notable example is the song “Yesterday By The Beatles Or: Imagine By Yoko Ono As Sung By John Lennon” by Vs Self, which went viral in 2024. This trend was many people’s first introduction to the genre.
