About Witch House

Witch House is an occult inspired electronic music micro-genre that emerged in the late 2000s as a response to goth, rap and electronic music all being on the rise. The genre itself is heavily influenced from hip-hop and experimental electronic music. It tens to feature a lot of samples, synthesizers, sequencers and chopped up or otherwise distorted vocals.

An important part of the genre is its aesthetic, which tends to include occult, witchcraft, horror, terror and dark influences for visuals. Many witch house artists include dark web videos (such as in some of GR†LLGR†LL’s early work, which showed bloody girls and activity of questionable legality), horror film snippets (such as ℑ⊇≥◊≤⊆ℜ’s use of The Blair Witch Project) or other forms of gory and Gothic content. It also uses many different unicode symbols for names and tracks, to make the music harder to find – hence, keeping it underground. The most notable examples of artists using these symbols in their names are ///▲▲▲\\ and GL▲SS †33†H.

Modern day Witch House has moved further towards hip-hop, and away from its electronic roots, in large part thanks to the Thraxxhouse collective, founded by Mackned, which helped to revitalize the genre with more hip-hop influence.
