Since their very first journey into the night more than 25 years ago, GREEN CARNATION have never shied away from a challenge. Founded by Emperor’s former bassist Tchort, the Norwegians quickly amassed a cult following while blazing their own trail through fields of symphonic doom, hard rock, acoustic plucking and progressive metal. However, from the beginning, there was one tale – or three, to be exact – that eluded them. Until now.
With ‘The Messiah Complex’, GREEN CARNATION have completed another masterpiece. Inspired by Arthur Rimbaud’s dreamy ode to Shakespearean character Ophelia, ‘A Dark Poem’ reads as a grand and gloomy album trilogy that takes listeners to crushing new highs and the deepest, darkest and most personal depths. Whether it’s the second wave black metal that drives Part I, the raw and aching ballads that support Part II or the bold 16-minute orchestral finale to Part III, the results are resounding down to the last epic note.

Green Carnation Kristiansand, Norway

By early 2006, Norway’s GREEN CARNATION had released four studio albums and an EP in five years — including their breakout masterwork, 2001’s Light of Day, Day of Darkness. After a 10 year hiatus, the band returned to the international metal scene in 2016 and released their album for 14 years in Leaves of Yesteryear in 2020.

This album didn't click with me at first. i guess it was because my brain was distracted because upon the second listen I realized that this is amazing and the type of thing that keeps me listening to metal. The soundscape, the atmosphere, these guys really don't miss. Thank you metalstorm for introducing me to one of the best bands of the 2020s. Can't single out a favorite song. It's just better than everything else - the riffs, the songwriting, the soul flowing from Nate's voice. This is going out on top. The craft and production make me think of a happy place between And Justice for All and The Black Album. I don't ever make Metallica comparisons, but Spirit Adrift is reaching for those heights here.
