Researching at the Boston Public Library: Home

Learn the basics of how to locate and access research materials at BPL.

Getting Started

Where Can I Find...?

Research departments overlap with each other. For example, Research Services and Special Collections both focus on art, music, and history. Think of Special Collections as the department that holds the actual object, while Research Services provides resources for researching that object or subject area. This is general guidance and not always necessarily true. Oftentimes both departments are needed to answer a query. Never hesitate to simply email BPL (ask@bpl.org) and staff will triage your question appropriately.

See the list below for the department/location of research materials held by BPL. See the menu on the left for detailed info on the department, materials held, and how to access materials.
