Cheryl Bregman with a young student
About

Meet Cheryl Bregman,
founder of Handwriting Heroes.

Cheryl created Handwriting Heroes to make evidence-based handwriting instruction accessible, giving teachers the tools they need to support every young writer in their classroom.

BSc. Occupational Therapy, University of Cape Town
M.S. Technology in Special Education, Johns Hopkins University
Certificate in Design Thinking, UVA Darden

The story

From the clinic
to every classroom.

As a pediatric occupational therapist, Cheryl saw the same pattern repeat year after year: countless children were struggling with handwriting. The issue wasn't a visual or motor impairment. It was simply that they had never been explicitly taught how to form letters.

"Students shouldn't have to wait for therapy to receive essential writing instruction. The solution has to start in the classroom, not the clinic."

Using her therapy-based approach, Cheryl's students made rapid progress, often improving in weeks rather than months. Because most teacher preparation programs lack dedicated training in handwriting instruction, educators are often left without the structure, tools, or time to address these challenges. Handwriting Heroes was created to close that gap.

Co-created with kids
Every story, character, and humorous element was shaped in partnership with children, resulting in a program that genuinely resonates with early learners.
Built on evidence
Developed through Cheryl's direct daily work with students, the program's sequencing is rooted in decades of clinical research and classroom practice.

The approach

Therapy-based.
Classroom-ready.

Everything in Handwriting Heroes is grounded in occupational therapy best practices and refined through direct work with students across a wide range of abilities.

Prevention over remediation
Correct formation is taught from the start through clear movement patterns and intentional letter sequencing. For example, letters commonly confused through reversals are placed in different families to build strong kinesthetic awareness before errors become habits.
Universal Design for Learning
Created to support children with learning differences, sensory processing challenges, and developmental delays, Handwriting Heroes provides the flexibility and structure every child needs to succeed.

Inclusive by design

One program.
Every learner.

Handwriting Heroes supports all three tiers of the MTSS framework, so every student can access effective handwriting instruction.

Tier 1 Core Classroom Instruction
Whole-class lessons using videos, songs, and stories — just 15 minutes a day.
Tier 2 Small-Group Support
Targeted practice with struggling writers using additional repetition and tactile materials.
Tier 3 Intensive Intervention
Structured one-on-one or OT-supported sessions for students with significant needs.
See it in action

Joyful learning that's innately inclusive.
