Gareth Swindail-Parry — Telynor Y Mers, Harpist of the Welsh Marches — is an award-winning Welsh Triple Harpist, composer, and tradition-bearer originally from Hereford, and now based in Newtown. Trained in the unbroken aural tradition by Robin Huw Bowen, he is part of a living teacher-student lineage stretching back centuries through the harpers of Wales and the Welsh-Romany Roberts family.
He performs and teaches across Wales and the borderlands, and has represented Wales at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient — performing to thousands and returning for a second year in 2026. Awards include the John W. Thomas Prize at the National Eisteddfod (2018), Young Musician of the Year at Cwlwm Celtaidd (2019), and an Alan Surtees Trust Grant (2024).
Alongside performing the traditional repertoire, Gareth writes original music for the Welsh Triple Harp — new compositions that sit within the tradition rather than departing from it. His playing has featured on BBC television and radio, and his compositions appear in film and documentary, including The Earth Beneath Margaret’s Feet. His debut album The Old Road / Yr Hen Ffordd — original pieces for Welsh Triple Harp inspired by his native Herefordshire — is due for release in 2026.
Gareth is available to perform at concerts, festivals, private occasions, and public events.
His repertoire draws from the melodic traditions of Wales and the Welsh-Romany music tradition. Music that is expressive and well-suited to celebrations, quiet reflection, cultural events and storytelling. He is equally at home on a festival stage in front of thousands and in an intimate setting where the instrument can be heard up close.
Whether your event calls for traditional repertoire, a bespoke programme, or an original commission, Gareth is happy to discuss what would work best. He is an experienced media performer with credits across BBC television and radio, with harp playing and compositions featured in albums, films, and documentaries.
