Running IE6, IE7 and IE8 on your Ubuntu with vmware/virtualbox

Microsoft provides free VirtualPC disk images for each of their browsers all you need is to convert them to vmware/virtualbox format with qemu help

http://blog.mozmonkey.com/2008/vpc-ie6-ie7-ie8-on-mac-os-x/

1. Download ie7 for example
IE7_VPC.EXE from this page

2.Launch it with wine

$wine IE7_VPC.EXE

then agree to the agreement
Image

you should see an file named after is finished
XP SP2 with IE7.vhd

$ ls -lah XP\ SP2\ with\ IE7.vhd
XP SP2 with IE7.vhd

3.Convert the image to vmware format

$ qemu-img convert -f vpc "XP SP2 with IE7.vhd" -O vmdk XPIE7.vmdk

4.Open VMWare Server and click File > New

5.Go through the wizard and when you get to the “Virtual Hard Disk” page, expand “Advanced disk options”, check “Use an existing virtual disk” and use the dropdown to find the new “.vmdk” file.

6.Finish the wizard and start it! (If prompted to upgrade the virtual harddrive, click “Yes”)

7.Ignore any driver dialogs that ask you to insert a Windows CD. The VMWare Tools should install these drivers for you (see next step).
8.Install the VMWare tools (Virtual Machine > Install VMWare Tools) as soon as Windows boots up. If installing the tools gives you a weird error, read the next section.
9.You’re done

i couldn't install vmware player on hardy so instead i installed virtualbox
and then i downloaded the jeos iso and created an new disk for it
i will call it ubuntu-firebird (4g image)

after installing it with
$sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose
i have added myself in vboxusers
$grep vboxusers /etc/group
vboxusers:x:124:mariuz

then restarted the system
this thing is really faast , it runs at the native speed , i like it and i think i will convert my
vmware images to virtual box ones
did i mentioned that is open source too ??

soon i will test kvm on my machine

We use vmware to escape spyware , to run ubuntu and then kubuntu
in parallel machines and without adware
When memory is small is time for xubuntu , also sometime
we try gobuntu.
Is like running an os in an bottle , viruses can't escape if you try windows vm
is good to reduce the number of servers needed for testing, and trying new stuff (ubuntu gutsy gibbon) or weird operating systems reactos , vista
or antique stuff : redhat, or centos
with vmware server we run many operating systems in parallel , each os distributed for one cpu
is good also for migrations from windows to linux and running both
just one good step to world domination and and fixing the bug #1 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1
