Science to Protection Pathway

Grounded in evidence and driven by partnership, our work links science directly to measurable conservation and restoration outcomes.

Through our Science Initiative, we help Hope Spot Champions gather and use strong scientific evidence to support more effective ocean protection.

We bring people together and connect partners, turning science into advocacy and action through international meetings and decision-making forums.

We support Hope Spots and partners to advance effective marine protection and restoration, contributing to resilient ecosystems and measurable progress toward protection of at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.

Our Chief Scientist

Dr. Tessa Hempson leads Mission Blue’s global science strategy and strengthens the impact of our Hope Spots worldwide. A marine ecologist with more than 20 years of experience, she connects science, partnerships, and local leadership to accelerate the protection of critical marine ecosystems.

“Our goal is to use science to improve the protection of existing ocean areas and provide the justification to expand those protections to new places along the coast.”

Our College of Experts

The College of Experts advisory panel brings together leading scientists and experts to provide trusted guidance, strengthen our programmes, and ensure that the science drives meaningful ocean protection.

Expeditions That Define Our Work

Mission Blue expeditions bring together scientists, explorers, storytellers, and local leaders to shine a light on the ocean’s most extraordinary and vulnerable ecosystems.
