Our Story

Over 100 Years of God’s Faithfulness

Mount Zion’s history began in 1900 at New Light Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina, where Reverend Neal Brown and a small group gathered in homes for three years. In 1905, they purchased land on McConnell Road and built their first church, which was later destroyed by a tornado in 1936. Despite this setback, the congregation continued to meet in various locations until a new building was constructed in 1938 at 216 Bingham Street. This church served as a worship center in the community for several years, until new land was purchased at 1901 Spencer Street and a new building was erected in 1965.

In 1975, Bishop George W. Brooks was installed as the senior pastor. The church experienced continued growth, prompting the purchase of a new lot at 1301 Alamance Church Road in 1977. On November 1, 1981, Bishop George Brooks led the congregation in a ceremonial march to their new building, marking a significant milestone. To accommodate increasing attendance, a second Sunday service was added in 1985, and by 1996, Mount Zion was hosting four services across two locations. In December 1998, they opened a new facility that included a sanctuary, daycare, and classrooms, with renovations to the original building completed in 1999.

After Bishop Brooks’ retirement in 2012, Bishop Bryan J. Pierce, Sr. was installed as senior pastor in 2013. Since then, Mount Zion has focused on serving the Greensboro community through educational initiatives and outreach campaigns. Under his leadership, the church paid off its mortgage debts and became debt-free in January 2019.

Currently, the church serves over 5,100 members on their 3 physical campuses located in Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, and Charlotte Metro as well as their online iChurch campus, which meets the needs of thousands weekly.
