ECU Tuba Instructor Performs on ‘Toy Story 5’
Scott Sutherland, who joined the School of Music faculty in Fall 2025, is a musician on the “Toy Story 5” soundtrack, composed by Randy Newman.
Sutherland has played for multiple big movies including “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Marching Pirates announce new drum majors
ECU Marching Pirates announces new leadership team for the 2026 football season, and at the forefront is new drum major, Trey Mosley.
Trey is a rising senior music education major from Harnett County, NC and attended Overhills High School.

ECU hosts Charlotte Audition Day
Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the ECU School of Music will be hosting an annual audition day in Charlotte, NC. Students interested in majoring in music must audition for entry, and this event allows for easier access to students in the western side of the state.
The audition day is hosted at the Northwest School of the Arts, right outside of downtown Charlotte.

Student composers get their premieres
Two new ECU Pirate students will experience music premieres this month thanks to a new School of Music program.
Brody Hilton and Brett Howard, who will both graduate this spring, composed music this year for ensembles at their high school alma maters. Hilton wrote a piece for a choir at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, and Howard wrote a piece for a wind ensemble at North Lenoir High School in La Grange. Read more HERE.

Music Therapy Clinic @ East Carolina University (MTC@ECU) open!
We are excited to announce that the MTC@ECU, an on-campus music therapy clinic, opened for service delivery on August 5, 2024. We are now accepting referrals and assessment appointments.

ECU Chamber Singers release Silence and Music album on Gothic Records
The ECU Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. James Franklin, released Silence and Music, their second album in collaboration with multi-Grammy-winning producer Blanton Alspaugh.
The album is released on the Gothic Label and is available on various streaming platforms.

Gardner receives ECU Outstanding Teaching Award
East Carolina University School of Music faculty member Catherine Gardner received the 2024 ECU Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award in April.
Gardner teaches studio voice, graduate diction classes and assists with the ECU Opera Theater.
A member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Gardner’s students have received various awards and honors and have been accepted into prestigious music programs throughout North America.
