American citizens in Nigeria may at times require the services of a Nigerian attorney. The Mission cannot act as the legal representative of an American citizen.

The following list of medical providers in Nigeria is provided for informational purposes only. The U.S. Mission to Nigeria cannot recommend a particular physician and assumes no responsibility for the quality of service provided by any facility or practitioner on this list. The U.S. Mission is unable to pay for medical services for U.S. citizens in Nigeria but may be able to provide a loan under certain circumstances.

We receive inquiries every day from people who have been defrauded for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars by Internet contacts they thought were their friends or loved ones. Internet scams are attempts by con artists to convince you to send them money. In Nigeria, these scams are also referred to as 419 scams.

The following list of tax preparation professionals have offered their services to persons residing or working in Nigeria. This list is not a complete listing and is provided only as a basic resource.

The American Citizens Services team is building a group called the American Liaison Network. This group is made up of Citizen Liaison Volunteers (CLVs). We want to make sure we can talk to U.S. citizens quickly and clearly if there is an emergency.

To vote in the November 2024 election, U.S. citizens overseas must follow three steps. 1. Request your ballot by completing a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Make sure you request your ballot before your state’s deadline. The deadlines for ballot request and return can be found at FVAP.gov. 2. Receive and complete your ballot. For most states, you can confirm your registration and ballot delivery online. 3. Return your ballot. Some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically. Others require you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials. You can do so by placing your ballot in a postage-paid envelope, or in an envelope bearing sufficient domestic U.S. postage, and addressing it to the relevant local election officials. You may drop off your completed ballot, addressed to your local election officials, at the U.S. Embassy Abuja or at the U.S. Consulate General Lagos Monday to Friday from 8 to 11:00am.

If you are a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (green card holder), you are responsible for filing U.S. federal income tax returns while abroad. You will find useful information on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website, such as Frequently Asked Questions about taxes or how to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

If you are a U.S. dual citizen or U.S. citizen living outside of the United States, you can register with the Selective Service System.

U.S. service members, veterans, and their beneficiaries can apply for benefits on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) website. The Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) may also be able to help veterans and beneficiaries with questions about benefits and services.
