
Rex Walrond
Rex Walrond is a student at the School of Medicine, where he combines his academic pursuits with hands-on research experience. As an undergraduate researcher at the McKnight Brain Institute, he worked with a team to analyze and organize data related to subarachnoid hemorrhages. His work contributed to a study on the potential connection between these hemorrhages and Alzheimer’s Disease. This project helped expand their understanding of these medical conditions and allowed him to enhance his analytical skills, which he continues to apply in his current studies.
In addition to his research background, Rex has practical expertise as a scuba diving leader, trained in water safety and rescue operations. His leadership in these areas has given him valuable experience ensuring safety in high-pressure environments.
Professional Experience
Rex also gained valuable professional experience while interning at Romark, a pharmaceutical company based in Tampa, FL. Working under the CEO and head of research, he collaborated with multiple departments to assist in developing new medicines for infectious diseases. His role required close cooperation with scientific teams, which allowed him to apply his research skills to real-world applications in the pharmaceutical industry.
Education
Originally from Florida, Rex attended the Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, where he excelled academically and took on a leadership role in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC). As Battalion Commander, he was responsible for 150 students, honing his leadership and organizational skills. He graduated with a 4.0 GPA and earned membership in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.
After high school, Rex continued his academic journey at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. His specialization in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience gave him a deep understanding of the physiological and neurological factors influencing human behavior, making him well-equipped for advanced studies in psychology and related fields.
Work and Volunteering Experience
Alongside his academic achievements, Rex Walrond has gained hands-on experience in various roles. While attending university, he worked for the Florida Parks and Recreation Department, where he was employed as a water safety instructor and swim instructor. His responsibilities included ensuring swimmers’ safety, maintaining the proper chemical balance of pool water, and teaching others life-saving skills.
Rex holds a professional certification as a SCUBA Dive Master, a role in which he has provided leadership in underwater courses and guided divers through their certification processes. His expertise in scuba diving is rooted in years of experience, making him a trusted mentor for others interested in the sport.
Personal Interests
Rex is passionate about outdoor activities outside academics and work, particularly skiing, mountain climbing, and backpacking. He has summited Mount Rainier, a challenging feat that requires considerable physical stamina and technical skill. Rex has also completed multiple backcountry backpacking trips through national parks such as Yosemite and Glacier, where he has pushed his limits and enjoyed the serenity of nature.
As a skilled skier, Rex enjoys navigating well-known mountains such as Vail, Telluride, and Park City. He has mastered skiing through both practice and the mental discipline it requires. The quick decision-making and technical execution on the slopes resonate with his approach to other aspects of life, where focus and precision are key.
