The Youth and Family Festival, hosted by the YMCA

The Youth and Family Festival, hosted by the YMCA of Escondido on June 20, brought together community organizations supporting the physical, mental, and financial wellbeing of youth and families. United Way of San Diego County joined alongside SparkPoint partner Lifeline Community Services to connect families with economic mobility resources and early learning support.

Through our United for Literacy work, we distributed 150 books to children and families, helping build early reading skills that are essential for long-term academic success and opportunity. Access to books at home encourages lifelong learning and strengthens the foundation children need to thrive.

Events like this highlight the power of community partnership, ensuring families are connected to the resources and support systems that help them succeed today and in the future.

"Book deserts" are real, and Katie Barry's fifth-grade class at Design 39 Campus is doing something about it. These young minds are advancing childhood literacy in our county by setting up a Little Free Library in National City and partnering with Words Alive, one of our literacy partners.
