About

The Online Subjectivities in Transnational Migration started in 2019 when Dr Helton Levy received an invitation to study borderland communities during the Venezuelan displacement crisis in northern Brazil. It was noted that communities of young Venezuelans did not identify themselves with portraits of them published by mainstream media and preferred online channels to carve out their own presence.

Since then, the project has grown to include the participation of Prof Jennifer Harding from London Metropolitan University and has started to look at other communities.

In 2024, Prof Harding and Dr Levy started to investigate the digital contention among communities applying for the EU Settlement Scheme in the UK, either for advice or for sharing other forms of messages. The project follows in 2025 and intends to encompass other forms of affiliation and oral history.
