![]() | Why We Created This DirectoryThe presence of a doula during pregnancy and childbirth is valuable for all mothers but especially beneficial for Black mothers. Many Black mothers feel that they are not given enough support and respect during childbirth. A doula, in particular a Black doula, can provide an extra layer of comfort, advocacy, and respect during this time. This directory, the largest of its kind, has been designed to help Black families find doulas that look like them and who understand the unique challenges, and concerns faced by Black families. By providing easy access to qualified Black doulas, Black families can be more empowered to take control of their pregnancy and birth. |
What is a Doula?A doula is a birth professional trained to help women and families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Doulas are not considered medical providers. They do not diagnose or prescribe treatments or medications but rather help families navigate the medical system so that they can make more informed decisions. Doulas provide education and guidance during pregnancy. By having a doula present during the birth experience, mothers can feel more empowered and supported throughout their journey. | ![]() |
