Euro Coins – A Quick Guide for Collectors

The euro is the shared currency of most European Union countries. Euro coins circulate across the eurozone, but each issuing country adds its own national side, which makes the series rich for collectors and useful for coin identification.

Denominations in circulation

Euro coins are issued in eight denominations: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 euro cent, plus the 1 euro and 2 euro. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins are copper-plated steel; 10, 20 and 50 cents are Nordic gold; the 1 and 2 euro pieces use a bi-metallic composition.

Common side and national side

Every euro coin has a common European side and a national side. The common designs were drawn by Belgian engraver Luc Luycx. The national side identifies the issuing country and is what collectors usually compare when building a country set.

Commemorative 2 euro coins

Commemorative 2 euro coins are legal tender across the eurozone but are issued for a specific event or anniversary. Some have low mintages and are followed closely by collectors; a few are often cited as most rare 2 euro coin candidates, although rarity depends on mintage, surviving examples and current demand.

What affects the value of a euro coin

The value of rare euro coins and expensive euro coins depends on mintage, condition (from circulated to uncirculated), mint marks, errors and collector demand. Estimated values in this catalog should be treated as a guide, not a guaranteed selling price.
