Auditions are now open for non-equity talent for the upcoming Mainstage production of Moonlight and Magnolias.
Moonlight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson is a comedy/farce based on real events, dramatizing the frantic five-day effort to rewrite the screenplay for Gone with the Wind in 1939.
Legendary producer David O. Selznick is five weeks into filming Gone with the Wind when he realizes the script is flawed and the director is unqualified. He has only five days to replace both — calling in Victor Fleming from The Wizard of Oz and hiring legendary script doctor Ben Hecht to rewrite the adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel StageAgent+1. The catch: Hecht has never read the book.
Selznick locks Hecht, Fleming, and his assistant Miss Poppenghul in his office, providing only peanuts and bananas as sustenance, to complete the screenplay. The trio must act out the novel’s scenes for Hecht to type, while navigating clashes, exhaustion, and the pressure of Hollywood’s biggest project.
Rehearsals will begin in mid-August and will be scheduled three evenings per week (weeknights predominantly unless cast chooses weekend rehearsals.)
Actors of all ages, looks, ethnicities and experience are encouraged to audition.
THE ROLES:
-
David O. Selznick – (Male to play 25-55) The legendary Hollywood producer who halts production of Gone with the Wind and locks Hecht and Fleming in his office for five days, subsisting on bananas and peanuts until a new screenplay is complete. He is driven, high-pressure, and occasionally catatonic.
-
Ben Hecht – (Male to play 40-55) A sharp-tongued, pro-Jewish screenwriter and playwright hired to rewrite the script. He hasn’t read the novel, is skeptical of the film’s chances, and clashes with Fleming over creative differences. As a Jew in 1939, Ben has seen his share of racism and is often florred by Selznick and Fleming's vision of the story.
-
Victor Fleming – (Male to play 30-55) The director pulled from The Wizard of Oz to take over Gone with the Wind. He is confident in his ability to shoot any script if it’s written, and works closely with Selznick and Hecht to act out the story. The character of Fleming should show extreme confidence and have strong physical acting ability.
-
Miss Poppenghul – (Female to play 20-60) Selznick’s long-suffering assistant, constantly on call to handle his many requests during the five-day rewrite. She is patient but exasperated by the chaos. Miss Poppenghul will span the spectrum from well put together to near nervous breakdown.
