Hello,
I watched your video on securing LDAP. Very nice and simple.
My question is…
You installed the CA on a DC. Will it behave the same way if installed on Member Server?
Thanks.

    Hi Phil;

    They are similar but definitely different 🙂

    If you put the CA on the Domain Controller (DC):
    LDAPS turns on instantly and automatically. The DC basically talks to itself, gives itself a certificate, and hooks it up to secure LDAP without you lifting a finger.

    If you put the CA on a Member Server:
    LDAPS will not work right away. The member server tells Active Directory that it is ready to hand out certificates, but the DC has to wait for its next Group Policy update to ask the member server for one.
    If the CA is on a Member Server, the CA will publish its root certificate to the Active Directory Configuration partition. However, the Domain Controllers will not instantly flip on LDAPS until they process Group Policy, auto-enroll for a “Domain Controller” or “Domain Controller Authentication” template, and restart their Active Directory Domain Services (NTDS) service.

When one uses the great method authored by you to put Windows 11 on a PC w/o TPM 2.0, but has TPM 1.2, should they turn that on or off? I turned it on when I was seeing if there was a 2.0 driver for it – no there wasn’t – but I left the TPM 1.2 on. Should I have left it shut off? Everything loaded okay. Windows 11 seems to be okay, slow at times, but I’m wondering what gets encrypted when it is on; and if there is a specific process for turning it off? Thank you.

    Hi Dave;

    I always leave the TPM’s enabled in both the BIOS and Windows regardless of version. TPM1.2 can be defeated now, but 2.0 is still quite a challenge for even sophisticated hackers, and the new Pluton TPM is pretty cool – see: https://www.urtech.ca/2025/12/solved-what-is-microsoft-pluton-security-processor/

      Hi Ian,
      As you know, I put Win11 on 2 older Dell Optiplexes, a 7020 and a 7040. I found the 7040 faster. I shouldn’t be surprised as it is about 2 yrs newer. The 7020 had 16Gb and the 7040 had 8Gb. I think the increased speed of the 7040 was also from a newer HD as well. I have just added another 8Gb to the 7040, and I’ve been researching SSDs since the 7040 has a M.2 connector in it. Since there is a PC repair shop here that has a good price on SATA SSDs, the Kingston A400 (1TB=$100, 240GB=$34), I was thinking of putting one of them in, but I would have to take out the WD Blue HD, since there is only one 3.5″ slot, and no room for the A400. Since the M.2 would be much faster, I was thinking that I should wait for them to maybe come down in price? Thanks in advance for your reply. from the old guy in the Soo.

    Hi Ravi;

    You have to upgrade to Server 2016, then you can upgrade to 2019, 2022 or 225.

    Hi Ross, if you are in Southern Alberta we do recover data from dead disks but we do not work via courier as we have had problems withm them in the past.

Some feedback
“How to take the case off an Asus laptop” was great except, a lot of times what you were doing was out of camera. It would be less distressing if I could see what you’re talking about.

Hi, helpful info regarding Android icons. Thank you. I definitely have not come across all of those! I’ve researched, and haven’t found, this, though. There’s a white “back” arrow at the bottom left corner of my motorola g pure screen when I shut it off, even when it’s in safe mode. I do have every reason to believe that the phone has been messed with. I’ve reset it, and invariably, I leave it laying around to be attacked again. This arrow is a new problem, though. Any thoughts or ideas or appreciated. Thank you!

You stated that “That Suite Money” was legitimate. You are wrong. I received a cheque for $141.00 and it bounced!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is bizzare. I interviewed the law firm myself and received cheques (for people) and credits (for companies) without any problem, including my own for more than $200. If your cheque bounced, contact the law firm mentioned in the article.
