Schools do not exist to meet the demands of industry. They exist to help every student reach his or her full potential and build a thriving democracy, where everyone counts and participates.
Betsy,
You need to visit more public schools. You are stereotyping and out of touch. There is enormous variety in our classrooms, except for the standardized factory-style tests that Congress mandates.
I am puzzled. If Congress and the Administration can agree to give trillions to corporations, big banks, airlines, and 600,000 others, why can’t they agree to appropriate $500 billion to open schools safely, in accordance with science? What about the children? and their teachers?
Why should I pay taxes to subsidize a religious school that would not admit my grandchildren? That’s like asking me to subsidize the private country club that discriminates. No, thank you.
No high-performing nation tests every child every year from grades 3-8. That is NCLB requirement, based on non-existent TX miracle. Finland has no standardized tests. Others test once in elementary school, once in middle school, once in high school.
NCLB failed. Race to the Top failed. Common Core failed. ESSA made no difference. Same kids left behind. When will they ever learn that the feds can't run public schools of the nation? And punishments don't "fix" schools.
What we do know about Florida is that 61% of the kids who use vouchers drop out of the private school within two years and return to their public school, far behind their peers.
Years from now in Florida, we'll track the diverted public money spent at private schools, not knowing much about any successes because facts aren't gathered to let us know. Students will have been denied certain books & courses that allow learning & discussing #history. @NCSS
When you watch these smart and eloquent students teaching Senators and Congressmen and the media, you have to admit they are a great generation and had some wonderful teachers, who taught them to think and debate and speak.
