- I have viewed a video footage where officers in plain clothes are seen manhandling a suspect, during a search at a house in Maafannu under a court warrant tonight. This is unacceptable. I will be suspending the involved officers immediately and have them investigated.
- MPS just appointed its first woman spokesperson. Chief Inspector of Police Izmia Zahir: a graduate of the Singapore National Police Academy and holds a Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. Our intent is to engage with media & the public in more positive ways.
- Thank you all! With the Supreme Court’s vedict, I intend to wear the police uniform and regardless of what rank or position I hold, I will work hard to the best of my ability to restore public confidence in the police institution and improve policing overall.
- Between 9 PM and 1 AM last night, Traffic Police stopped 154 vehicle/motorcycles on roads of Male’ City.134 were found to have violated traffic regulations. 24 licences were forfeited and 18 motorcycles were towed. It was found that 41 unlicensed persons operated motorcycles.
- Two of our officers who were performing public order policing duties were spat at by a protester(s) tonight. We are still in the midst of the #COVID19 pandemic and have had the highest number of local infections today. Strongly condemn this uncivilised act. Will be investigated.
- I just met the group of officers who were involved in the operation last night. The PSC has initiated its internal investigation. The HRCM & NIC are doing their independent investigations to which myself and the whole Executive Team will fully support. Will not tolerate torture!
- A while ago we have arrested a male individual in connection to the murder of taxi driver Gasim Hassan. Very proud of the investigative work carried out by our officers. More detail information will be shared tomorrow.
- Thank you all! Intent is to embark on a better era of policing with an improved police institution. We have it in us and by the will of Allah SWT, we as a team will deliver this to the people.
- In addition to activating all internal mechanisms, I have requested the President of the Human Rights Commission to investigate the case of manhandling by police officers & submitted the names of the officers involved in the operation. Culture of police brutality needs to go!
- Incident in Maafushi in which our officers restrained a female tourist seems to be badly handled. I apologise to the tourist & the public for this. The challenge I have taken up is to professionalise the police service & we are working on that. This matter is being investigated.
- We can now reveal that the man we arrested last night is the actual murderer of Gasim Hassan. He has confessed to the crime and is cooperating with the investigation. A Criminal Court Judge has extended his detention by 15 days. Forensic evidence has been key to solving the case.
- CCTV surveillance cameras on the Sina-Male’ bridge & highway installed & in operation now. Preparations underway to install speed detection cameras, that includes automatic number plate recognition functionality. Kudos to our hardworking tech team. 👏🏽#RoadSafety #PublicProtection
