Please share! 🙌🏽 Grateful for the opportunity to present today to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee meeting on “What Can Congress Do to Address the Severe Shortage of Minority Health Care Professionals and the Maternal Health Crisis?”

Hearing about a Latina who has a 3.5 GPA (having to work 20 hours a week) at an Ivy League school and is being actively discourage from applying to medical school by advisors is exactly the reason why this system is biased, inequitable and needs to be reconstructed. That’s coming

I was told in high school that I was bad at English. I was told in college that a letter could not be written for me for recommendation for medical school. I was told in residency that I was not a good writer. I was told in fellowship that I am not knowledgeable about the field

The ability to speak Spanish should be a REQUIREMENT for entering medical school in communities where 1/4 of patients of the population are Latino. That means that every medical school in some states like California would require medical students to know the language before

Residency program directors: it is NOT enough to recruit the few underrepresented candidate to your program. It’s about asking WHY are there so few candidates? Rather than thinking we have enough applicants, ask HOW can we improve the pipeline and inspire college students, etc.

Had I taken my premed lower division classes at @UCBerkeley instead of community college.. I would NOT have made it to medical school.. another Latino student weeded out. Now I’m a specialized surgeon taking care of children. Why are we letting professors weed out talent?

Every job I’ve had from laboratory, med school, residency/fellowship and even my current job. I am working late enough to meet/know the evening janitor who is Latino/a. Every time we talk in Spanish and talk about family. They are proud of me and I am very proud of them.

I was rejected at Stanford for med school. A mentor told me to appeal, given the research I was doing, they obviously didn’t get the full story the first time.. I appealed/interviewed and accepted. You can ask around.. I excelled at Stanford. You lose nothing by asking.

There is NOTHING like the first time a student meets a physician/surgeon that they want to be like, looks like them or comes from their same community.

I had chosen. Gaslighting!! I have put my head down and moved forward through the toxicity to become a powerful voice for my community and my field. Anytime someone puts you down, you do not forget, but you do get satisfaction knowing that they were wrong.

After surgery.. parents tell me “You are the first Latinx doctor we have ever met!” I thank them and then tell them how rare I am as a specialist and how we shouldn’t be rare since there are 18 million Latino/a children in this country. #medtwitter.

I don’t blame these people, they are just ignorant (despite sometimes being a professor etc) and they are missing out! No one knows the potential that you have but yourself. Keep moving forward and with guidance you will find your path forward on how to contribute to the world.
