Today was my final Stated Meeting and my heart is full. Serving as the first Black Speaker of our historic, women-majority @NYCCouncil has been the honor of a lifetime. I will always be proud of what we achieved together, and forever grateful to the members and staff whose

With the resignation of deputy mayors, it has become clear that Mayor Adams has now lost the confidence and trust of his own staff, his colleagues in government, and New Yorkers. He now must prioritize New York City and New Yorkers, step aside and resign.

Our @NYCComptroller was arrested for doing what our elected officials are supposed to do—protect our communities. We aren't going to take this sitting down. Federal Plaza is full of New Yorkers calling for Brad Lander's release and the end of ICE disappearing our neighbors.

Federal authorities' detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident with a green card, is blatant authoritarianism. This is a civil rights issue and an astounding overreach that disregards the U.S. Constitution. It should concern every American and cannot be allowed to stand

This rhetoric has no place in our city and is part of a playbook to divide us and spread hate. It is dangerous and unacceptable. Council Member Paladino should remember that she was elected to represent every resident of her Council District and has a responsibility to her

Asked about CM Vickie Paladino saying @ZohranKMamdani should be deported, Mayor Adams says he is not going to specifically condemn her comments and that we all need to tone down the rhetoric.

This morning, a #Sikh worshipper on his way to the Gurdwara was brutally attacked in my district. This violence is horrific & needs to end. We stand with our Sikh community, our neighbors. We must come together to root out the hate that leaves too many communities feeling unsafe.

I’ve requested @DOI_OIGNYPD conduct an official investigation and review of the recent pattern and practice of deploying official NYPD social media accounts to aggressively target public officials and civilians in NYC— and use dog whistles that can lead to threats and violence.
Speaker Adams statement graphic with a gold border that reads: "Statement from Speaker Adams on Requesting an Official NYPD Inspector General Investigation of NYPD’s Social Media Policies, Practices, and Operations [May 3, 2024] The recent deployment of official NYPD social media accounts to aggressively target public officials and civilians in our city, use dog whistles that can lead to threats and violence, and convey inaccurate information, is dangerous, unethical and unprofessional. New Yorkers rely on agency officials to provide essential information, and these latest activities diverge from the department’s core mission and responsibilities. This recent behavior undermines public confidence in the department at a time when public safety requires stronger trust, and sends a bad message to the rank-and-file officers of our city simply wanting to perform their basic duties."

My @NYCCouncil colleagues and I have demanded @NYCMayor and @DOEChancellor restore individual school budgets with $700+ million in unspent federal stimulus funds before decisions must be made for the upcoming school year.

To achieve public safety, we must provide economic opportunities for New Yorkers who are pursuing them, not criminalize or push them into the justice system. Street vendors like Maria deserve to work with dignity and respect.

A new class of @NYCCouncil members takes office today. The work ahead will be challenging, but the great reward is in serving our constituents. I am filled with confidence that we will do great things for this City. Now, let's get to work!

The alarming rise in xenophobic and hostile sentiments being directed at asylum seekers does nothing to address our city's challenges. New York is a city of immigrants, and we are always stronger when we stand together united.
