Unfortunately, this piece I reported years ago for @NPR (longer version on @NPRCodeSwitch) is “evergreen” as we say in journalism. It’s about the use of dehumanizing language:
I am trying something new and I’m SCARED. (but excited!!!) All of this is happening while I’m packing to be with my father who is in the hospital, we’ve been told he doesn’t have long to live.
Joy and Pain
…trying to hold onto both things.
Fam: Coming at you this morning with some truly bittersweet news.
We are both thrilled and quite honestly, devastated, to announce that Shereen Marisol Meraji (@RadioMirage) will be leaving Code Switch in August for a couple of amazing new opportunities. (1/7)
This is my last week in Cambridge/Boston.
Damn, that was hella quick!
I’m moving back to the bay and becoming a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley. What a dream come true!
Excited/Nervous/excited/nervous…
One of the things I loved most about @NPRCodeSwitch was that it was a multi-racial and multi-generational team of journalists. Whenever we thought something was new or surprising- Karen would remind us that it had been done before. Her voice and perspective made the show better
It was a good run—21years—but it’s just about done. Tough economic realities meant NPR had to let go of some 100 employees. I was among that number. I am sad that I won’t be working with some of the fabulous people who make NPR. But I am grateful to have work that meant so much.
My last story as the co-host/senior producer is a 9-11 story that I'm pretty sure you'll only hear on @NPRCodeSwitch
I'll leave it there. I'd be honored if you listened:
"NPR must build a reporter/correspondent corps that reflects the diversity of the nation we cover." -- just one of the demands in a long list that is long overdue.
My beloved abuelo died last night so this is bittersweet. He played a huge role in making me who I am...
a reminder to shout out the people past and present who made @NPRCodeSwitch what it is, too. You know who you are.
Thank you for all you Do/Did to get us here. ❤️
We are excited to announce our first-ever Show of the Year - @NPRCodeSwitch. 🎉 In a year dominated by conversations about race, this show provided powerful insights, with personal perspectives from hosts @RadioMirage and @GeeDee215, and their guests. apple.co/BestPods2020
I had my first day of a Spanish for Heritage Learners class. This is going to be a humbling experience. I'm 20 years older than everyone else and all the shame and embarrassment over my lack of proficiency has rendered me SPEECHLESS. (If you know me, you know that's rare.)
I hope people use this as an opportunity to listen to our @NPRCodeSwitch back catalog. We have been telling stories from within various communities of color: the ways we are connected and the tensions that exist amongst us, too. A consistent conversation over the past four years!

Reading for pleasure again.
Writing for pleasure again.
Im starting to heal from the pressure and intensity of the newsroom and feeling so much calmer and happier.
I want to hold onto this…
Many people in my life have sent me a link to this piece and the one thing I want to point out from it is the SMALL percentage of LATINO/A/X employees who work at the org. What are we now? 18.5% of the US pop?
But only 7% of NPR?
NOT a good look.
