This week my Tory MP said we should look at different health funding models, essentially spelling the end of the NHS. I want to explain why the NHS is so important to me From giving my dad his hearing back to caring for us when my wife miscarried and everything in between. 1/10

Yesterday I payed off my student loan, whilst I’m pleased, it’s worth highlighting what a ridiculous and frankly shameful situation student loans have become. A🧵 below on how student loans have become a money making racket, its long term problems and alternatives:

Yesterday I got 2 buses and 2 trains in Italy back to my flight home. All were clean, on-time, comfortably full and very reasonably priced (and the train had nice beer…) Why we can’t have this in the UK? Is there anyone who knows better than me that can explain?

Next week I’ll be on strike and the media may paint junior doctors as lazy or uncommitted. Today I couldn’t get the car out so I’ve walked the 14km to the tram. Many others will make similar journeys today to ensure good patient care. We’re striking because we love the NHS.

Right political Twitter. The thread you’ve all been waiting for… my breakdown of best to worst letterboxes! Spoiler alert - ankle level, double shuttered, spring enhanced boxes aren’t the worst…. 1/10 - The ‘Mounted Box’ - the undisputed winner. Easy and simple, a delight!

I got a parking ticket at the car park last week whilst at the town hall doing council work as I forgot to display my pass (it was in the glove box). Did I put that ticket on expenses? Of course I didn’t. I paid it myself. Because it was my fault. Not Barnsley residents.

"The payments come from my listeners, I don't understand how it's justifiable?" "It's in her capacity as a minister." Financial Treasury Secretary Nigel Huddleston debates with @TomSwarbrick1 on whether Michelle Donelan was right to pay for her libel case with taxpayers' money.

That cost is being especially born by women. Repayment has a 27k threshold and is income related meaning women take longer to pay and accrue more interest due to maternity leave, LTFT working and poorer pay in general! My wife who qualified at the same time still has a 20k debt.

So students are being sidled with huge debts and then charged massive interest rates that most would never agree to in the free market. For students with longer courses (like medicine) their debts can be over 100k and they’re accruing nearly 10k of debt PER YEAR.

Some won’t repay their debt in full; but will have the weight of loan repayments around their neck for 30 years resulting in effective higher marginal rates of ‘tax’, meaning young people stay poorer for longer, which impacts spending power and economic growth.

Compare this to our parents generation who had their tuition fees paid and maintenance grants whilst at Uni paid for by the state. Instead we’ve now shifted that burden to young people AND are making money off those who pay back their loan in full via sky high interest rates.

Absolutely delighted to be elected as the first @UKLabour councillor for Penistone East since 1998. The road to Westminster for Labour runs through villages likes ours in Penistone East. The hard work starts tomorrow. Tonight I’m having fish and chips and a beer!

But the travesty is how loans are managed and the interest rates. Interest rates are between RPI and RPI+3% but capped at ‘prevailing market rates’ for post 2012 loans - which is a huge 7.3% interest rate currently! The current Bank of England base rate is 5.25%.

This burden on younger people is one of the reasons (i think) for the current unhappiness within the junior doctor community: Sky high interest rates for huge debts that we can’t get out of. This manifests itself in unhappiness, strike action and longer waiting lists.

It will take decades for even high earners to pay this off and will have had to pay a huge amount (potentially six figure sums) in interest. This is a huge extra cost to put on young people and inevitably impacts their disposable income for decades to come.
