It doesn't bog itself down by trying to explain or justify stuff like Garp's hat, the snails, the existence of devil fruits/devil fruit users, etc. It just says hey, this is the world this is set in, take it or leave it, and I think that goes a really long way with audiences.

I also think it’s worth pointing out that this isn’t Zoro pushing back against Luffy, it’s him pushing back against Nami. Nami isn’t part of their crew here, she says she’s just traveling with them until after Arlong Park. So Zoro’s just reiterating that they’re not a crew.
