It’s publication day for STREETS OF GOLD! Ran and I were babies when we started working together, 15 years ago. Now that the book is out, let me share some of the stories of immigrant families, past and present, that bring the data to life.

My kids found this West Point ring in the park in Princeton NJ yesterday. It has Patrick O’Neal USA engraved inside. Top says (class of) 1971. Help us find the owner! 🇺🇸

Excited to share research with you that I have been working on since grad school 😳 Question: what happened to the sons of slaveholders who lost wealth (sometimes tremendous fortunes) after the Civil War? Did sons rebound & join elite, or did wealth loss transmit to next gen?

This paper adds another data point to our understanding of intergenerational wealth transmission. We rarely have a chance to study unanticipated shocks to family wealth and follow kids to middle age. Our conclusion: it’s not the resources here, it’s the social connections

Thinking of everyone who is quarantined with someone whose method for looking for a household object is to open a cabinet, stare blankly inside, and call out “where’s the X??”

I was really pregnant with my first right after tenure. A senior economist (not at Chicago...) came into my office and joked “I guess you’ll never have to come to work again, now that you have tenure.” I looked him in the eye and said: “you have three kids. Is that what you do?”

It was production efficiency, actually. Take an econ course. Nothing else would have done a thing with low productivity.

Let me tell you a secret: Just got back from visiting my folks in Aspen, CO. There are free buses from everywhere to everywhere that leave every 5-15 min. They do not own a car and use buses or walk everywhere. I just want what the rich people have for the rest of the country.

Doing so would be incredibly expensive and inefficient. If you're envisioning a world where everyone enjoys the transit convenience of living in Manhattan or the near-in bits of Brooklyn/Bronx, you're having a fantasy.
