Hegseth isn't expected to call in or send a senior U.S. official in his place. The decision is the latest step back from America on its support for Ukraine as the administration pushes Europe to take more control of its security.

This is the most direct questioning Hegseth has faced on his use of a commercial messaging app to share U.S. attack plans in Yemen. Representative Seth Moulton, a Democrat, digging in on classification: "It's not classified to disclose whether or not it was classified."

I interviewed Kamyshin when he ran Ukraine's railways, and it was clear even then he was going to rise up in the government. He was so busy the only time we could speak was during an event in a Kyiv park at the "children's railway," like a Boy Scouts for trains.

Elon Musk, wearing a navy bomber jacket, exits the Pentagon with @SecDef Pete Hegseth. "It's always a great meeting," Musk said to the press waiting outside. "I've been here before you know," he continued, laughing.

News here: The U.S. and Qatar are days away from finishing an agreement to transfer a jet to the Defense Department for use as Air Force One. The Pentagon said in May that the agreement had been finalized, but it won't be until likely next week. W/ @John_Hudson & @DanLamothe
