I just finished a week of chairing our elementary school's Scholastic Book Fair and I have so many thoughts!
When we talk about the disappearance of MG, it is evident on those shelves. Our 4th-6th graders struggled to find books to buy that weren't graphic novels.

I had a pretty traumatic miscarriage last fall. Today would’ve been that baby’s due date. I don’t have anything profound to say. The last few months (and days) have been hard for many reasons, but today I’m sad in a different way. Just wanted to acknowledge that life for a beat.
Finally, this is a very silly soapbox of mine, but our school librarians will back me up! There are not enough books in the fair or Scholastic Dollars catalog about space/astronomy. There were two books on the shelf I can think of and one of them came with toy planets attached.
I saw #LoveSimon in a PACKED theater in Berkeley. During Simon's coming out scene to Abby, it was silent with a few sniffles. Then someone shouted "THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE!" and the audience erupted in cheers. The cheer that erupted when Blue was revealed was deafening.
I love graphic novels and want kids reading however they want, but our novels sold out SO FAST and replenishment only happened once.
Wimpy Kid and Dog Man continue to be huge sellers, but Sharon Draper's Blended sold out immediately whenever I restocked it. Kids want MG!
GIVE ME ALL THE SPACE BOOKS FOR KIDS!!!! I want THE RIGHT STUFF for kids!
All in all, it was a wonderful week sharing the love of books with kids and I can't wait for our Spring book fair so I can do it all over again!
The last year has taken a significant toll on me. I had a really rough miscarriage right before this damn pandemic started and I’m still not over it. I’m so low. I’m sorry. But tonight I made myself take a walk to look at the perfect moon. Trying to focus on the small things.
On a recent @Majority54 episode @JasonKander said that in moments like this, there's no reason not to just show someone the video in question. We can't keep accepting answers like this. Hold these officials accountable.
