RIP Stephen Lawrence, murdered on this day 30 years ago, 22 April 1993. In the aftermath of his violent death at the hands of racists, his family & friends were targeted by secret undercover political police to disrupt & undermine the struggle for justice. At least 3 #spycops..🧵

It's far from the case that the undercover police officers infiltrating activist groups "would invariably pose as the most 'radical' and 'extreme' activists in the room" I'm not picking on anyone particularly here, it's the kind of line that often gets trotted out. But it's

Interesting fact: I've interviewed several activists who had relationships with undercover cops. Those undercover cops would invariably pose as the most 'radical' and 'extreme' activists in the room.

One of the families who's dead family member's identity was stolen by #spycops has a restriction order over the use of their own name, because to do so might reveal which undercover cop had stolen that identity and he has a right to privacy. It's that sick.

It is simply not true that all the #spycops who infiltrated animal rights & environmentalism "always wanted to be the 'most radical', while attacking others for being insufficiently radical." Often the undercover officer presented themselves as politically cynical and focused

This is correct, by the way. The massive state infiltration of animal rights & environmental movements from 80s onwards was characterised by individuals (police officers) who always wanted to be the 'most radical', while attacking others for being insufficiently radical.

These revelations going public is huge. Campaigners have long believed that the targeting of women activists for sexual relationships by #spycops was only one part of the reality of the abuse of women by undercover cops.

Blair Peach was a school teacher and a trade union activist. When he attended an anti-racist protest, he was beaten to death by the Metropolitan Police. When his grieving partner Celia Stubbs started a campaign for justice, she was targeted by #SpyCops.

When the schoolchildren did this, the Met Police responded by targeting the organisers with #spycops, because of course they did. They did the same to every single cause deemed left wing from 1968 onwards.

#OtD 17 May 1972 10,000 schoolchildren in the UK walked out on strike in protest against corporal punishment. Within two years, London state schools banned corporal punishment. The rest of the country followed in 1987. libcom.org/history/timeli…

The Labour leadership have refused to back amendments to the #SpyCopsBill in the House Of Lords. In effect this means that #Starmer is backing total legal immunity for #SpyCops.
