My albums of 2025

Happy belated New Year’s Day! I truly hope 2025 was a good year for you and I hope 2026 will be a better year for you! (And me, hopefully!)

The rule for this series is:

Every year, I pick four albums I discovered that year. They don’t have to be released in 2025 but just new to me in that year. If I even have listened to any other song in a year before 2025, I cannot include that album in this list.

My first pick for 2025 is Kamasi Washington’s Fearless movement.

The album cover for Fearless Movement: A man stands centered in a striking portrait, wearing an elaborate indigo-dyed coat over layered leather garments adorned with colorful beaded necklaces and ornamental accessories. He has a large natural afro and holds a tall staff, standing stoically on a circular platform. Behind him hangs a large abstract painting filled with geometric shapes in red, blue, white, black, and earth tones, evoking a modernist or Afrofuturist aesthetic. To his right, a young child in a light gray outfit is captured mid-motion, slightly blurred, appearing to run or dance joyfully. The setting is a clean studio space with a neutral floor, creating a contrast between the richly detailed central figure and the dynamic energy of the child.

This for sure is my favourite Jazz album of the year. It’s definitely quite alternative to other jazz albums however, that alternativity is what gives the album its charm. Take, for example, the first song on the album Lesanu features some chanting which, at least from the other Jazz albums I have listened to, is quite unusual. But, I was honestly pretty surprised on how well it worked!

The song that got me hooked on this album was Asha The First. I really don’t know what to say about it. It is just a really good song.

My second pick for 2025 is Ginger Root’s Shinbangumi.

How the fuck does Ginger Root keep coming up with good albums and EPs??? The first one that I loved was City Slicker, then it was Nisemono. Ginger Root can never, ever release a bad track (or album for that matter) in my eyes. He is probably the only artist that I know of where I like ALL of his songs.

Also we have to talk about the music videos for these tracks. If you don’t know, Ginger Root partnered up with Adult Swim to create a 44 minute musical movie that is free to watch on YouTube. I cannot suggest this enough. Watch the movie.

All Night has to be my favourite song on this album. It is a killer song and it has a killer music video too!

My third pick for 2025 is Daft Club by Daft Punk.

I originally bought this at a record store. I wanted something new and, whilst browsing, I saw this. I thought in my head: “Is this some Daft Punk album I have never head of?”. After I brought it I did some research and figured out it was just a bunch of remixes and felt pretty gutted. I should not of felt that way as Aerodynamic is such a good track on this album.

The track consists of samples of other Daft Punk songs. It is actually a fever dream listening to it as if you have listened to Daft Punk’s other albums you will quickly recognise all the different songs. This is my must listen for Daft Punk fans.

My fourth pick for 2025 is The Complete Discography by Korea Girl.

A good friend recommended me this track! And if you are reading this (you know who you are), thank you! It is not my favourite album on this list or my most listened to, however it is a very solid and likeable album. It is a bit different to what I usually listen to as it generally does not fall into my mix of Jazz, Dance or Electronic but yet, I still love it and think it is a lovely album!

The album is more moody than the rest of the albums on this list. It is very simple in terms of instruments and I think that is its charm. It is not trying to be very quick or fast but simple and pleasing.

My favourite track on it is probably Reunion with B Side and Upside Down in close second. Overall a great album by Korea Girl.
