I did yet another thing no one asked for: getting the most recent version of the oneAPI DPC++/C++ running on and generating native FreeBSD binaries.

I have done a cursed thing that might have been interesting 10 years ago but probably isn't terribly interesting now.

I have gotten the Studio Developer 12.6 (aka C compiler) running on creating native FreeBSD binaries. I have a working oksh with this setup.

So that builds and runs on without modification, with the exception of telling it that we can use clang-13 (it thinks you need at least clang-15). Neat!

I got a this thing in the mail today.

I am teaching an SSCP bootcamp starting this Wednesday. So I passed the exam a while ago. Still nice to get the whole welcome kit.

One month ago today, I started learning Japanese. My free trial to Busuu is about to end, so I figured I'd take the A1 (beginner-level) test they have. And I passed!

Though I don't think Busuu alone would prepare someone to understand Japanese at all. I barely used Busuu because it was just so slow and covered so little. It's like it gamifies language learning, rather than learning a language. It also says I'm 17% fluent in Japanese which is like... maybe it's off by an order of magnitude. I doubt I'm even 1.7% fluent.

Over the last month, I learned 400 kanji via RTK, about 1000 words from Anki and reading books, read through 2 textbooks, got to level 5 in WaniKani, got halfway through N5 grammar in Bunpro, and listened to hours and hours of Japanese-language podcasts. And (despite the grade), I still got some things wrong on the test. But I was happily surprised how fast I was able to read and understand the long reading section. So the idea of learning a language with one of these apps is... yeah... But! These apps are great to get you into the rhythm of learning a language, provided you quickly move off of them and into real materials.

I will take the JLPT N5 in December, since this Busuu test is hardly a real test.

先月から日本語を学ぶ。今はBusuuのテストをする。私は受かる。私の日本語が悪いです。友達になろう。よろしくお願いします!

Oh hey look I got the new gcobol compiler working on . It's alpha-level stuff but it can compile quite a lot of code. Here's the ubiquitous hello world in . Expect a blog post soon!

Caricature w/ec

Oh hai. I just wanna show off this really awesome caricature of me that was recently made.

My mom, who came house looking with me today, amusingly brought up this little piece of paper. It's my first graduate diploma. I've never actually seen it before. And it's just about 10 years to the day when I had my first graduate class at Monmouth.

Obviously it's not the diploma that hangs in my office. But the RPI bookstores sells a double diploma frame (probably for our co-terminal students, who graduate with both a BS and an MS). There's no rule that says I can't buy the frame and put an MA and an MS in it.

I'm on the front page of QRZ right now. More specifically, my QSO Today interview.

Ten years ago today I started a wild ride called graduate school that saw me attend two schools (Monmouth University and RPI), obtain three degrees (MA Anthropology, MS STS, PhD STS), and land the beginnings of a dream career.

To celebrate, here is my first ever MA project from a course on ArcGIS. I figured out how to map the Sydney Opera House to find the optimal pricing for seats.

Moved into a new office this morning. There was some books on the shelves. Can't wait to dive into these classics!

I needed a new watch so I bought a new watch then I bought a much better leather strap and now I have a daily wear watch that looks amazing for not a lot of money. The end.

It's a Seiko SNKL23J1 with a black alligator leather band, for the curious.

Blackboard is the worst.
I am trying to paste a link I copied.
