30 Day Starting Skill Plan

ImageNow that Eve Online is free to play. I thought it would be prudent to put together a basic starting skill plan for 30 days. As opposed to my older guide that was written for 14 day trial accounts. The same general idea of having a skill plan that provides you with the widest scope possible in training. This way you don't get pigeon holed into any specific role you don't understand. Let's get straight to the skill list and I will explain specifics after.

Skills
Navigation 4 - 5% bonus to sub-warp ship velocity per skill level.

CPU Management 4 - 5% bonus to ship CPU output per skill level. Used for fitting ships.

Power Grid Management 4 - 5% bonus to ship's powergrid output per skill level.  Used for fitting ships.

Capacitor Management 4 - 5% bonus to capacitor capacity per skill level. Used to activate your ships modules.

Mechanics 4 - 5% bonus to structure hit points per skill level.

Hull Upgrades 4 - 5% bonus to armor hit points per skill level.

Shield Management 4 - 5% bonus to shield capacity per skill level.

Science 4 - Allows use of tractor beams among other things.

Repair Systems 4 - And no higher as it burns cap faster at 5

Spaceship Command 4 - 2% improved ship agility for all ships per skill level.

Target Management 3 - Increases maximum number of targets by 1 per level.

Warp Drive Operation 3 - 10% reduction to capacitor needed to warp per level.

Evasive Maneuvering 3 - 5% bonus to ship agility per level.

Afterburner 3 - 5% reduction to Afterburner duration and 10% reduction in Afterburner capacitor use per skill level.

Racial Frigate 4

See UniWiki Core Skills for an expanded list.

Keep in mind this is a general list that keeps you training skills all under level five. If you have an idea of the play style your looking to get involved in such as pvp by all means I would specialize as quickly as possible into a niche role you character will be strong at. This list is a suggestion, though these skills effect every ship you fly and you will eventually train them all to level 5.

Alternative Skills
Cybernetics 3 - Allows use of advanced implants.

Infomorph Psychology - 1 additional jump clone per level. Allows use of jump clones.

Drones 4 or 5 - 1 additional drone may be controlled per level. Allows use of drones.

Salvaging 3 - Increase in chance of successful salvage per level. Allows use of salvage module.

Gunnery 4 - 2% bonus to turret rate of fire per level. Allows use of turrets.

Missile Launcher Operation - I would stick to guns until you have a better idea of how the missile mechanics work in game.

Trade 3 - 4 extra market orders become possible at the same time per skill level.

Racial Ship Skills 4

Eve Mon

Eve Mon is the single best tool to use for creating skill plans. It lets you test out skill plans and gives you an idea of how much time it will take. It allows you to maximize attributes and remaps.

Character Attributes and Remaps

This could be a guide all it own but I wanted to mention a few things. Your character has 5 attributes, you start out with them almost all even. Each skill has two attributes a primary one and a secondary one. The more points you have in a attribute the faster a skill trains that has that attribute. You can Remap attributes and redistribute 10 of them. When you start you can do this twice after you have used up all your remaps you only get a remap once a year (in real time 365 days). Note remaps do not stack. Each year(character creation date to character creation date) you get one chance to remap. So only remap if you know what your doing and have consulted Eve Mon.

A quick example support skills and production skills are generally Int/Mem while gun, missile and ship skills are Per/Wil so you need to strike a balance in your remaps as you get started with the game.

A note about the skill que.

Alpha: You can que up to 24 hours worth of skills and your skills train at a slower pace than a subscription Omega player.

Omega: You can que up as many hours or days of skill training as you want. The only limit is certain skills have prerequisites you have to train before you can que up that skill. This was not always the case the skill que used to be limited to 24 hours of skill training and long ago there was no skill que I believe.

What are implants?

Implants are worth mentioning because certain implants give you an increase to your attributes so your skills will train faster. Right now you can pick a set of +1 attribute implants for 300 or 400,000 isk.

Can you lose skills points if your pod is destroyed?
You do not lose skills points if your pod is destroyed. You do lose your implants if your pod is destroyed. The game has been changed you use to lose skills points if you didn't purchase an updated medical clone with in-game isk this isn't the case anymore.

A note on skill training to make isk

Steer clear of mining if your only thinking about it to make money to fund your other activities. Why might you ask? Mining is time consuming and time is your currency as a gamer. Your putting off other more enjoyable activities to shot lasers at rocks. Now this only holds if your mining just to get some quick cash to do something else. If that is your mind set I would suggest ratting or missioning which allow you to focus your skill training in skills that will help you cross over to pvp much better than mining level 5. Also PI (planetary interaction) is good way to earn passive isk while doing more enjoyable activities. For example you want to get into industry and manufacturing I would point you to PI as opposed to mining.

Plan, Plan, Plan

You need to start thinking about what it is you want to do in-game because you will run out of ideas of what to train real fast. I make skill plans in three month blocks, or yearly quarters to keep me focused. So think ahead what you want to do or what your going to be doing over the next three months and use Eve Mon to start coming up with a skill plan.

What level to train skill "xyz" to?

Skill things up to level 4 until you get a good idea of what a skill does before pushing the long skill ques to level 5. A good rule of thumb unless you know what it does don't train it. Read about it first then train.

How do you ever catch up to people who have been playing for so long?

Just because you can fly something doesn't mean you know what your doing. Low skilled characters can have just as much impact as older ones. Also I mentioned earlier specialize on a specific career path and within a month or two you can be flying a skilled stealth bomber and enjoying your game time just as much as the next person.

Tech 1 Manufacturing Guide

The Goal:
Tech 1(T1) manufacturing is the basic level of industry in Eve Online. Typically you only need the industry skill at level one, a blueprint original(BPO) or copy(BPC) and the most basic of minerals sourced from the market.

ImageThe Plan:
What to build? Time to pull out your spreadsheets, you need to see how much it will cost you to build based on material costs vs what you can sell it for. First figure out how much it will cost you to build the item check out this blueprint calculator or Fuzzysteve's blueprint calculator. Then check item prices at your point of sell either in-game or on Eve Central.

Your next consideration is what BPO will you use? How to buy a Blueprint Originals(BPO)? Will you buy an already researched BPO from contracts or buy un-researched BPO from the NPC market and do research yourself? See my Blueprint Research Guide for more info. Don't forget to take into consideration BPO costs into your overall investment.

Where to build? Two things to take into consideration here.
1). Consider availability of materials make sure you can get enough materials it will do you no good if you buy up all the resources in your system and have to fly or ship in your resources using shipping services and lose your margins.
2). Consider the building index of the system or how many people are doing that activity in system. The build costs will scale up as more players build things in this system.  Areas like large trade hubs will have higher building indexes as compared to less used systems further out from major hubs. Go to your star map go to the industry folder and you can see the various levels of industry activities in various systems there.
You need to balance the two availability of materials and system building index.

The Skills:
Industry - 4% reduction in manufacturing time per skill level.
Advanced Industry - 3% reduction in all manufacturing & research time per skill level.
Mass Production - Ability to run 1 additional job per skill level.
Advanced Mass Production - Ability to run 1 additional job per skill level.
Supply Chain Management - Skill at running manufacturing operations remotely.

The Equipment:
Industrial ship to haul your minerals or goods.
Blueprint of the item you want to build.
Minerals (See cost layout below to find out how much you need.)
Station with open manufacturing slots. Note: Even if slots aren't open you may choose to "Get in Line" if for some reason you can't move your minerals to a new station.

Total Costs:

Image
I use simple excel functions to create these spread sheets. After I enter in the mineral amount from the BP in cell B4 for Isogen, I type =(B4*D1) in D4 cell. This function allows me to change my batch number and buy exact amounts of minerals. You can use =sum() to add up the amounts to get a quick grasp of how much things are going to cost. Like I mentioned before you can use some of the various online tools. When I started out I wanted a little bit more control than some of these web applications give you.

Time Required:
Five minutes to buy the materials five minutes to ship the minerals to your station. 10 seconds to start the manufacturing and five minutes to finish and haul back to market. So in total 15 minutes every time your manufacturing job finishes. Again watch the videos below to better understand how to really invest in manufacturing.

Note: As you build more items per batch you will have to wait for those items to manufacturer. For example I currently run 10 slots, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I renew my BPO cycles one day a week and I am building enough units per batch for a 7 day cycle time. This practice is similar to Planetary Interaction cycle times.

Blueprint Research Guide

The Goal:
ImageIn Eve Online researching blueprints allows you to run more efficient production jobs by having higher levels of Material Efficiency or ME and Time Efficiency or TE. Your manufacturing jobs will require less minerals and components giving you better margins. Alternatively you could sell the researched blueprints for profit or use them to create blueprint copies. Copies can also be used for Invention.

What is ME and TE?
ME or Material Efficiency reduces a blueprints required materials by 1% per level to a max of 10%.
TE or Time Efficiency reduces blueprint manufacturing time by 2% per level to a max of 20%.

The Skills:
Laboratory Operation - Ability to run 1 additional research job per skill level.
Advanced Laboratory Operation - Ability to run 1 additional research job per skill level.
Research - 5% bonus to blueprint manufacturing time research per skill level.
Advanced Industry - 3% reduction in all manufacturing and research times per skill level.
Metallurgy - 5% Bonus to material efficiency research speed per skill level.
Scientific Networking - Skill at running research operations remotely.

The Equipment:
Blueprint Original or BPO
NPC Research Station or a Player Owned Station (POS) with lab modules.
Optional: Implants
Zainou 'Beancounter' Research
Zainou 'Beancounter' Metallurgy

How to buy a Blueprint Original (BPO)?
You can purchase BPOs form the market from NPC orders with fixed prices. One of the few items in the game you buy from NPCs. These BPOs will be unresearched and have a ME and TE of zero. You can also purchase BPOs from contracts. Other players sell BPOs through contracts and are sometimes already researched. Buying BPOs through contracts is a good way to get around researching your own BPOs and saving time.

Where to run research jobs? Finding a station.
You can find stations to do research in either by using the in game map and looking under the info window of the station or by using dotlan maps.

Consider the building index of the system or how many people are doing that activity in system. The job costs will scale up as more players run jobs in the system.  Areas like large trade hubs will have higher building indexes as compared to less populated areas further out from major hubs. Go to your star map, choose the industry folder and you can see the various levels of industry activities in various systems there.

Time Required:
Set up and starting a research job takes only a few minutes. The research job time itself will scale up depending on the level of research and the type of blueprint. Tech 1 module blueprints will research to max levels in only a few days. Where as a capital ship blueprints will take months or even years to research perfect ME and TE levels.

Eve Online: Basic PI (Planetary Interaction) Video Guide

When I first started this blog the first guide I wrote was a PI guide so it's only fitting that my first video guide is on PI. Weighing in at 38 minutes long, it covers all the basic steps from skills to picking up your finished products at the customs office.

Check it out let me know what you think. If I get a good response I will make more of these longer in depth guides or shorter, again let me know. After putting in the time I have a real appreciation for anyone who makes YouTube videos and a bigger appreciation for people that put together good guides.

You can find the guide here, you can check out my YouTube channel Tactic Talisman here, and if you like what you see leave a comment or subscribe. So without further adieu I give you:

Basic 14 Day Starting Skill Plan

Geared towards those trial accounts that want to be serious but just haven't taken the risk yet you need a simple training plan to get you started. Because in Eve Online your consequences matter and when it comes to skill planning it matters more than most. Ok, so first the skills and then the why:

Navigation 4 - 5% bonus to sub-warp ship velocity per skill level.
CPU Management 4 - 5% bonus to ship CPU output per skill level.(Used for fitting ships.)
Power Grid Management 4 - 5% bonus to ship's powergrid output per skill level. (Used for fitting ships.)
Capacitor Management 4 - 5% bonus to capacitor capacity per skill level. (Used to activate your ships modules.)
Mechanics 4 - 5% bonus to structure hit points per skill level.
Shield Management 4 - 5% bonus to shield capacity per skill level.
Hull Upgrades 4 - 5% bonus to armor hit points per skill level.
Spaceship command 4 - 2% improved ship agility for all ships per skill level.

Total time: 12 days, 20 hours, 16 minutes, 40 seconds; (Time based on no remap) Cost: 400,000 isk.

Now in some older guides your going to see some different names for these skills as of 2014 these skill names are current. Great for a a new player during your first 14 days or perfect for a trial account. These skills are great for getting started you will eventually train them all to level five they are the base foundation for any path in Eve. Why? These are skills that affect every ship from how fast it flies to your ability to put modules on the ship, shields, armor etc.

To fill out the last couple days of your training look towards some more roll oriented skills or career specific skills:

Gunnery 4 - 2% bonus to weapon turrets' rate of fire per skill level. (If you are planning on shooting something your Gunnery skills are a good place to start.)
Mining 4 - 5% bonus to mining turret yield per skill level.
Trade - 3 Active buy/sell order limit increased by 4 per level of skill. (Someday, sometime your going to need to sell something.)

Hope that gets you started. Eve Online has years and years worth of skill training to train so get started and don't forget to feed your skill que. This list is based on skills that will help you in the long run, before you have a chance to see what kind of game play you like or enjoy. Good luck out there you have a lot of decisions ahead of you in your future skill training.

Investment Guide: Level 1 Mission Algos Drone Boat

In Eve Online you need a little isk to get started in which ever direction you choose to head be it PvP or PvE or a hundred different other paths. To get started working over that first 10 million isk hump, players general turn to mining or missions. Today I want to go over the skills and fit for an Algos drone boat level 1 mission set up. Why drones? The answer will be different for everyone but for me I like the play style of drones they boast pretty good range for a new player. They are very forgiving when learning the game and great when you can switch them to aggressive if your feeling over whelmed in a mission. The typical skilled mining player will have already put some skill training into drones so its a natural cross over.

Skills
Gallente Frigate 3
Gallente Destroyer 3
Weapon Upgrades 1
Drones 4(at least to 4 if not 5)
Capacitor Management 2
Afterburner 1
Shield Upgrades 1
Tactical Shield Manipulation 1
Gunnery 1
Small Hybrid Turret 1
Mechanics 3
Repair Systems 2
Remote Armor Repair Systems 1
Scout Drone Operation 1

Optional for Salvage Drone
Survey3
Salvaging 2
Salvage Drone Operation 1

Total time: 3 days, 11 hours, 6 minutes, 2 seconds; (Time based on no remap)Cost: 2,137,500

Keys to drone boats are drones you can only launch as many drones as your drone skill allows so training Drones to level 4 and 5 is advised especially if you plan on using drone boats into higher level missions. Also because more drones in space means more damage on target. These are the bare minimum skills to fit the Algos you will naturally want to train your skills higher looking forward to higher level missions.

Fit

Ship fit source: Algos - UniWiki

This Algos is passive shield fit I used it to run level 1's and then level 2 missions. Keep in mind this fit is for the most part low skilled for pilots without a lot of training. I was fine flying it until I started doing level 2's I got blown up a few times. I would suggest upgrading when you start doing level 2's. The next ship in the series is a Vexor its a great drone boat and works a lot better for level 2's than the Algos.

While this guide isn't meant to be all encompassing as far as mission running goes hopefully this provides you with templates for a skill plan and a ship fit. See below for more mission running resources.

Investment Guide: Quick Hauling

Your options here are pretty simple either you are picking up things and moving them to sell and make a profit or you're picking up someone else's things via courier contract and moving them for a profit. Your wanting to maximizes your profit potential by calculating the size of the cargo by the amount of isk you will earn by the time it will take to move. With this simple formula in mind lets take a look at your hauling options.

History
Before we get too deep it would be best to take a look at the skill changes and ship changes that have taken place the past several years in Eve. Before the skill changes you use to be required to skill up to high levels before you could use the larger industrial haulers that isn't the case any more you can use any industrial of any race as soon as you train the racial skill to level one.

Ship changes have created more variety among the different industrial ships allowing for more specialization. In my next guide I will cover the differences more in depth but for this basic guide we will stick to the smallest cheapest haulers that you are given in your career agent tutorials and the fittings and uses of each.

Skills
Gallente Industrial 3
Evasive Maneuvering 3
Mechanics 3
Jury Rigging 3
Astronautics Rigging 1
Warp Drive Operation 1
Hull Upgrades 2
Shield Upgrades 4
Tactical Shield Manipulation 4

Total time: 8 days, 11 minutes, 28 seconds(time based on no remap); Cost: 789,000

Ship Fit
[Nereus, Hi Sec]

Large Shield Extender II
EM Ward Amplifier II
EM Ward Amplifier II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
Thermic Dissipation Amplifier II

Local Hull Conversion Nanofiber Structure I
Warp Core Stabilizer I
Warp Core Stabilizer I
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II

Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Medium Cargohold Optimization I

Ship fit source: Nereus - UniWiki

The Nereus will give you a fast little hauler with a little more ehp than the old weaker haulers. Keep in mind don't fly what you can't afford to lose. This includes whatever your hauling in your cargo bay. As a rule of thumb if you haul anything over 100 million isk your going to start attracting unwanted attention.

At max skills you're only looking at about 8000m3 of cargo give or take a few modules. Its not that bad considering how slow freighters travel with the warp speed changes. I will cover specific haulers in the next guide as you follow along the Gallente line of haulers you will find lots of options. Whether you're working towards being an industrialist or looking to getting into hauling full time this is a great place to start.

Beginner's Guide

ImageEve Online is a space based sandbox style MMO produced by CCP. Before you blast off to the stars you need to understand a couple of things. Playing Eve at first can be hard and is unlike any MMO you have played before. You play as an immortal space pilot who flies massive spaceships through the cold darkness of space. You train skills in real time and interact in a space scape that is controlled by other players. From the ships you buy to the space stations you live on someone has built them, shipped them, and manages them.

You need to first decide what race you will play as. The good news here is your decision will not impact your choice of ships later on (Note: Free to Play Alpha clones are only able to fly ships of their race. If you subscribe you can play any ship). You can train later on to fly any races ships regardless of your starting race. If your not already in game check out this quick walk through of the character creation process.

Once in game get comfortable navigating the interface. Your first thing you want to do is get your character training up skills. As mentioned previous skills train in real time and you need to keep skills queued up. They will continue to train even when you aren't logged in.  Later on in the game you will be training skills that take days or even weeks to train. Click on your character portrait on your neocom bar. Then click on skills and get to the skill que window. You start out with only a few skills you can train. You can buy more from the market where npc sellers will provide them at a constant price in various station locations around the game.

With your character window still open lets check out your characters attributes. These attributes could better be referred to as skill attributes as they affect how fast your skills train. Each skill has two attributes that affect its training time. The more points in an attribute the faster a skill will train.
Each attribute has an unchangeable base value of 17. When you first start you can remap or move the points around twice after that you can only change them once a year because of this it is strongly cautioned that you wait to remap until you have a good grasp of the game and what skills you want to train towards. You have 14 re-mappable points. You can only add up to 10 additional points to any one attribute.

The best way to map out your skill training and best possible attribute configuration is to use the program EveMon. EveMon is a free third party program that uses a API key from Eve that you can use to plan your skills out and attributes. Some corporations even use this program to verify what and how many skills you have trained.

Now lets check out another feature that will affect your characters attributes called implants. Implants are items that can be bought on the market and increase your attributes. Attribute Implants range from plus 1 to plus 7 attribute points. They require the skill cybernetics to use and cannot be used again or resold after being plugged in. As a new player it shouldn't be to hard for you to get your hands on some plus 2 implants for each attribute.

What is a clone? A clone is you. All your skill training is kept in your clone. You need to upgrade your clone level as you gain skill points. Because if you are killed meaning your pod is destroyed without an upgraded clone you lose those trained skills. The space station your clone is saved at is where your going to start if your pod is destroyed. Keep that in mind when venturing far off into space. Your clone also has all of your implants in it. So if your pod is destroyed  whatever implants you had plunged in are destroyed as well. You update and save your clone at the medical bay in the station menu. Note some stations don't have medical facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Also Check out Eve Online's Official FAQ

What is Eve Online?
Eve Online is a Sci-fi spaced based MMO. Based on one continuous server, everyone plays in the same game server. The game is a sandbox style, you can do what you want. Check out the Eve Online Wikipedia article or the official Eve Wiki About Eve Online article for more information.

When did Eve Online come out?
Eve Online launched in 2003. The game has changed a lot through its many expansions.

How are the graphics? Have they been updated?
Yes, the graphics have been updated several times over the years and still look sweet. Ship models are constantly being updated. Here is a link to the latest System Requirements.

Is Eve Online Fun?
The game is incredibly fun noting that I am biased. Maybe fun isn't the right word more like addicting.

Is Eve Online Hard?
The game mechanics can be complicated. It is hard to just jump in but like all games the only way to learn is to just jump in and play.

How much does the game cost?
Eve Online costs $19.95 that lets you buy the game and gives you your first month of time to play. Sometimes you can get the game through steam for as little as $5 dollars during one of their weekend deals. Also if you have an old account they sometimes have special offers for resubscribing.

What is the monthly subscription fee?
The monthly subscription fee is $14.95 dollars a month.

Are the expansions free?
Yes, to date all the expansions have been free.

Is it worth the subscription fee to play?
For me I started playing the 14 day trial and loved it. I wasn't doing anything exciting or fancy I was just playing with simple ships and mining asteroids I subscribed after a week of playing.

What is a PLEX?
Pilot Licenses Extensions or PLEX is an actual in game item you can redeem for 1 month of Eve Online game time or trade on the in-game market.

Can you buy in-game money with real money?
In a way you can buy whats called a PLEX through your account management for 19.95 for 1. A PLEX is an actual in game item. You can a) redeem this item for 1 month of game time or b) trade it in-game for in-game money(ISK). Current In-game PLEX prices can be found at Eve Central.

Can you make enough in-game money in your first month to buy a PLEX?
With no help, no in-game friends, no corporations, I tried mining I played about an hour a day average. All I did was mine and trade some. I made 240 million ISK. A PLEX at the time(July 2012) ran about 500 million ISK. You will have loads more fun in game if you don't worry about the money and just pay for the subscription but everyone has to learn for themselves. If you work hard after 3 to 6 months in, you could be paying for your game with PLEX.

How many characters can you have on an account?
You can create up to three characters on a single account, only one character at a time can train skills though.

Can you have more than one account?
You can have more than one account. Lots of players use more than one account and I have heard of some big corporate hot shots having as many as 22 accounts.

What is Dust 514?
Eve: Dust 514 is a free to play FPSMMO for Sony's PS3. The game is played out on planets within the Eve Online Universe. Check out the Dust 514 Wikipedia article for more information.

Is Dust 514 free to play?
Yes.

What is Eve: Valkyrie?
Eve: Valkyrie is a quick action fighter plane type shooter themed after the Eve Online Universe. Most notably it will launch using the Oculus Rift.

How to: A PI Guide

Before we start make sure you have the necessary skills to get started with Planetary Interaction.

1. Decide on what you want to make
Before I go any further I take a look at this handy PI commodities chart. I pick a few potential items and then cross check the market in game or over at Eve Central.

2.  Plan the Production
Understand what other commodities you need to buy or build planet side and what raw resources you will need to produce the PI commodity you choose.

Image
Map feature showing my ability to remotely scan planets from a distance.
3. Picking Planets and Scanning for Resources
  • Needs to have the raw resources required for the product you want to produce.
  • Close to your area of operation or your home system.
  • Have a low radius. Lower radius planets use less CPU to connect structures meaning more extractors.
  • Have similar planets close by in system or one jump out so all your PI operations are close for ease of up keep.
Eveeye.com has an excellent database of system's planets and there sizes(radius).

4. Scan to find a spot for your Command Center
Find and choose a good location for your command center. If your extracting more than one resource try and place your command center between the two.

5. Get your equipment planet side
Time to get into space. Get your indy hauler out and buy the specific command center for the planet you want to colonize. If you have already chosen a location on the planet all you need to do is be in system with your hauler with the command center in the cargo hold. In planet mode, place the command center on the surface and hit submit.

6. Build your factories/route your products

7. Start your extractors(or drop off resources for a larger operations)
I run a 3 day cycle for my specific operations and using Google Calendar to keep track of when the cycle needs to be reset. I also have google calendar send me a reminder email.

8. Once a week pick up/ship to market
I pick one day out of the week for pick up and shipping.

Don't be afraid to dump a planet if the production just isn't there. Resources can change over time or maybe your skills just weren't that great when you first scanned down the planet. Also don't be afraid to retool to a different product if its going for higher on the market. Unless you have some sort of emotional attachment to what your building its ok to build something else for more isk.

PI Investment Guides:
Basic Planetary Interaction: covers the basic skills, ships and material costs for a simple 3 planet PI production. Total Investment Cost: 5,631,000 isk.
Intermediate Planetary Interaction: a more advanced version of the basic guide, this will show you what you need to maximize your PI production. Total Investment Cost: 6,431,000 isk.

Investment Guide: Basic Manufacturing

Update June 2015: You can find an updated Tech 1 Manufacturing Guide hereParts of this guide have become outdated and my not reflect actual gameplay.

The Goal:
As a new player you only have one available manufacturing slot. This guide much like the Planetary Interaction Guide will give you a strategy for beginning production in a modest manufacturing career.

The Skills:
Industry 3 (Speeds up your manufacturing.)
Production Efficiency 3 (Lowers your needed minerals by a total of 15%)
Mass Production I (Adds one additional manufacturing slot.)

Total time: 18 hours, 3 minutes, 20 seconds
Cost: 420,000 isk

The Equipment:
Industrial ship to haul your minerals or goods.
Blueprint of the Item you want to build.
Minerals (See cost layout below to find out how much you need.)
Station with open manufacturing slots. Note: Even if slots aren't open you may choose to "Get in Line" if for some reason you can't move your minerals to a new station.

The Cost:
I use my own spreadsheet to calculate the costs but you can find a lot of online calculators I will post  a short list below.

When I started out I wanted a little bit more control than some of these web applications give you.
www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprints/
eve-platoon.de/index.php/me?filter_string=&search=Search

Quick Start

ImageStarting out for the first time Eve Online is overwhelming. This guide gives you a heads up on character creation consequences, character attributes, implants, skill training and clones. What are you waiting for lets get a quick start. First lets watch a quick video it gives a brief overview of what you will be doing in game.

Character Creation
ImageImageImageImage
What are the consequences of Character Creation?
Race affects...
Your starting area in-game. The general region in space you start at, for example, if you choose Amarr You will start in Amarr space etc. Two token skills, racial frigates, and a small weapon skill. You can train to fly any ship in the game of any race regardless of starting race. Each race has one of three ethnic bloodlines you may choose from.

Bloodline affects...
What you generally look like before you start editing your physical character.

Ancestry affects...
What your little bio says in-game.

Education affects...
What starting system you will be directed towards in the in-game tutorial. You can do the tutorial at any starting system of any race in the game or not at all if you choose. Below is a list of starting areas for each of the four races. (Note: You are only asked to report to these training tutorials you don't have to. Although I highly advise you should go through them all.)

Amarr Empire
  • Conoban System - Hedion University
  • Deepari System - Imperial Academy
  • Pasha Sytem - Royal Amarr Institute
Caldari State
  •  Akiainavas System - School of Applied Knowledge
  • Jouvulen System - Science and Trade Institute
  • Uitra System - State War Academy
Gallente Federation
  • Clellinon System - Center For Advanced Studies
  • Couster System - Federal navy Academy
  • Trossere System - University of Caille
Minmatar Republic
  • Embod System - Pator Tech School
  • Hadaugago System - Republic Military School
  • Malukker System - Republic University
Pick a good name that you want to be known by.

(Note: After completing the character creation process you can only change the appearance of your hair, scars and tattoos. You can change the character profile picture at any station for no cost.)

(Note: You can train to fly any ship in the game of any race regardless of starting race. Also Race doesn't affect Character Attributes which are explained below.)

Character Attributes
ImageCharacter Attributes are actually Skill Attributes. They don't directly affect how your ship flies. These attributes affect the time it takes to train your skills. How attributes affect skill training? Each skill has two attributes that affect its skill training time. For example Mining's two attributes are Primary: Intelligence and Secondary: Memory by having a character with more points allocated to theses two attributes the Mining skill will train faster.

Attribute names are:
  • Intelligence
  •  Perception
  • Charisma
  • Willpower
  • Memory.
Each attribute has a base number of 17. When you first start you can remap them twice after that you can only change them once a year. You have 14 re-mappable points. You can only add up to 10 additional points to any one attribute.

The best way to map out your training and best possible attribute configuration is to use the program EveMon. EveMon is a free API that you can use to plan your skills out and attributes. Some corporations even use it to verify how many skills you have trained.

Implants
Implants can be used to increase your attributes even further thus increasing your effect skill training time.
ImageImageImageImageImage
Implants come in +1 to +7 per attribute. As a new player it shouldn't be hard to get your hands on some +2s. You will need Cybernetics skill trained before you can implant them.

Skill Training(These will affect how your ship flies)
ImageSkills train 24 hours a day in real world time. Starting out your going to want to specialize in certain skills. Download EveMon, as I mentioned above, it will help you plan out your skills and the best attribute combinations to train them. Also it will tell you what skills you need to use various items and ships.

To get more skills you buy the skill books, which are NPC seeded at the starting stations. Some skills cost a lot more than a week old pilot can afford. With time you can buy what you want and need.

Clones
Image
What is a clone? A clone is you. All your skill training is kept in your clone. You need to upgrade your clone level as you gain skill points. Because if your pod is destroyed without an upgraded clone you lose those trained skills. The space station your clone is saved at is where your going to start if your pod is destroyed. Keep that in mind when venturing far off into space. Your clone also has all of your implants in it. So if your pod is destroyed  whatever implants you had plunged into it are destroyed as well.

Jump Clones
What is a Jump Clone?  It is a copy of your characters clone. Jump Clones give you the ability to both have multiple sets of implants and also a way to jump to a new location of a saved jump clone. They can only be used once every 24 hours. You have to have at least an 8.0 standing with the station owning corporation in order to instal a jump clone. You also need Infomorph Psychology skill to use. (Note: It will take several months before your playing around with these bad boys but don't worry once your standings are high enough you will be in good shape to use jump clones.)

These are very watered down definitions but should give you a clearer understanding of some of the most important aspects of the game. You have a lot of studying to do beyond this so get out there keep flying and keep reading.

Investment Guide: Intermediate Planetary Interaction

Image Basic Planetary Interaction
Intermediate Planetary Interaction <You are here.
Youtube Basic PI Guide

The Planetary Interaction system in Eve Online is pretty interesting. I originally got interested in playing Eve Online when I stumbled upon a PI video on youtube. PI has gone through several changes over the years and this How To Guide will help you design your own efficient PI system using the most current system.

Before we get to building your PI system lets look at a few different designs and the goals of those designs:

  • PI P3 production or a factory design. This design requires building a system where multiple inputs from various planets comes together to make a P3 product that sells at or above the sum of its parts and customs offices fees. You use a variety of on planet factories and storage facilitates to run this kind of production design. I don't personally use this method. An excellent guide can be found over at Warp to Zero follow his guide Planetary Interaction Challenge to setup a production chain for P3 products.
  • Mass P2 one planet system(x5) A mass P2 design is my favorite it requires no transferring of products from one planet to another you simple hit the button go and come pick up the products.

Skills:
Remote Sensing 3
Science 4
Planetology 3

Command Center Upgrades 3
Interplanetary Consolidation 4

Total time: 6 days, 16 hours, 54 minutes, 1 second; Cost: 2,250,000
Optional:

Command Center Upgrades 4 adds around another 3 days 12 hours training time.

Pick a product:
Before we look for a planet pick a product you want to produce. To do this you need to first know what products there are the Planetary Commodities page over at Uniwiki has an excellent table that shows you what each planet can make and which products you can build on one planet. I usually pick a P2 product that can be produced on one planet such as Biocells. Now check this amazing google spreadsheet (Jita) Planetary Production for Eve Online by Wyke Mossari this is going to give you a snapshot of what Jita PI prices are and what might be worth making.

Cycle Times: I usually run a 3 day cycle time which means you need 432,000 raw materials from both extractors(on 3 day cycle time) to produce the required 40 P1 products an hour to produce your P2 product this is why I usually train up Command Center Upgrades IV to gain more extractors on low resource high sec planets.

Picking a planet:
Choose your planets carefully. Some planets have very large diameters which takes away your powergrid which draws back your ability to deploy more extractors. So look around at planet diameters until your confident the planet you want to build on will be functional. Check the planets in-game info sheet or eveeye.com you can search by system and view all the planet sizes in a simple hud display.
Choose planets close to where you usually play the game so its easy to jump on an industrial and run out and grab your finished products to take to market. With these skills this will give you five planets to build on.

Structures on planet:
I use a simple design where all the products are extracted from the current planet then refined on planet to produce P2 products.

Structures on planet in build order:
Command Center  81,000
Command Center Upgrade 1 580,000
Command Center Upgrade 2 930,000
Command Center Upgrade 3 1,200,000
Extractor (First raw material) 45,000
Extractor (Second raw material) 45,000
Launch Pad 900,000
Basic Industrial Facility (First T1 product) 75,000
Basic Industrial Facility (Second T1 product) 75,000
Advanced Industrial Facility (Final T2 product) 250,000
Total: 4,181,000 isk

Total Cost: 6,431,000 isk before taxes and industrial ship costs if any.
Skills: 2,250,000
Structures: 4,181,000
Total Cost: 6,431,000 isk
Plus Tax on all items transferred off planet. Don't forget to factor this in when choosing what items you want to produce. With the Rubicon expansion this will change as you can train a skill that will lower the NPC Custom Fee's to 5%(at level 5) plus player tax all Custom's Office in the game are now run by Player Owned Corporations.

What is Eve Online? Frequently Asked Questions

ImageAre you thinking about playing Eve Online? Or new to the game?. You might have a few questions about the game, I know I had a lot of questions. It can be hard to find answers to some of your questions. Below is a list of Eve Online related questions and answers from my perspective as a new player.

Image

Yes.
