National Creativity Day

Creativity comes with imagination, and I usually go for an abstract, experimental approach to my work. For my printmaking I’ve done some linoblock printing that’s focused on shapes that combine in compositions that I hope work together in terms of colour, line and arrangement. Here’s a few I’ve created recently and since it’s National Creativity Day today, I thought I’d share them.

Sequence Print

Added the negative effect to this so lines and shapes seem clearer.

Image

This one is quite vibrant and it’s another effect I added from image editing software. Almost gives it an interesting glasswork effect.

Image

Rabbit Moon. I like how the rabbit form fits well in the moon shape and it goes well with the dark blue background.

Hope you have found something creative to do today and where I am it’s really sunny so maybe it’s good weather where you are and you’re out drawing, painting or sketching the coast or a landscape.

Bee More

I revisited some digital art I did a while ago and thought I’d add a background to this as my bumblebee illustration was on a white background. I’ve added a pastel rainbow background and think it complements the bees. It’s a composition that has the elements of the natural world, joy and abstract art.

Creative Processes for Motivation

This week is mental health awareness week and I’ve decided to share some printmaking activity as taking part in something you enjoy maintains your positivity levels and takes your mind off stress and anxiety. This is particularly vital now because of the current situation and lockdown across the world. Staying at home more means more time to take up new hobbies and interests or finish off projects, especially creative ones.  I enjoy creating prints as the process of carving motifs into linoblock, inking them up and printing them are a visual achievement as it’s a different form of illustration and picture making. It makes me motivated to produce more print designs and keeps me focused on more creative ideas.

My deer and sunbeam prints are uniquely different each time I print them which makes it more interesting to print as each print is individual. I also like the contrast of the animal form and abstract geometric lines of the sun rays, to produce this uplifting print.

This is called Forest Walk and has more elements. It also looks bold and striking as it’s printed in black. Hope you are all finding time to participate in any creative activity as long as you are enjoying it and it keep your wellbeing and mind off negativity !

Display Case of Book Publisher’s Logos

If you’ve browsed my previous posts, you will know I appreciate graphic design so it’s quite natural that I would be looking out for more interesting logo designs. I’ve noticed some that are quite eye catching from book publishing companies from some of the books at home. Looking at them makes me think how they came up with the ideas of what shape, object or graphic would go well with the text.

Image

For this one, it could possibly be someone reading a book as the angled square could be the head the the black shape is the open book ( ? )

This one’s probably about the black shapes representing the first letters of Michael O’Mara

I like how the simple shapes of the bird looks like the first letter of P of Phoenix

There’s some humour in this one, as the kangaroo is reading and keeps books in her/his pouch.

I really like the logos for Head of Zeus and Two Dollar Radio. Hope you enjoyed the quick browse of these graphics.

Spotlight on Printmaking 1

I’ve been printmaking for some time and am interested in knowing what others think of my work so I’ve decided to do a blog post on different prints I’ve produced. Linoblock printing is what I specialise in this trees print is one I’ve enjoyed creating. It involved 3 lino block pieces and for this composition, I was aiming for quite an abstract/picture book illustration approach.

Image

It’s printed on approx. 19.1cm x 23.8cm recycled smooth surface paper and have mounted it in 8″ x 10″ card frames.

Each one is individual as they are printed with slight differences in application. Would be good to hear of any feedback on this print 🙂 that would be welcome!

World Graphics Day

Image

Today is 27th April and it’s World Graphics Day! I have created some graphics with text which is from a card cutting craft cover for a notebook I made but I have decided to experiment by adding some effects to it. Just recently I was looking through my jpegs and thought maybe it would be interesting to add some text, some motivational words perhaps, as there’s some spaces around the image.

The image is supposed to be sunbeams and I think it goes well with the words ‘Strive and Thrive’ as the visuals are colourful, energising and positive.

This might look good for a book cover or poster. Hope you are all appreciating all sorts of creative activity out there 🌟

Handmade Notebooks

Image

A creative project of mine has been producing notebooks from using patterns and colours from newspapers and other materials. I’ve also decided to use smaller papercut collages I’ve made as covers. The A5 one on the left is one example. The A6 ones are great compact sizes.

I plan to produce more using interesting looking, colourful papers for the front and back covers. The pages will be made using unwanted paper I’ve accumulated as I have all these A4 photocopies or paper I no longer need. Fab way to turn things into something so much nicer and useful 💡⭐

Typefaces for Max Impact

Design and arrangement play an important part of promoting any product. There are some packaging designs that combine different styles of font and text on the labels to reflect the quality of the products. Here are a few examples I’ve found that are bold and visually striking in terms of colour, text style, placement of graphics and information.

Image

Different font styles of brush script text and bold capital letters combine with the minimal arrangement of blue and white with the product image.

Image

Nivo Soap packaging design has bold black text on white for a contemporary style while the traditional illustrations are inside.

ImageThe style of the Veloforte energy bars labels have two contrasting font styles on paper with a colourful strip over foil. These elements make the product striking and memorable.

Image

I like the minimal style of large and small font styles arranged across the whole of the front. Also the debossed 72% Cacao words add impact as it’s red to match the product descriptions. The placement of that text in the centre also grabs attention.

Straight to the Curve for Biomorph Design Trends

Undulating and free flowing forms and lines in architecture and product design have been drawing attention for many years. Visually appealing for their biomorphic and organic forms, a form that has sinuous curves is definitely eye catching. From the structure of a building that has beams resembling the linear quality of liquid or oil or the fluctuating and billowing shapes in furniture that are similar to clouds, steam or the fluid arc of a shell, there’s a sculptural element that appeals to our connection to the natural world. Here are 15 designs that are elaborate and expressive and all look like they are moving and flowing.

Chair and Seating in 3D CAD

ImageCreating a form using a profile curve and the blend surface tool to model seating was an idea that came naturally to me as I’m interested in furniture design. The form would have an organic look with rounded corners and Rhinoceros CAD allows me to achieve this.

Image

I started with a profile curve for the seat, used blend surface then mirrored the form.

Image

The additional curves are for the legs and back.

Image

Image

Image

I’ve created another chair design with a warmer colour for the seat and back rest and now the legs are made from stainless steel.

For this seating design I’ve scaled the form and decided to copy the seat 6 times and combined them to see what a 6 seater would look like. I’ve assigned solid colours and a patterned fabric for the seat.
