Jonathan Bäckström Quartet is an acoustic improvising quartet with members from Finland and Sweden. Bassist/composer Jonathan Bäckström leads the quartet and they are set on a mission to navigate and discover the music that is created in the moment.
Eyal Hareuveni from Salt-peanuts.eu describes the music as follows: “The quartet relies on urgent, spontaneous vibes that introduce experienced and opinionated improvisers who keep pushing their limits, but always keep cohesive structures, whether it erupts with boundless energy, discover subtle lyrical and openly emotional veins or expand its timbral horizons”.
The group’s debut album was released in 2024 by the Finnish label We Jazz Records and Maurice Hogue of Allaboutjazz.com called it an “exceptional first release.” The group consists of Bäckström on bass and composition, saxophonists Adele Sauros and Marcus Wärnheim and drummer Benjamin Nylund, all active members of the vibrant European music scene.
