About the Artist

Luann Lochhead Schwall, who paints as Lulu Schwall, is a mixed-media artist based in Bon Air, Virginia. Her portraits and sculptures place women at the waterline, in that held-breath moment where gaze is returned. Her current series, Cut, Rebuilt, Chosen, traces a body rebuilt through more than thirty craniofacial surgeries for a rare Tessier facial cleft. Trained first as a counselor and makeup artist, she brings a clinician's attention to skin, scar, and surface, painting with monocular depth after a lifetime of eyelid reconstruction. Her work is held in private collections internationally, and she paints sovereignty, not survival.
