About SecondBite
SecondBite is a national food relief charity, ensuring good food doesn’t go to waste while people go hungry. For more than 20 years, we have rescued surplus food from growers, manufacturers and retailers, distributing it freely to charities and community groups across Australia — turning what’s wasted into what’s needed.
Because everyone deserves access to good food.
Delivering more food relief, together
Since 2024, SecondBite and FareShare have come together as one organisation to deliver more food relief across Australia. Through our nationwide food rescue network, we provide fresh produce and pantry staples to charities and community groups — and where ingredients need to be transformed into nutritious, ready-to-eat meals, our FareShare provide that capability. This end-to-end approach means people get the food they need, in the way they need it. Together, we feed more than 700,000 Australians every week.
SecondBite was founded by Ian and Simone Carson AM in 2005 when they noticed the amount of good quality food being thrown out at their local market in Prahran, Melbourne, and decided to do something about it. They gathered friends and family and collected produce in their cars to deliver to a local food charity.
Initially they were collecting around 600kg of food, equivalent to approximately 1200 meals, from the market and two restaurants. Today, SecondBite has provided the equivalent of over 350 million meals to our charity partners across the country.
Ian and Simone firmly believe all Australians should have access to healthy food no matter where they live or what their circumstances, and are proud to be part of the conversation and solution for how many people regularly face food insecurity.
