2018 week 36: Fantoche

Image

This year I finally made it to a couple of screenings during Fantoche! Both were a collections of shorts, one was a session of the international competition and the other a session of the Swiss competition. There were some gems in there, e.g. Enough by Anna Mantzaris.

2018 week 23: Slated to be torn down

Image

Many older buildings in a state of disrepair around this region are torn down and new buildings are put up in their place. Renovation is just too expensive in many cases. This building is/was in Baden.

68. Steeple

Image

Another one from Baden. The steeple in the background belongs to the same church seen in my post 7. Light in Baden

I love the wee asymmetric window on the lowest row, between the two with the shutters.

67. Haus zue dem Schwambet 1658

On Kronengasse in Baden.
Schwambet or Schmambet, I can't quite make out what the name really is.

Thanks to a reader who might be a member of the Heim family, I now know that it is Schwambet.

59. It's that time again

It's Fasnacht time again and the flag of the Spanischbrödlizunft is ruling over Baden from Schloss Stein.

8. Light in Baden 2

Image

Another dramatically lit scene. This is the castle ruin in Baden that I've shown on this blog before. On the left is the Falken building. Note the cars on the street in the lower right corner, passing through a tiny tunnel under the mound.

7. Light in Baden

Image

Cloudy days can make for some interesting lighting.

We're on Mellingerstrasse here, looking towards the intersection with Brugger/Neuenhoferstrasse. That's the spire of the catholic church lit up by the sun. Up on the hill, just to the right of the spire, is Schartenfels restaurant.

There a big construction project planned for this intersection, and some of the work has started already.

We missed Fantoche

Image

Truth be told, I spend a lot of my free time outside Villigen. On the weekends I'm often in Baden (pop. 134'916) where there's a produce market every Saturday except for during the winter.

Fantoche (website in English) is an international festival featuring animation films, and it has been held in Baden since 1995. Sadly I have not yet managed to attend one. Maybe next year...

Thirty seven hundred each

Image

Each of these concrete counterweights weighs 3700 kilograms. Which is 8157 pounds for you non-metric folks.

This crane is set up over a walkway in the near by city of Baden, and I couldn't help feeling a little bit uneasy walking under it. If walking under ladders was considered bad luck back in the day, just imagine what this sort of potential calamity would merit.

Hofmann retrospective in Baden

Image
Albert Hofmann, the man who was the first to synthesize LSD, was a Baden boy. The Historical Museum of Baden has an exhibition going on now about his life and work. And yes, the walls and floor are painted a color close to acid green.

Reflections

Image
Sorry about the absence -- I've been away from Switzerland and have had some connection problems. Here is another photo from the area in Baden I've been showing for the past few days.

Rocks, the other view

Same area as in yesterday's photo. As you can see, there's a dam which is used for electricity production. Recently some fish were introduced to the area hence the poster,

Paper pick-up day in Baden

Image
I've talked about paper pick-up in Villigen before (for recycling, see links below). We had our quarterly collection on the 16th. Last Saturday, I photographed a couple of the paper collectors in the nearby town of Baden.

By the way, I was asked to contribute (is there a nice sounding term similar to pro bono if the public good isn't necessarily involved?) to the Swiss edition of an online information service site for expats and I've decided to give it a go. My first piece is here: Altpapiersammlung: paper collection for recycling.

Georgia on my mind

Image
I saw this car with US license plates from Georgia in Baden a few days ago. Proof of Baden is the BrownBoveri-strasse sign to the left of the traffic light. Brown Boveri were the founders of the engineering firm BBC that merged with ASEA around 1988 and is now known as ABB. Headquartered in Baden.

Fasnacht flag on Schloss Stein

Image
Schloss Stein, a Habsburg building in Baden. For Fasnacht (Lent), the usual Swiss flag has been replaced with that of the Spanischbrödlizunft. More info at this old post: 20070218 Fasnacht takes over Baden (V).

I try to limit my usage of Photoshop trickery but I just gave in for this photo. It was even more dull than the one from last year (20080201 And so it starts), so I just selectively turned it to greyscale.
