Project Hail Mary (2026) Review

Project Hail Mary (2026)

Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller

Screenplay by Drew Goddard

Based on Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, Priya Kansara

Plot Synopsis: (via Wikipedia)
The film follows the story of Ryland Grace, a man who awakens on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he came to be there.

My Opinion:

This was perfection. This is the type of film that keeps my love of movies alive. The type of movie I took for granted while growing up in the ‘80s, when we’d get something like this multiple times a year. I now have to try to not sound all cheesy & dorky as I get a little overexcited when I love a film. But, man, why can’t they all be like this? Movies that just make your heart happy? You know?!

Image

Okay, I’ll try to calm down now & be rational. I’ll start by saying that I know this movie is very “me”. I always love sci-fi (heavy, lightweight, doesn’t matter – I love it all). And I love a good story, which this definitely has. But probably more than anything, characters are extremely important to me. I think Andy Weir does an amazing job writing insanely likeable characters who have a fantastic sense of humor (same goes for The Martian). Plus, even more so, I love nothing more than a great non-human character. I’m an absolute sucker for that. If you ask me my favorite movie characters, I’ll probably start with R2-D2, Yoda, Grogu (movie soon!), Totoro, WALL-E, etc. Nothing makes me happier than some lovable creature or robot so, yeah, I already adored Rocky from the book. It was already likely that I was going to like this movie no matter what.

Image

I thought it looked extremely promising from the trailers but, wow, it even surpassed my high expectations. I’d even go so far as to say that, in my opinion based on the many times I’ve read a book & then watched the movie, this is the most perfect adaption of a novel that I’ve ever seen. Perfect & faithful. I’d say the only thing missing was more explanation of the science involved but that’s totally understandable due to time restraints. It didn’t hurt the film at all. I think I probably bore my daughter to tears after every film like this when I fill her in on all the ways the movie differed from the book. I happily didn’t have to have that conversation at all this time.

Image

After reading the book, I couldn’t wait to see a movie version but thought it would be very hard to adapt. I mainly just didn’t see how they could get the design of Rocky quite right. I’m in awe of how amazing Rocky looks as well as the design of his ship, etc. And his little ball he rolls around in! I want a little “rock with legs” to be my best friend now. Rocky is precious. Another non-human character now added high onto my list of favorites.

Image

I hate to keep using the word “perfect” in this review but it’s really difficult when Lord, Miller & Goddard (and, well, everyone behind the scenes) did everything so right. Ryan Gosling was the most perfect choice to star in this & there is absolutely no one else I can even imagine in this role (so, I guess I have to thank the casting director too). Gosling is who I wanted. He can do any type of role & he can easily carry a big blockbuster like this, which is obviously important when you’re the only human for such a big chunk of the film. We all know he can do humor, which he did brilliantly here as expected. But he can do the heavy & emotional stuff too and, wow, he was so great doing quite a wide range of emotions here. I hate that movies like this don’t get recognised by award shows. So, for next year’s Oscars when I’m assuming this (at most) might be nominated for some behind-the-scenes awards, Gosling has already won Best Actor in my heart. Rocky, too! An Oscar for Rocky too! They totally deserve it. Statement.

Image

Oh, I better add that Sandra Hüller was great too! Sorry, I’m so focused on the Grace/Rocky thing. Loved her as well. And the film was gorgeous. Again, I can’t fault this adaptation in any way whatsoever. I’ve given it an instant 5 stars on Letterboxd & put it directly into my list of all-time favorites. And #1 of the 2020s. So I feel that I should point out that I’m not someone who gives 5 stars very often, especially these days. I was curious so I looked up what I’ve given 5 stars since the year 2000. Only five others, and the last one was a decade ago (2001 Spirited Away & Monsters Inc, 2008 WALL-E, 2015 Inside Out, 2016 Arrival, 2026 Project Hail Mary).

So, yeah, I liked this. So much. My heart is happy. Amaze amaze amaze.

My Rating: 10/10

The 98th Academy Awards – Reviews Of Nominated Films & List Of All Nominees

Image

It’s almost Oscars-time, baby! What a magical evening! 😆😉

I’ve seen 32 of the 50 nominees. Lucked out in finding a lot of the shorts & documentaries to stream this year. Mostly annoyed that I didn’t get to the one & only showing near me of If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Also really want to see Little Amélie or the Character of Rain & Arco. Do plan to rent Blue Moon this weekend before the Oscars. Have always liked Ethan Hawke & Richard Linklater so want to get to that one before the show.

Zero interest in Bugonia. Hate Lanthimos.

So here are my rankings of all the nominees I’ve seen. After that is a list of all the categories & nominees. I’ve linked to my reviews of each.

Shorts Watched:

(All are Oscar nominees. My full list of all this year’s Oscar-nominated things I’ve seen can be found here.)

Forevergreen – Starring Groot as The Giving Tree. Which is fine as I like both of those things. Thought this was cute & I liked the animation. Feels much more “mainstream” than the other animated short nominees (like it could be a Pixar short, you know?). So doesn’t feel as worthy as something like the excellent Butterfly but I probably enjoyed this the most of this year’s animated short nominees.

The Three Sisters – This was fun. Don’t think it has a chance of winning the animated short Oscar compared to the other nominees but it’s a very enjoyable short film. It’s cute & made me smile. Which is nice for a change, as the Oscars tend to focus mainly on the most depressing stuff imaginable.

The Singers – Liked this. Wanted to love it as I’m a very big music fan & know how moving & potentially even life saving music can be for some people. That one dude was maybe a little annoying but it was great when they finally started singing. Liked the old guy’s voice the most (and he also sang the best song with The House of the Rising Sun). Oh, this short looked pretty great! I know nothing of filmmaking but they did something good there…

Perfectly A Strangeness – I actually quite liked this, although it’s certainly not for everyone. It’s like EO crossed with Koyaanisqatsi. Bizarre but quite beautiful. Kind of mesmerising & a little eerie. I liked the score, too. Maybe I’m just weird.

Children No More: Were And Are Gone – Very hard to know what to say about this. I don’t tend to “review” (or even watch) heavy documentaries. But then Oscar-time rolls around & I watch as many nominees as I can. This is obviously a heartbreaking topic & I will never ever be able to handle horrible things happening to children. So to instead focus on this as a film, I’ll say it’s very short & not very in-depth. They just follow these protesters for a while & we never really learn anything about them, their feelings, or any of poor children in the photos that they are holding. So I don’t think this will win the Oscar despite the heavy topic behind it.

The Girl Who Cried Pearls – Liked the start of this as I was liking the story and this poor boy & lonely, abused girl. But then I didn’t like the ending “twist”. Just kind of fell apart at the end. Good animation, though (although creepy). It was good, but I don’t think it’s Oscar-winning material.

Jane Austen’s Period Drama – Silly but cute. I liked the idea of it but it doesn’t really say “Oscar-worthy” to me. The names of the characters were fun, though. Made me think of this list I did years ago: My Top Ten Period Dramas

Also watched these previous Oscar-nominated shorts:

Our Uniform – Really liked this. Really liked the animation, too. Thought it was very cleverly done with the fabric. It made me feel very sad, though. “Just a female…” 😦 Important & moving message.

A Lien – Very good. Caused me anxiety, as dealing with passports, forms, etc has always stressed me out a lot despite me not actually having to worry about anything. Can’t imagine the terror that some people must feel when they are just trying to comply. Hate seeing families ripped apart.

Some very strong Oscar shorts from previous years that I wasn’t able to find anywhere to watch until now. Hooray for Kanopy! Get yourselves a library card, everyone! It’s quite an interesting streaming service. It’s crazy some of the stuff they have on there (like Alejandro Jodorowsky & Dario Argento films…).

TV SHOWS WATCHED

Shrinking: S3 E2-5 – Still really enjoying this show. I could watch this group of friends forever. Although it sometimes makes me a little depressed, having never had even ONE good friend besides my husband (let alone a whole group of wacky, funny, fucked-up friends).

High Potential: S2 E8-12 – Still a fun show. Lightweight but enjoyable. Which is what I need lately.

Grey’s Anatomy: S22 E7-11 – I cannot for the life of me figure out the schedule of this fucking show. It seems to start up, we get a few episodes, then it disappears for a month or so, and then it’s back. Fuck that! Pissing me off. And this show is NOT worth the stress. Annoying goddamn characters. Especially Teddy. Please kill Teddy! But 21 fucking YEARS, man. I can’t give up now. That’s longer than most every relationship I’ve ever had.

BOOKS READ

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros – Okay, I tried reading a worthy classic but I gave up & started this after seeing its high rating on Amazon based on a shitload of reviews. Life is hard & I’m exhausted, okay? I do watch worthy films so I admit I like my books to be lightweight & entertaining.

Yeah, this was an enjoyable read. I thought it was YA until I got to the graphic sex and realised that it must not be. It’s been compared to The Hunger Games (Fair enough, I’m a fan) & Fifty Shades (Oh fuck OFF with that! How insulting?! To be honest, though, I’ve not read that as I’m not one of those weird horny types). It’s more like… Game Of Thrones but with consensual sex? Well, no… Not quite as heavy. More like How To Train Your Dragon crossed with The Hunger Games?

Gotta say I loved everything to do with the dragons in this. I was enjoying the book but really got much more into it once the dragons showed up (which took a while). Then I was really feeling it. I stayed up late one night when it got to the “Threshing” in which the dragons choose their riders. Had to know what would happen with the main character (Violet) & if she’d get a dragon! I do really like the characters of Violet & main rival/love interest Xaden (both of whom are of cause hot as fuck, apparently).

Honestly, though, the sex was… um… described very thoroughly? But it’s only a couple of scenes & the book is much more about all the training for war & the dragon-riding that these cadets go through. So don’t go thinking it is a Fifty Shades thing. Ugh. Give me the dragons over the sex! Although the sex in this was fun. Not gonna lie. I think they’re planning on making this into a TV series, which I’ll watch. And I’ll definitely read the rest of the books at some point. – 4/5

Documentaries & Shorts Watched In January: (all are Oscar nominees – reviews below)

Ranking of all 2026 Oscar Nominees that I’ve seen here

Documentaries:

Come See Me In The Good Light – I hate Oscar-time, as I make myself watch depressing documentaries (it’s rare I watch docs unless very interested in a subject). Liked this the most of the 4 I’ve seen. Wasn’t sure I could handle another cancer doc (had enough of that in real life), but this was put together so well & the couple were just so interesting & likeable. A doc where you feel like you know them by the end. And I loved that Goosebumps poem.

Mr. Nobody Against Putin – This was quite fascinating. I can’t believe he managed to get this out into the world. Extremely risky & very scary. I’m not one for documentaries normally but I was completely engrossed the whole time with this one.

The Perfect Neighbor – My heart breaks for that poor woman’s family and especially her kids. It makes me so uncomfortable watching these kind of things, though. I don’t want to see people being told news that is going to shatter their lives. Awful. I also feel sorry for anyone who has a neighbor from hell like this. It really does ruin your life, even just the small confrontations each day.

The Alabama Solution – Intense & important documentary. It’s scary knowing that so many terrible things are being covered up by those in charge. All the time. Everywhere. Which is why I’m not much of a watcher of documentaries & stick more to fictional films, as I want an escape from reality. But it’s that time of year when I try to watch all the Oscar nominees & then have to attempt to review documentaries…

Short Films:

Two People Exchanging Saliva – Well, this was weird as hell but I liked it. Doesn’t actually seem too farfetched at all & I like that it told the story in an unusual way. So many people have had, currently have, and/or will in the future have crazy restrictions placed on them. A scary but also quite lovely short film.

Butterfly – This was so beautiful & then absolutely heartbreaking. I’d not read anything about it beforehand & didn’t know it would be based on a real person. Really liked the animation style – Love when it feels like you’re watching a “moving painting”. Great short. This feels like it would be a tough one to beat.

All The Empty Rooms – Was dreading watching this, as I can’t stand the completely unnecessary loss of life in American schools. It shouldn’t happen. And it doesn’t happen, to that extreme, anywhere else. It was an interesting way to explore these lives cut tragically short, by looking at their bedrooms. Kids often spend so much of their time there & a bedroom can tell you so much about their personalities via their belongings, posters on the walls, etc. An of course extremely sad short, but it’s kept very matter of fact & didn’t dig too deep (which is for the best – didn’t want it to feel exploitative of these poor families). I’m just still not quite over having my heart ripped out by the animated short If Anything Happens I Love You.

Retirement Plan – This was sweet. Not exactly something we’ve never seen before, but the message of living life to your fullest is always appreciated (even though I, and I’m sure many others, often forget to do that).

A Friend Of Dorothy – This was okay. Liked the relationship between the woman & the boy just fine. The problem was the grandson. I know there will be assholes like that in the world (I’ve been lucky enough to avoid them), but he was just a bit too ridiculous. It was jarring. A very British short.

BOOKS, TV, MUSIC, MISCELLANEOUS IN JANUARY

Image

TV SHOWS WATCHED

Shrinking: S3 E1 – Really glad this show is back on. Love every single character (especially Harrison Ford’s).

Image

Severance: S1 & S2 – Finally re-started this again (think I’d watched an episode or two years ago) after Plur1bus ended & I wanted another weird but intelligent sci-fi show to watch. Binged it & thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the creepy kind of liminal space (or backrooms, whatever you wanna call it) thing going on as well. I always love a weird story, too, but just hope this ends up going somewhere (same with Plur1bus, which I think I slightly prefer). Happy to have such original TV shows to watch in this day & age of far too many movies being sequels, reboots, etc.

Image

His & Hers: This kind of pulpy thriller is a big guilty pleasure of mine. Watched a lot of this kind of thing on streaming services the last few years & I’d say I enjoyed this one more than most of them. Even though, as is usually the case as I read & watch too much of this genre, I did suspect the correct person very early on. But that’s okay as I loved that for its ending – it’s the result I wanted. An easy & enjoyable binge.

Image

The Beast In Me: Wasn’t feeling this thriller quite so much. Not sure why. Was just not that interested in the story or characters. And that dude was an annoying twat from the start. Meh.

Run Away: S1 E1-? – Not sure how far I got with this latest Harlan Coben show. Watch a lot of the adaptations of his twisty turny thrillers, but this one clearly wasn’t grabbing me. May try to finish it at some point.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: S1 E1 – I also wasn’t really feeling this so not watched any more. But it has a high IMDb rating so maybe I’ll try again soon.

BOOKS READ

Started The Picture Of Dorian Gray as I’m trying to read worthy stuff more often. But I abandoned it to start reading Fourth Wing instead, which is a horny YA sort of book. With dragons. Finished it in February, so will write about it in that roundup.

BLOG PLANS FOR THE COMING MONTH

Well, we’re about to start Oscars week. This week is my Super Bowl week! Though I don’t know why I care, as I hate the majority of Oscar nominees in recent years. I’ll probably do a post amalgamating all my reviews of the nominated documentaries & shorts for this year (I watched several in February as well). And on Friday I’ll do my usual Oscars post, ranking all the nominees I’ve seen (I’ve seen a lot this year).

Upcoming Movies I Want To See:

Project Hail Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤️

Tokyo Story, Kes, The Misfits & Ugetsu Reviews

Image

Image

Tokyo Story – This was a lovely film. Nothing flashy or dramatic, just some days in the lives of a very typical sort of family. But, man, could their kids not take ONE day off to spend time with them?! The parents were so sweet as well, as was the daughter-in-law. A film where the characters just felt very real & relatable. Liked this a lot & will definitely seek out more films from director Yasujirō Ozu. – 8.5/10

Image

Image

Kes – Despite living in the U.K. for 25 years, I’ve never loved dreary British movies (only love the glorious depressing music, which is the best ever – I’d like to thank the godawful British weather for probably helping to give us that). So I’d avoided Kes but, even though it’s the usual British dreariness, I liked it quite a bit. I don’t know why. It works sometimes! Worked for Watership Down too, which I love.

I liked the boy in this, who was honestly kind of a sweetheart & a million times nicer than kids nowadays. And also not named Kes like I originally thought – how f*%king dumb am I?! All the adults were wankers (well, except that one who showed an interest in his bird). I should be annoyed that the kid was treated like shit & everyone was poor & unhappy as usual in these films & I seriously wanted his brother to DIE & the goddamn ending (though expected) pissed me the hell off. But something about this film still managed to be uplifting? Somehow. In all that dreariness. Birds freak me out, too, but now I think I want a hawk. That thing was cute. I keep saying hawk but I guess it’s a kestrel which is apparently not the same thing? (As in “Kes”, yes I finally figured that out at the start of the movie – what an idiot). I guess I learned nothing from Ladyhawke.

I’m rambling now. Guess I’m just trying to figure out why I liked this film? I did, though. It’s really good. Not gonna lie, though – I chose this after watching several foreign language films so decided I felt like watching a movie that was in English. Who knew I’d have to turn on the subtitles 10 minutes into this?! First time in 25 years that I’ve struggled with British accents, and I talk to co-workers from the entire U.K. five days a week.

I’m contemplating putting a Letterboxd “heart” on this one, which for me means it makes it into my list of favorite movies (here). We’ll see. I’m thinking about it! But I try to keep that list at 300, and I see it’s at 302 right now. Time to reassess some films I think… – 8/10

Image

Image

The Misfits – Enjoyed this, thanks entirely to Marilyn Monroe’s star power. Loved her in this. Montgomery Clift was good too (and the only decent male character). I’m not going to complain about the other two as this movie is of its time but, man, she needed to get away from Gable & Wallach. Still enjoyed this odd set of “misfits” together, though. An unusual film. I miss the old days of true Hollywood stars. – 8/10

My ranking of all the Westerns I’ve seen here

Image

Image

Ugetsu – Watched this as it’s in the Letterboxd Top 250 plus I love a good Japanese film, so it was right up my alley. This was pretty great. Atmospheric, interesting story, strong women & absolutely useless husbands. Dudes pissed me off! Don’t think it’ll be an absolute favorite & not quite up there with the likes of Letterboxd #1 Harakiri or Kurosawa, but certainly another of many great Japanese classics. – 8/10

Image

Sentimental Value, Bob Trevino Likes It, The Celebration, Once & Jurassic World Rebirth Reviews

Image

Four really good movies today. It’s a shame I had to stick a bad one in here too…

Image

Sentimental Value – Was worried, as I kind of hated Trier‘s The Worst Person In The World & I’m negative about the majority of Oscar nominees in recent years. But I really liked this plus the performances were fantastic so I hope it wins awards. It’s close between this & Hamnet as my favorite (I currently have this ranked 1st with all 2026 nominees I’ve seen here – the rest don’t come close to those). Admit I’m also a sucker for any film that touches on filmmaking as well. Gotta love that “movie magic”. And that house was beautiful. I loved that it was just as much a character in this film as the actors were. Plus, hey, I guess The Shining music existed before The Shining! Good stuff & top performances from everyone involved. So happy to actually like an Oscar nominee these days. – 8/10

Image

Image

Bob Trevino Likes It – Wasn’t expecting this to be so good. Ferreira is an absolute sweetheart. Stewart (her dad) is an enormous piece is shit. Leguizamo broke my heart. And the movie itself almost broke me. It’s a really lovely film. If in the U.K., check it out while it’s still on Film 4! (You have two weeks. I just checked. This is your final warning) (Well, I first posted this ages ago on Letterboxd, so you’ve probably missed it now. Sorry!)8/10

Image

Image

The Celebration – Decided to watch this when I saw it’s a Letterboxd Top 250 film currently on services (then Letterboxd made that a Top 500, which I’ll never complete!). This film was crazy. I was on the edge of my seat when the son gave that first speech. And they all just went on with the party like normal?! Rich people are weird. Hard to know what to rate this. Difficult & disturbing topic but, damn, that was intense. Like a much more disturbing Gosford Park. The film certainly held my attention the whole time & I had no clue what the ultimate outcome would be. Probably deserves an extra star but it’s also very depressing and not a film I’d revisit. Worth a one-time watch for sure, though. – 7.5/10

Once – This was very nice. Always meant to go back & watch it after thoroughly enjoying Sing Street. The “singer/songwriter” music isn’t really my thing but this admittedly has very strong songs & Falling Slowly deserved its Oscar win. I especially liked her voice, which we didn’t get to hear as much. Liked how real the characters & their lives felt. Lovely film. – 7.5/10

Image

Image

Jurassic World Rebirth – This has no soul. Dull characters, rubbish looking dinosaurs, and a “greedy corporate Burke-from-Aliens type of prick” plot that I didn’t care about. Watched it as it’s up for the visual effects Oscar for its CGI bullshit. 1993’s Jurassic Park isn’t a big favorite (I do like it & think it’s very good). But every piece of shit they’ve made since that one has made me appreciate that one SO much more.

Am I in a bad mood or something? That came out way more negative than I was planning on writing. I’ve seen much worse films?! lol – 5.5/10

Moonstruck, The Stepfather, Universal Soldier & The Night Before Reviews

Image

Image

Moonstruck – Crazy I never saw this. It’s much more quirky than I expected but then not quirky enough. Should’ve gone full-quirk! I’m a huge fan of Mask & will forever say that Cher (& Stoltz & Elliott) deserved Oscars for that so at least Cher got one for this. Always preferred her acting to her singing. Cage is being SO “weirdo Cage” in this. The film had good moments but overall didn’t quite live up to its hype for me. – 7/10

Image

The Stepfather – Shocking I never saw this either as I’ve seen most ‘80s horrors. This was better than I was expecting. It’s more of a thriller than the “slasher” I thought it was. O’Quinn was good & creepy. Felt more like the good TV movie thrillers from that era (I mean that in a nice, nostalgic way). Loved seeing Stephen Shellen, too, who was in my teen guilty pleasure Gimme An F (and who commented on my review!!!) 😃 – 7/10

Image

Universal Soldier – I love JCVD. This is a recent discovery, as I ignored his films when released (yes, I’m old enough to have had the chance to see them at the time). But I was somehow unaware of his wonderful assets. Thought this was meant to be one of the better ones? I’m disappointed, as sci-fi is my thing, but this was no Timecop. He’s HOT in this, though. And no mullet! YES! So, worth a watch even though it’s kind of shit. – 6/10

My JCVD Movie Ranking

Image
There is a scene in this where JCVD is unnecessarily fully nude from behind. I couldn’t find an image of that to use in this post. I may or may not have spent far too long searching for that…

Image

The Night Before – I 100% watched this for Keanu. Been in love with him for over 30 years now but missed this one. I’ll always have a soft spot for this wacky kind of ‘80s comedy & love the “one crazy night” thing in stuff like this & License To Drive, etc. Can see why this one isn’t as well known, though. It’s pretty bad. But Keanu is really drunk at one point & acts exactly like Ted Theodore Logan & it’s hilarious. And, holy shit, the bar band in this consists of George Clinton & Bootsy Collins. With them & Keanu & the so-very-‘80s plot, this movie should’ve been epic. It actually looked quite good, too? Like how it was filmed or whatever – it didn’t appear low budget. It’s a shame that it still ended up being quite bad with so much going for it. But I still love Keanu. So it gets an extra half point for Keanu. – 6/10

All You Need Is Kill, In The Blink Of An Eye, Hoppers, The Strange Dark & M3GAN 2.0 Reviews

Image

Some sci-fi for you today. Most of them were disappointing… (Hoppers. Ugh.)

Image

All You Need Is Kill – Was excited to see this as I love anime & really like the story (I should clarify my knowledge is from Edge of Tomorrow but I’d like to read the book). Did love the look of this film, especially the alien plant. But I think Edge of Tomorrow is the better film. I wanted to love this, as it has all the elements that work for me. Mainly, I think the characters were just a bit weak. But am still glad I got to see this & did really enjoy it. – 7.5/10

My ranking of all anime films I’ve seen here

Image

Image

In The Blink Of An Eye – Was looking forward to this sci-fi (favorite genre) film from Andrew Stanton (director of WALL-E, which I adore). Disappointing. Three (loosely) interconnected stories, none of which are very strong. There are fleeting moments of emotion at how insignificant we are in the universe but the movie is not as profound as it thinks. It tries very hard to make you feel something. I wish I had.

However, I will always appreciate original sci-fi being made. Although this one didn’t really work for me, I didn’t think it was bad. I think it’s one that someone could also very easily end up loving. It does have some good moments. I just wish the stories & especially the characters had been stronger. The characters needed much more development for us to care about them. I think only the caveman story came somewhat close to that. But, seriously, thumbs up for original sci-fi. I’ll still want to watch anything else that Stanton might make. – 6.5/10

Hoppers – Pixar made some absolute masterpieces & some of my all-time favorite films. But it’s been over a decade now since their last truly great film (Inside Out) and, after Hoppers, I think I may have to finally give up the hope of ever getting another great Pixar film. This showed some promise at the start, with a decent female lead & lovely relationship with her grandmother. But then it all went to shit.

I certainly don’t mind a “weird” plot. Hell, what’s much more crazy than the plot of Monsters, Inc (my 2nd favorite Pixar, all ranked here, & one of their masterpieces)?! But that movie had amazing & well-developed characters, brilliant humor, and loads of heart to go along with its extremely inventive story. The story in Hoppers was a mess & there wasn’t enough character development to make me care about anyone. All the baddies were silly in an offensively dumb way & I’m not a fan of the style of animation used in so many of the recent Pixar films. The main character is a 19-year-old with a grown-up topic but it’s written like it’s for toddlers? I’m confused on who this film is even aimed at. These recent films just don’t feel like Pixar. Hoppers, Turning Red, Luca etc feel like they’re coming from a completely different & far less respected studio. I’d probably be less harsh if they didn’t have the Pixar name on them, to be fair. But they are so far below the standards I came to expect from Pixar years ago.

But maybe I’m wrong. Sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy when I see the very high ratings for current releases on Letterboxd. Am I far too picky? Or is everyone else just not picky enough? This currently has a 3 point EIGHT out of 5 rating? Are people for real????? I need some more Gen-Xers to please go see this & then come onto Letterboxd & tell me you agree with me that this sucked. Please. I do feel like I’m going crazy. 🤪

I’m going to be nice & pretend this is from a different studio & give it an extra half a star that it doesn’t really deserve as a Pixar release. – 6/10

Image

Image

The Strange Dark – Gave this a shot as I’ve found some obscure sci-fi gems & this was compared to movies such as Coherence. Sadly, I don’t think it’s another gem but I did like it okay. The story was fun, it just wasn’t the deep sci-fi concept I was expecting. The characters were likeable, though, and I wasn’t bored (but it’s very short!). Not a waste of time but I’d recommend Coherence, Primer, The Frame, etc etc first… – 6/10

Image

Image

M3GAN 2.0 – Wasn’t a big fan of the first film, which I thought was pretty ridiculous but at least a bit of throwaway fun. Must say this worked much better as shitty horror than as shitty sci-fi, though. I was kind of looking forward to the shift, being a big sci-fi fan, but it didn’t work. I can enjoy dumb horror but I prefer smart sci-fi. – 5.5/10

Crime 101, Cold Storage, Send Help & Wuthering Heights Reviews

Image

Some good 2026 films today (well, one was kind of shit…)

Image

Crime 101 – Liked this sleek & stylish crime thriller a lot. I don’t love this genre, so it’s nice when I do really enjoy one. Great character development, especially for Hemsworth’s & Berry’s characters (who were also both smokin’ hot). See how easy it is to make characters we care about? Other movies should try that. Very happy to get a smart crime thriller that’s not just big action sequences. Good stuff.

May be my favorite release of the year (so far – it’ll change, hopefully with the release of Project Hail Mary). Ranked list here. – 8/10

Image

Image

Cold Storage – This was really good fun. Was hoping it would be a throwback to that cheesy kind of ‘80s comedy horror such as Night Of The Creeps & I’d say it pretty much achieves that. I feel I should give it 4 stars as it’s exactly what I was hoping for from a movie like this & I probably “enjoyed” it more than most other 2026 releases so far. Some big stars for a cheesy horror as well! I’ve talked myself into raising it to a 4 from a 3.5 on Letterboxd. – 7.5/10 (on a 10 scale, which I prefer to the Letterboxd 5 star scale)

Image

Image

Send Help – Like Cold Storage, this was also really good fun. The kind of wacky comedy horror & gore you expect from Sam Raimi. Wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan, although I like his stuff okay. Probably liked this one slightly more, though, thanks to the always great Rachel McAdams. Loved her in this plus Dylan O’Brien was perfect as well. They really made this film, which would’ve just been just an “okay” horror without them. Thoroughly enjoyed. – 7.5/10

Image

Image

Wuthering Heights – Still not sure how I feel about this. It’s not awful but it’s trash. “Pretty” trash. I liked Fennell‘s Promising Young Woman & even the divisive Saltburn. The shock value of Saltburn just worked (for me) & was much more entertaining than this, which I found boring. And also completely unsexy? Did these two assholes actually make anyone horny?! Oh well. We still have the far superior Kate Bush song. – 6.5/10

Dreams, The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, The Ugly Stepsister & Harvey Reviews

Image

Here are some of the best films I watched in January.

The Ugly Stepsister poster is messing up the lovely blue movie poster vibe…

Image

Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams – This is the first film I watched for 2026 as I always try to start on a good one & I love Kurosawa. Loved this too, although it’s not up there with his absolute best. I’m a sucker for anthologies. Some of the stories were better than others but I loved that the tunnel one felt like The Twilight Zone & the fox one felt like a whimsical Studio Ghibli story. And the little village on the river in the final story was gorgeous. And, holy shit, I actually didn’t know beforehand that Martin Scorsese was in this?! This was a great film to start the year & I’m so glad I finally saw it, as I’ve been wanting to see it for years. I liked it a lot. – 8.5/10

My Akira Kurosawa Movie Ranking

Image

Image

The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg – Another one that’s been on my watchlist for a long time, so I finally rented it (to then find it’s on Kanopy). This film is gorgeous, which is exactly what I was wanting. I miss colorful movies SO much! I live in England, so I don’t want movies to look like the grey view outside my bloody window every day.

Really enjoyed the visuals in this & am so glad to have finally seen it. The film itself was slightly disappointing, though. I do love a bittersweet love story, so didn’t really have an issue with the story. I liked that. I think I was just getting a little annoyed with Deneuve’s character being so damn impatient. He’d only been gone a few months?! Chill, girl!

I’ve also never been a big fan of musicals where the entire thing is singing, including all the dialogue. I much prefer big musical numbers in between actual speaking. So there’s no actual song that I now remember from this? But that’s maybe just a “me” preference. Not trying to sound too negative, as I did really like this & think it’s a lovely & worthy film. Probably just set my expectations a little too high, hoping for a new favorite to add to my list (here). Although I haven’t been able to narrow that list down to less than 300 movies, this one sadly still doesn’t quite make the cut of my all-time favorite movies.

I do, however, very much want to see the other three films that are a part of this “tetralogy“ that I was unaware this was a part of… – 8/10

Image

Image

The Ugly Stepsister – Well, this was something. I liked it, as I do enjoy a good body horror. It did the body horror stuff brilliantly. I was thoroughly grossed out several times. Very fun being done as a take on Cinderella, too. Great idea, but not sure it fully worked. The Substance did better with this same theme. And, not gonna lie, I was not expecting to ever see Cinderella’s butthole in my lifetime. – 7.5/10

Image

Image

Harvey – Been on my watchlist for years as I really like Jimmy Stewart. Was worth the watch for his performance. I liked the story, as it’s certainly an original idea & I appreciate that. It’s a shame that I found a lot of the characters besides Jimmy (and Harvey!) quite annoying. Especially the sister. Overall slightly disappointed that I didn’t find the film itself as good as I was expecting. But it was a fun watch. – 7/10

Is This Thing On?, The Rip, Tron: Ares, People We Meet On Vacation & Earwig Reviews

Image

Image

Is This Thing On? – Liked this. This type of thing either works for me or I hate it (as with Marriage Story). Couldn’t fully relate to the characters in either film but at least didn’t find them as insufferable in this one. I couldn’t see what the problem was in this marriage or what was getting on Dern’s nerves but I guess that’s the point. That’s marriage. The film was slow, though. A strong ending & great song helped make up for that a little. – 7/10

Image

The Rip – Not my favorite sort of genre but I thought this was quite good, especially for straight-to-streaming. Quality actors & decent story. A solid film but also a little forgettable I fear. I feel like I’ll barely remember this in a year. It’s missing something but I don’t know what. It’s a perfectly good film. (How did this review end up sounding so negative?! Ignore me & watch it if it’s your type of thing! It’s fine!) – 6.5/10

Image

Tron: Ares – I really like Tron & thought Legacy was good (helped by Daft Punk making one of my favorite film scores ever for it). So, although the NIN score was good here, it didn’t live up to Daft Punk. Plus there was added Leto, which no one wanted. But not sure Leto was the problem. The story was messy. Still not enough to make me dislike the series & the end has me excited for another (hopefully better) Tron film. – 6.5/10

Image

People We Meet On Vacation – This was fine. I’ve not read the book, so probably means less to me. Found the girl a bit too annoying. I think that was maybe partly the point, that she needed to grow up a bit, but she’s someone this introvert would always avoid. Meh. But, hey, Cameron from Ferris Bueller is in this (I’m more of a Cameron, who would hate Poppy). Although he was friends with massive extrovert Ferris. Hmm… – 6.5/10

Image

Earwig – I love weird movies. I’d rather a movie be weird & memorable than boring. But I either love or hate them, as some are trying too hard to be weird for no reason? This is one of those for me. Far too slow. Had a decent score & imagery but not good enough to make this watchable. Is probably deep & meaningful & I’m too dumb to understand it. But it didn’t hold my interest enough for me to even try.

I love having another film to add to one of my favorite lists, though (it’s near the bottom with the ones I didn’t really like): Weird Movies I Love… And Hate. – 5/10

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Hamnet, Die My Love & Marty Supreme Reviews

Image

Image

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – Can I both like & hate this? Am a fan of these films & liked the last one a lot. I’m a big lover of horror but a big hater of gore, which makes watching horror films quite a challenge. Some cross a line into unnecessary cruelty & this one did for me. I like good stories and/or characters, not torture porn. I really liked all the Ralph Fiennes stuff, especially that bonkers ending (this Maiden fan loved that). And the further ending we knew was coming but is still what I really wanted to see & hopefully see much more of in the next film? I want to see a community trying to work together to survive again, not just a bunch of cruel psychos in wigs.

Image

I just really didn’t like the Jimmy thing & don’t think we needed an entire movie devoted to them. But I did always dislike The Walking Dead every time they’d find yet another group of evil psychos & I’d think “can we just get back to fighting zombies?”. I know a big part of these “zombie” movies (I know they aren’t zombies here) is humanity itself proving to be the true horror story. But I’m not sure if that was the point of this film. Actually, I’m not sure if this one had much of a point at all, besides upping the violence to a disturbing degree? It’s just disappointing after a very strong start to these three Years films. I hope we can get back to more of what we saw in the last film & to some semblance of decency in a world gone to shit.

I don’t know. I really did like some of this film while also really hating it crossing that torture porn line for me. It makes it a hard film to rate. But I’m still hopeful for the next film. (Yes, I know my rating seems high with this review but I do like this series & this is still so far my favorite 2026 release) – 7.5/10

Oh! I have to add that my teen daughter the other day told me she had to “school” her friends on zombie movies when they called the 28 films zombie movies. She told them how they’re not zombies in these films & started recommending them some Romero. Ha! What have I created?! (That’s awesome, though. I’m so proud) 🥲

Image

Hamnet – Not my type of thing, but this was good & easily my favorite Best Picture nominee (I’ve not seen 2 – I’ve ranked the rest here). Scratch that – I wrote this review before seeing Sentimental Value & my favorite is now between that & this. It’s very close. Jessie Buckley was great & worthy of her nomination. Slow to start but I cared about the family & the ending was strong & moving. Very good child acting too. I’ve been disappointed with most Best Picture nominees in recent years but I’d be happy to see this one win (it won’t). – 8/10

Image

Die My Love – Liked this. Not as insane as people made it seem, so I was expecting another Mother!. Thought Jennifer Lawrence was very good & it’s a shame she wasn’t nominated for the performance. Also really liked Sissy Spacek. Pattinson wasn’t given much to do but that’s fine as the film isn’t about him. What asshole gets a brand new mother a dog without telling her, though?! Dumbass. I’d have flipped too. – 7.5/10

Image

Marty Supreme – What I expected. Totally frantic. Unlikeable characters, especially Chalamet’s. Entertaining as you certainly didn’t know what to expect at any point, but not the “inspirational” story portrayed in trailers. Needed way more ping pong. Oh, but nice to hear The Order Of Death! Preferred its use in Hardware, though (and far prefer that film, too).

I knew I wouldn’t love this. Just like One Battle After Another. Both are just okay. What am I missing with all the big Oscar contenders of the past decade? They don’t make me feel anything. – 7/10

Gremlins – 9/10
When Harry Met Sally – 8.5/10
It’s A Wonderful Life – 8.5/10
Scrooged – 8.5/10
The Muppet Christmas Carol – 8.5/10

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer – 10/10
How The Grinch Stole Christmas – 9.5/10
Frosty The Snowman – 7.5/10

Shorts Watched:

Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical – Most of these modern Snoopy Presents shorts have been pretty good despite the animation with the added shadows or whatever. Give me the classic Peanuts look! But the voices in this one were very off as well (especially Charlie Brown). I’m just too used to the classic Peanuts stuff from the Charlie Brown Christmas era. This was still enjoyable, though. But could do without it being a musical.

Concert Attended

Gary Numan – This wasn’t December but I forgot to post about it at the time. Numan was at a local venue so the daughter & I went. It was a great show! We loved it. I know that in America when I was a kid in the ’80s, Numan was a one-hit wonder with Cars. Same goes for Madness (US hit: Our House). Was interesting to move to the U.K. & find that certain artists were far more than one-hit wonders. At this concert, Numan performed his album Telekon & various other songs. Very electronic & industrial (Nine Inch Nails were heavily influenced by Telekon apparently). I do especially love Are ‘Friends’ Electric? & M.E. which I certainly didn’t know as a teen in the ’80s (sadly didn’t perform those, though – but was still a great time). Photo above is one I took – we were very close to the stage. 🙂

TV SHOWS WATCHED

Plur1bus: S1 – Finally! Another weirdo sci-fi “me” type of show. Really liking this. Great idea & that crazy first episode had me hooked. Rhea Seehorn is great in it & the whole thing feels very unique. As of now as I’m writing this (in January), I’m finally giving Severance another shot. I’m liking that too but not in the same sort of way. Both are “weird sci-fi”, but Severance feels a bit aimless & maybe trying too hard to be weird? But Plur1bus seems to have its shit together more (so far). Can’t wait for Season 2.

Behind Her Eyes: S1 – I don’t normally get suckered into watching something like this based on Twitter (Sorry, X) comments, but people kept going on & on about the shocking twist in this. So, curiosity got the better of me. It’s not a good show. I wasn’t really feeling it at all, but wanted to see this big twist so I kind of binged this while admittedly doing other things & not giving it my full attention. I just didn’t care about these characters at all (except maybe the kid – that poor kid!!). It also took far too long to get to the “good” stuff (as in, the weirdo supernatural shit that I love). Think it wasn’t until the third or maybe even the second to last episode? But as soon as they showed the “thing” that they can do (trying to be spoiler-free), I instantly knew the twist. I guess I just watch too many things like this. So, I wasn’t the slightest bit shocked like everyone else seemed to be. It was fun, though. Yes, fun twist. But I’ve seen similar…

IT: Welcome To Derry: S1 E7-8 – It’s fine but I’m not really feeling it.

South Park: S28 E5 – F*^k yeah, Woodland Critter Christmas!

Down Cemetery Road: S1 E1-4 – Meh. Not really feeling this one. Don’t know if I’ll continue.

TV Rewatched:

The Twilight Zone: The Masks & An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge – Okay, I actually saw these early in the year when I finally bought a boxset of all the episodes, as this is my all-time favorite show. But I forgot to post about them then. The plan was to work through them all with the daughter but life has been too busy. Owl Creek Bridge is good but an odd one as it was an existing story but I think I read that Serling liked it, so it was adapted as it was a very Twilight Zone-like story? Good but has a very different feel to it. The Masks is a classic. If I were to make a Twilight Zone Top Ten, it would probably just make it into the ten (you know I probably will someday)! Sadly, I waited too long to show these to the daughter as she’s often guessing the twists (I first saw these at maybe age 8?).

BOOKS READ

Strange Pictures by Uketsu – Thoroughly enjoyed this strange mystery novel by anonymous masked Japanese author Uketsu (as shown above). Admit I’m a sucker for the mysterious artist thing. Love stuff like Banksy & especially adore Daft Punk (although do know what they look like). More artists should be mysterious!

Anyway, this novel contains several mysteries combining into one overall story & all revolve around analysing strange drawings, scattered throughout the book. It was just a very fun & unique way to tell this story. Fairly short book & a very easy read. I asked for both of his books for Christmas & I finished them both before the New Year. Is it the best writing ever? No, but that’s not really the point. There’s some very farfetched stuff as well, so suspend your disbelief & just enjoy the story. It’s no Agatha Christie mystery but it’s a very fun read. Enjoyed it a lot. It’s rare for me to just spend an entire day reading a book, as I get bored, so a book usually takes me at least a month to finish. I didn’t want to put this one down. And I’m definitely going to pre-order his next novel, which I think comes out in March. – 4.5/5

Image

Strange Houses by Uketsu – Read this one second, and glad I didn’t start with this one. I still thoroughly enjoyed this one as well but the story is crazy & it’s WAY more farfetched than Strange Pictures. Strange Pictures is the better of the two & the one I’d recommend first if you’re intrigued. I still loved this one, though. I love “weird”, so being so crazy isn’t going to put me off. This book focused on drawings of strange floor plans, which slowly revealed the secrets of the families living in them. Again, this was such an unusual way to tell a story. I didn’t want to put this one down either. I’m definitely a new fan. – 4/5

Image

The List Of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey – Not my type of thing so much but the plot synopsis was good (from Amazon): “Yorkshire, 1979. Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South. Because of the murders. Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn’t an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv’s mum stopped talking. Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all? So, Miv and Sharon decide to make a list: a list of all the suspicious people and things down their street. People they know. People they don’t. But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families – and between each other – than they ever thought possible. What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?

Liked this, especially as it’s one of those books where you get chapters focusing on specific people (in this case the people who the girls put on their list of “suspects”). Did end up caring about the characters, which is important to me, and was interested in what would happen to each of them & their individual stories. It ends up being a much darker book than it at first seems & I didn’t like what happened with one of the characters. Not sure if/why that was necessary? This was worth a read but it overall didn’t quite connect with me despite having good characters & being set in an era I always like. Not sure why I didn’t like it a bit more. Maybe due to what happens with the one character? But it’s a good book. – 3.5/5

BLOG PLANS FOR THE COMING MONTH

I’m working on my 2025 Top Ten Lists, which I will try to post tomorrow. Because I’m a list maniac! And I’ll try to keep on top of posting movie reviews in a timely manner this year. And on replying to comments! I’m so sorry! Life has been so hectic these past few months. 😭

Upcoming Movies I Want To See:

Well, I just saw Marty Supreme so will post that review soon (I was underwhelmed). Very much looking forward to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (though unhappy the daughter can’t join me for it as this one is an 18 unlike the last one which was a 15. Damn). Should probably go to Hamnet as I’m sure it’ll be up for Oscars but it really doesn’t interest me. Primate looks like a bit of dumb fun.

I’m really just waiting for Project Hail Mary in March! Cannot WAIT. Absolutely adored that book.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, Fountain Of Youth, The Family Plan 2, The Lost Bus & The Great Flood Reviews

Image

The Great Flood – Liked this. Starts out a disaster film, which I was looking forward to, but it got a lot better when it turned into the genre I love most. That was a nice surprise, as I’d not read much about this. A great story idea that the movie sadly doesn’t quite live up to. It was also hard to get into this at first, until you realise what’s going on. Just wish the movie was better, as I liked the story. But I still enjoyed it. – 7/10

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 – Umm. These movies are okay. I guess. They’re very much aimed at my daughter’s age group as they played the game. She keeps getting annoyed when I say I definitely preferred Willy’s Wonderland, though. Feels like these movies should be more comedy/horror than just horror? Should be a bit more fun. – 6/10

Fountain Of Youth – Watched this a few weeks ago & at the time was thinking it wasn’t that bad. Indiana Jones-light. But I now seriously remember almost nothing about this. So…. Maybe it was a little bland… – 6/10

The Family Plan 2 – This was fine. If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one as it’s just more of the same. Not much more to say than that. We get so many straight-to-streaming films exactly like this one. It’s hard to keep them straight. I’ll forget this in a year. – 6/10

The Lost Bus – An interesting & very tense true story that this film somehow managed to make a little boring? Not sure how? Think there was maybe too much pointless setup at the start, without any true character development, before finally getting to the heart of the story. But by that point I still didn’t really know or care that much about the characters. Maybe a documentary would’ve been better for this one. – 6/10

Elf – 8.5/10
American Pie – 8/10

Anaconda, The Housemaid, Scandal & Caligula Reviews

Image

The Housemaid – Trashy thrillers are a big guilty pleasure, so I was going to enjoy this. I read the book first, which ruins this type movie a bit as it’s all about the excitement of learning the big twists (even when predictable). But it was still fun seeing the audience reactions & they were clearly enjoying this. What can I say? It’s a fun trashy thriller! It knows it is & it did it well. But, yes, Seyfried is by far the best one in this. – 6.5/10

Anaconda – Disappointing. I love Jack Black & Paul Rudd, so was looking forward to this. It started out okay & I still liked Black & Rudd. Gotta love film lover friends! It falls apart when the real anaconda stuff starts happening. And then it didn’t even have much of that? Why didn’t it go full-on monster movie from that point? Could’ve done a big From Dusk Till Dawn genre switch! Missed opportunity. – 5.5/10

Scandal – Another one I saw thanks to Talking Pictures TV. I knew very little about the Profumo affair but was curious thanks to We Didn’t Start The Fire (seriously). I felt this film was more concerned with being “saucy” than informative. Didn’t feel I learned much other than that the girls were teenagers (gross). John Hurt & Joanne Whalley were good, though. I can’t say the same of Ian McKellen’s hair… Oh – I guess I learned from this film that the Fine Young Cannibals singer did some acting. – 6.5/10

Caligula: The Ultimate Cut – I never saw the controversial original version of this. It sounds like this one is very different & much better, with a lot of unused footage? Did they take out some porn? Not sure, but it still had plenty! And a far too graphic rape scene. As a film, this one isn’t terrible. And it clearly stars some good actors. I’d never watch it again but it’s worth a one-time watch for curious film fans. It’s an experience. – 6.5/10

Left-Handed Girl, Jay Kelly, Wake Up Dead Man & Relay Reviews

Image

Left-Handed Girl – Felt a lot like The Florida Project, but with more likeable characters. The little girl was cute, I liked the setting, and nothing really happened (until the end). A good but not “great” film. Worth a watch, though. – 7/10

Jay Kelly – Almost skipped this as it’s Noah Baumbach & I couldn’t handle another Marriage Story filled with insufferable twats. This was much better, though. Maybe as I’m more interested in the life of a big actor & liked how it captured a bit of that “movie magic” feeling at the end. Clooney & Sandler are both really good. Not a lot of story & longer than needed but at least I didn’t hate a Baumbach film this time. – 7/10

Wake Up Dead Man – I like but don’t love these. Knives Out is still the best by far, but was happy this one was an improvement on Glass Onion. I liked the setting of the small village & church and the acting was quality. Was disappointed the smaller characters were very underdeveloped & I wasn’t that interested in the mystery itself. The actors in these films do help to elevate the somewhat underwhelming stories. – 7/10

Relay – Decent straight-to-streaming thriller. As far as I’m aware? It wasn’t in cinemas anywhere near me. Certainly better than several of the films in this genre that I did see in the cinema this year. Interesting story & good performances from Riz Ahmed & Lily James. Plus an ending I wasn’t expecting. – 7/10

Echo Valley, She Rides Shotgun, Clown In A Cornfield & Code 3 Reviews

Image

Echo Valley – Didn’t mind this, even though Sweeney’s character pissed me the hell off. Her mother was far too nice! Very much my type of thriller, though. Julianne Moore & Fiona Shaw were good & I liked the ending. Good enough for me. One of the better Apple TV releases of the past year (for me, at least – I know it’s not perfect). – 7/10

She Rides Shotgun – Not too bad. Guess it’s what you’d call a slow burn. It didn’t really make me feel much for the characters, though, other than the young girl who did a great job. Worked best at the start when focusing on the father/daughter relationship. Liked its vibe, probably thanks mostly to a good score. So, I had to look up who did the score (Blanck Mass). Love a good score! (Upped my rating half a star as the girl, Ana Sophia Heger, really was so good in this). – 7/10

Clown In A Cornfield – This was kind of fun. No, it doesn’t exactly bring anything new to the slasher genre but it was entertaining enough & who doesn’t like creepy clowns? The teens were hateful, as per usual, and the backstory isn’t surprising but it’s relatable (some teens really do suck). Don’t know if it’s the start of a new franchise but appreciate its title & sense of humor, which I’d have liked ramped up more. – 6.5/10

Code 3 – This was okay. Not really my sort of genre. But it got the right level of comedy mixed with drama. Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery & Aimee Carrero worked really well together. I liked their encounters with the asshole doctor. I can’t imagine a more stressful job. – 6/10

The Gorge, Eternity, My Dead Friend Zoe & All Of You Reviews

Image

Image

The Gorge – Really liked this, but this sort of genre is very much my thing. The best bits involved Teller & Taylor-Joy communicating & getting to know each other from their separate towers (reminded me of my favorite parts of 2004’s Dawn Of The Dead with Gun Store Andy – does this mean I like people kept at a distance or something?!). Not sure how I felt about them saying “F*^k keeping humanity safe – I need some nookie!” but, whatever – I guess they were horny. I thought they had decent chemistry & I liked the love story set next to this strange & potentially apocalyptic gorge. This is the best part of the movie & it’s more interesting while the gorge remains mysterious & unknown.

I assume most people definitely preferred this first section of the film, as it then took a turn & got far more weird than I was expecting. The weirdness worked for me, but will definitely not have worked for everyone. The “creatures”, though they looked a bit dodgy at first (a very “video game” look to them), were sort of so ridiculous that they ended up kind of cool? At least we got some unique designs. Especially as things got even weirder & we entered body horror/Society territory. Would’ve liked more of that!

I feel like, in different hands, this could’ve been a better film if maybe it had gone more full-on horror at the end. But I know that’s not for everyone. We already have The Thing, right? I can understand why they kept this a bit more “sanitized”. It works as a love story & also as a not-too-scary sci-fi monster film. It’s kind of a weird mash-up and feels like two entirely different movies but, well, it worked for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Easily my favorite of the straight-to-streaming films of 2025. But it’s admittedly an odd one, so is definitely a like it or hate it film. I liked it a lot. – 7.5/10

Image

Eternity – Enjoyed this. Always love a story that feels unique & original. Was confused by everyone talking about the first husband being so handsome & then he turns up looking almost exactly the same as Miles Teller. Liked that the story wasn’t completely predictable & all the adverting in the background for the various eternities was fun (loved the one being at full capacity). Need more original films like this. – 7.5/10

Image

My Dead Friend Zoe – This was really good. Sonequa Martin-Green & Natalie Morales were great & very believable as Army friends. I thought it handled a difficult subject very well & with sensitivity & respect. Ed Harris & Morgan Freeman were also very good & that ending hits hard. Not sure why some good films like this one get no attention. Deserves to be seen. – 7.5/10

Image

All Of You – At first thought this was gonna be like that TiMER movie with a great sci-fi twist on the romcom but then this movie didn’t really use that at all? In fact, I forgot about that little element of this. But it’s a good “Dammit, they should be together! Why are they not together?!” story. Really like Poots & Goldstein & they had great chemistry. But her character did really piss me off sometimes… *Poots!*7/10

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Oh. What. Fun., Goodbye June & F1 Reviews

Image

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – It’s a Mission Impossible film. It plays out like all the rest of them. I’m not a huge fan of spy films for some reason I can’t explain, but I do think these are very good examples of the genre. I find I can never follow the story in between all the huge action scenes & I lose interest. But I did like the “rogue AI” plot in these last two, probably because it made it a little more sci-fi, which is a genre I do love. Meh. – 6.5/10

Oh. What. Fun. – This. was. fun. Admit it helps that I like Michelle Pfeiffer, but I did also like seeing a Christmas movie focusing on the under-appreciated mothers who work so hard to make Christmas special for everyone else. I feel so sorry for those women. Pfeiffer & Felicity Jones help elevate this average & slightly too silly Christmas film. I’ve certainly seen far, far worse in this genre. – 6.5/10

Goodbye June – This was, obviously, very sad. I thought it portrayed family & dealing with the terminal illness & impending death of their mother/grandmother in a pretty realistic way. Made me sad but at the same time happy to be an only child. It’s lonely but there’s no sibling fights. Families are complicated! Weird to make it a “Christmas movie”, as if the holidays aren’t depressing enough… – 6.5/10

F1 – This was fine. I was a little bored. Sorry. All racing movies kind of feel the same to me. Kerry Condon was good. Is Brad not way too old for this role? No clue. Preferred Ford v Ferrari. And Rush. – 6.5/10

TV SHOWS WATCHED

Andor: S1 (rewatch) & S2 – Dragged my feet on watching season 2 as my hubby (biggest Star Wars fan I’ve ever known personally) loved season 1 & rewatched it many times. It breaks my heart that he never got to see season 2 & I didn’t feel up to watching it without him when it came out. He’d have loved it. It was absolutely brilliant. I did like season 1 a lot, but didn’t absolutely adore it in the same way that he did. Am glad that I rewatched season 1 beforehand, as I appreciated it much more this time & was immediately hooked from the start of season 2. Why can’t all the new Star Wars content be this good?! Amazing show. And as soon as I finished it, I rewatched Rogue One again & had an even further appreciation of that as well. Am glad that Andor won some Emmys, right? Definitely deserved.

Next up: The Mandalorian & Grogu. I can’t WAIT but that’s also going to be extremely bittersweet. Can’t believe he won’t be seeing that either. It’s not fair.

Squid Game: The Challenge: S2 – I hate myself anytime I watch a reality show, as I think they’re trash. But, dammit, I like these fake Squid Game shows. I can’t help it. And why the hell are 90% of the contestants total twats? Especially those two bald guys. I didn’t really care who was gonna win, as long as it wasn’t one of them. Man, why do I watch this shit?? I enjoyed this, though. Not gonna lie. They must have quite a budget for this? Some elaborate games! Liked that Chutes & Ladders one.

All Her Fault: S1 – A twisty, trashy thriller is my guilty pleasure so this looked right up my alley. Yep, it was. Had fun with this & liked seeing both Snook & Fanning in this as well as Sophia Lillis (who I thought would be bigger after It). Decent enough twists that I didn’t immediately guess. A bit forgettable, though. In fact, I watched a similar thing the next month & started writing about that one under this one as I confused the two. They’re all interchangeable.

IT: Welcome To Derry: S1 E3-6 – I know I’m a big Stephen King dork & watch everything to do with him but I just really can’t get into this show. Plus it’s quite nasty. I dunno.

South Park: S28 E2-4 – I’ll always like this f^%ked-up show. I’m not easily offended. But found it funny that them messing with my beloved Totoro is the closest I’ve ever been to being offended by South Park. 🙃 That’s sacred!!

Grey’s Anatomy: S22 E5-6 – I’m so f^%king sick of the Teddy & Owen drama.

The Chair Company: S1 E1-2 – Thought I’d try a new show. Wasn’t feeling this.

The Rehearsal: S1 E1 – Thought I’d try a new show. Was feeling this even less. Bizarre.

BOOKS READ

No books finished in November…

BLOG PLANS FOR THE COMING MONTH

Hope to post reviews this week of all the December movies that I watched, so I can move on with 2026 after that. Maybe early next week I’ll try to post my 2025 year end Top Ten lists.

Upcoming Movies I Want To See:

Going to see Anaconda despite the bad reviews & The Housemaid because I read the book & trashy thrillers are my guilty pleasure. And will watch Marty Supreme once it’s at my local cinema after the 1st of January.

Freakier Friday, Hedda, Frankenstein, Heart Eyes & Until Dawn Reviews

Image

Hope everyone had a great Christmas! 🎄 Just wanna get these November reviews out of the way so I can move onto December before 2026…

Image

Freakier Friday – This was exactly what I expected from a family Disney film. It was fun & in the same spirit as the first film. A bit cheesy & ridiculous, yeah, and of course entirely predictable. As was the first film. And there’s nothing wrong with that sometimes. Fun to see these characters again & to get some new additions to the family. – 6.5/10

Image

Frankenstein (2025) – Meh. I don’t have much to say. Feel like I’m missing something here. Why such a high rating? It’s a great original story, yes. Yet this adaptation somehow managed to be rather boring? And I thought all the acting was a bit iffy. I find del Toro very hit or miss, though. This wasn’t terrible but I was just hoping for something better based on how great Pan’s Labyrinth is, I guess. – 6/10

Image

Hedda – This was fine but I was a bit bored. Knew nothing of the original story. One of those films where the acting is much better & more interesting than the story itself. All did a very good job in these roles but it wasn’t really enough to make me care about what would happen to any of these characters. And I wanted it to be saucier! Could’ve spiced this one up much more… – 6/10 (By the way – Imogen Poots is in this. *Poots!*)

Image

Heart Eyes – Was hoping this would be better. An okay villain & main couple but I think they should have added much more comedy (it’s meant to be a horror comedy, right?). It should have been a lot more fun, which would’ve really worked. Instead, it just ended up another somewhat forgettable slasher film. Oh well – I’d still watch a sequel. I think they could make something better from this if they try again. – 6/10

Image

Until Dawn – I didn’t know this was a video game. When I found out later, its complete mess of a story then made sense. Probably fun to play but boring to just sit & watch. It absolutely feels like a video game movie. Dumb story & bland characters. I didn’t care what was going to happen to them. Now I don’t feel bad that I missed out on this one in the cinema. – 5.5/10

Image

Movies Rewatched In November:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Rewatched this immediately after finally watching Andor series 2. My god, Andor was brilliant! I think Rogue One is great, although I didn’t instantly love it like others did. Think it just felt so very different to the Star Wars I grew up on. Watching Andor has given me an even further appreciation of Rogue One. Wish all the modern day Star Wars stuff could be as good as this, Andor & The Mandalorian. My Star Wars Ranking. – 9/10

Image

Predator – Rewatched before Badlands (which I loved). My main memory of this is going on a 1st date in the ‘90s & renting a movie. He let me choose & was shocked I chose Predator as I’d not yet seen it & wanted to as I like Schwarzenegger (big Terminator fan). Date dude made me feel weird. Am I weird?! I do love this film still. It’s not quite up there with The Terminator & T2 but it’s still one of Arnie’s best. – 8/10

La Strada, Nights Of Cabiria, Le Samouraï, Breathless & Incendies Reviews

Image

Have to take this opportunity to quickly say RIP to Rob Reiner & his wife Michele. Tragic & heartbreaking. Reiner was one of my favorite directors by far with The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally & This Is Spinal Tap being all-time favorites that I adore. Brilliant films. What an amazing career. Am very sad about this one. 💔

I had a post of rubbish movies scheduled for today, but changed it to this one with these great foreign films that I saw recently. Reiner deserves to be mentioned alongside other amazing filmmakers.

Image

La Strada – Embarrassing to admit this is my first Fellini film & also that I didn’t know it was gonna be depressing. Oh but I loved Giulietta Masina! She was adorable & what an amazing stage presence. So while the film is a difficult watch thanks to Quinn’s character being a massive dickhead, Masina still adds so much heart to the film & I ended up liking it quite a lot thanks to her. I’m depressed now but also a new fan. – 8.5/10

Image

Nights Of Cabiria – Fellini film #2 for me after absolutely loving Giulietta Masina in La Strada. What a star! Loved her in this as well, although I think I prefer La Strada as a film overall. She’s a great character in this. Loved her spirit & attitude while remaining a hopeless romantic. How could anyone break her heart?! A sad film that at least manages to be somewhat uplifting, again thanks to Masina‘s performance.

I know I need to watch more Fellini, but now I’m worried that I won’t like his films as much when his wife isn’t starring in them? – 8/10

Image

Le Samouraï – This was so stylish. And, man, this dude was handsome! Loved the look of this film – it reminded me of the look of PlayTime which I also watched recently. Maybe a little thin on plot & I’m not sure this dude was actually very good at his job, but who cares when you’re hot & everything looks cool AF. – 8/10

Image

Breathless – My first Jean-Luc Godard. Sorry! Just not yet gotten around to exploring French New Wave. Jean Seberg was great! Star power. Sounds like she had quite an interesting real life, too. Her character could’ve done so much better than to be with that prick, though. I hated that guy! Again, like with Le Samouraï also watched recently, a little thin on plot but I didn’t care as it was stylish & cool as hell.

FYI – this was on Talking Pictures TV in the U.K., which has some real gems. Also saw Nights Of Cabiria this way. Check it out! I’m planning to watch Scandal on it this week too. – 8/10

Image

Incendies – Well, thanks to social media I had the twist spoiled as they post an image from this so often that I was able to figure it out. It’s a very good film but also just so depressing & with such a sense of hopelessness the entire time, which is not my sort of thing. I think Denis Villeneuve is a great filmmaker, though, so this one is definitely worth a watch for fans of his work. – 8/10

Boy Kills World, Conan The Barbarian, The Running Man (2025) & Locked Reviews

Image

Image

Boy Kills World – Enjoyed this. I think it really captured the ‘70s/‘80s dystopian comic book vibe & if this had been made then, it would be a cult classic now. Loved the comedy & the video game-inspired voiceover was hilarious. Bill Skarsgård is perfect (and adorable). Rarely a modern film inspired by my childhood era gets the vibe right but this, and Turbo Kid, nailed it. Very fun. I enjoyed this much more than the similar Kick-Ass films. – 7.5/10

Image

Conan The Barbarian – I always wanted to see this Schwarzenegger film that I never got around to. I suppose I missed out on the nostalgia by not seeing it at the time. Enjoyed this but it wasn’t as “fun” as I expected. It takes itself too seriously which maybe doesn’t quite work with the, um, acting skills? And this was so horny! And bloody. Glad I finally saw it but prefer the fantasy of Clash Of The Titans from the year before this one. – 6.5/10

Image

The Running Man (2025) – Huge Stephen King fan so I was going to watch this version even though I’m happy with the Schwarzenegger film. Far prefer the ’87 film, which is the right level of “cheese” & has the look & vibe to work perfectly with that ’70s & ’80s dystopian view of the future that seems dated now (as stories like these are no longer far-fetched). That era just did dystopian sci-fi far better than now. I’m also sad at how soulless this version feels? I like Edgar Wright & this seemed like material he could really sink his teeth into? There is so much that could be said about the terrible state of the world now within the context of this story but this ends up being just a straightforward action film. I expected more than that from Wright. It was also longer than it needed to be & I was really feeling that in the disappointing final half hour of the film. And I find Glen Powell weak as a leading man, but maybe that’s just me as he’s so popular right now. I do really like this story so I guess I just wasn’t expecting to be a little bit bored while watching this. It’s not a terrible film & I’m glad I watched it. It just certainly didn’t live up to my expectations. The Long Walk is definitely the superior dystopian Stephen King adaptation of 2025. Oh – I loved the nod to Schwarzenegger in this, though. – 6.5/10

Locked – 100% watched this because Bill Skarsgård is in it. I like Bill Skarsgård. He’s adorable. But this movie wasn’t very good, sadly. And Hopkins felt very out of place. Certainly an original idea, though! So it gets an extra star for originality (plus for having Bill Skarsgård in it). – 6/10

Predator: Badlands, Train Dreams, The Fantastic 4: First Steps & Wicked: For Good Reviews

Predator: Badlands – Didn’t realize some people hated this? It must be sad to find no joy in anything. This was the most fun I’ve had watching an action film in quite a while. Already love Predator and, for me, this didn’t feel out of place in comparison just because there’s less gore & slightly less testosterone. It has great action scenes & a crazy amount of violence for its U.K. 12A rating (how did it manage that rating?!). But, yes, it also has quite well-developed characters for a sci-fi action film & a good story of friendship & family. Is that a bad thing? Predator had that camaraderie as well between the dudes? Is it only okay when it’s between men with their muscly handshakes?

Predator is a fun action film as is Badlands. It’s a great sci-fi concept that works really well in both films (as well as those in between, some being better than others but always enjoyable). I could do with rewatching some of them but feel like Badlands may be my second favorite after the original film. It’s a bit like Alien vs Aliens. Yes, Predator is still the best “film” but Badlands was a joy to watch and I loved our unlikely trio as well as the link to my beloved Alien franchise. And that planet with all its killer creatures was very inventive. Not sure how any sci-fi action fans could not have fun with this one. I want a sequel already. – 8/10

Train Dreams – The film looks beautiful and I know it probably deserves a higher rating, but it’s just not a very “me” film. It’s very, very sad. Edgerton & Jones are great, though, and very believable as a couple truly in love. I wanted them to live happily ever after with their sweet daughter. An emotional film, if that’s what you’re wanting. The montage & his ride in the plane did choke me up. A fantastic scene. – 7.5/10

The Fantastic 4: First Steps – Have liked very few MCU films since Endgame but quite liked this & much more than all other 2025 superhero films. I always like the first “character intro” movies the most, though (although this intro has happened many times!). I liked the story & the cast was good, especially Kirby. And cute baby! Look forward to seeing them with other Marvel characters in future films (that’s the plan, right?!). My MCU Ranking Here. – 7.5/10

Wicked: For Good – I’ve been a huge Wizard Of Oz fan since I was a little girl so was always curious about Wicked & finally went to the musical before the first film came out. It’s good but I was underwhelmed. I just don’t think the Wicked songs are very memorable (I can still only think of two, both from the first film) & the story is kind of fun but also a complete mess when you try to match it up with the events in The Wizard Of Oz. It’s just not the best villain origin story. Hell, they did better with Maleficent’s backstory. So, I admit I’m “Team Wizard Of Oz” and therefore just not going to be as big of a fan of Wicked with its weaker songs and its drab non-Technicolor world. Plus the fact that it messes with characters that I love.

It really is the second half of the musical that lost its way for me, so it was likely that I wasn’t going to like For Good as much. It’s a shame, as I thought they did do well with the first half of the musical for the first film. Ariana & Cynthia are very good & can sing the shit out of these rather boring songs. Indeed, they are far better than the films themselves & they outshine most everyone besides Jonathan Bailey. I liked seeing their friendship develop and quite enjoyed the first film. I think they did as well as they could with the weak source material for the second film but it somehow felt rushed despite being so long & it makes a mess of that great but complicated friendship from the first film. The story in Part 2 just kind of makes no sense, for any of the characters. Who am I meant to care about at the end of this film?

Oh well. I don’t think these are bad films at all & I did enjoy the first one. The second was a bit of a chore to watch unfold but still worth seeing for the central performances. I won’t give this too low of a score as it’s not awful, it’s just no Wizard Of Oz. Not even close. – 7/10
