What if. Hear me out. If mkimg(1) supported a “free” partition type, root-on-ZFS u-boot (RPi, RockPro64, Quartz64 in this case) images based on the VM-IMAGES would be quite doable. Here’s proof based on some gpart(8) and dd(1) acrobatics.
