Guest: Tena Stetler #NewRelease AN ANGEL'S WYLDER ASSIGNMENT

Image

I'm excited to welcome my friend Tena Stetler to the blog today. Tena has a new release that sounds terrific. I'll let her tell you all about it.

Hey Diane! So glad to be here! Thought we’d chat about the canine companion in An Angel’s Wylder Assignment her name is Adventure. Writing this book was a bit out of my wheelhouse. Challenged me at every turn, but in the end I believe it’s one of my best.

Meet Adventure from An Angel’s Wylder Assignment

Full name: Adventure

Nickname: Addy

Gender: Female

Species: Canine

Physical description: very furry buff colored, curly tail, with blue tongue about 65 lbs, friendly but protective.

Relationship to main character: She kinda belongs to the Blacksmith shop. Killian and Chinoah took over the blacksmith shop when they arrived from the future. Chinoah and the dog bonded immediately. She promised to never leave the dog on its own again. She named it Adventure because of events in the dog’s life .

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: None

Where this furbaby came from: The dog was a stray. The old owner took her in during frigid weather and left her at the blacksmith shop when he moved due to health issues.

Do you have any working or service animals in your stories? Tell us about them.

I have several working or service animals in most of my stories. A Witch’s Journey Series is all about animal rescue. Several animals in these stories have duties. The animals in my other stories are companions, mostly.

What inspired you to create this character?

Well, I try to have companion animals in most of my stories. They add so much to our daily lives and do the same to the characters in my books. Adventure seemed to just come as part of the story when I started writing it. I’m what is known as a panster (write by the seat of my pants) so my stories are character driven. Adventure stole the story in many ways and even saved a life.

What does the main character think about this furbaby? There is a deep bond there because Chinoah is a wolf shifter. Once Adventure learned to trust Chinoah in both forms they were inseparable. Killian enjoys a good bond with Adventure but not like Chinoah. He was a bit worried she Chinoah announced that the pup would be returning to present day with them when the assignment was over.

What does this furbaby add to the story? Humorous events, Heroic event, and heartwarming details.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why? Adventure is loyal, protective and adds another layer of feel good to the book.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about this furbaby.

She knows the town inside and out. Time travel or porting by magic from place to place doesn’t phase her at all.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

When Chinoah shifts into a wolf, Adventure is a bit taken back. Not quite sure what to do with this wolf in her domain. The dog gets over it rapidly.

Killian indicates Adventure must stay at the blacksmith shop while he and Chinoah port to another place in Wyoming. Chinoah disagrees and the dog jumps into her arms just as they ported. No way Adventure was going to be left behind.

Another reoccurring one is that the pup always pushes her way into the buildings first then runs straight to her rug by the wood burning stoves.

Tell us a little about the story:

Image

Warrior Angel Killian Dugan’s annual trip to the family castle in Scotland is shattered by the arrival of Legion Commander North. Killian’s skills are needed for an urgent time travel assignment. A rogue demon has escaped back in time. He must discover the why and where and stop the demon before it can damage the past and change the future.

Killian’s girlfriend Chinoah Grace, a Native American shapeshifter is included in the mission which takes them to the wild west town of Wylder, Wyoming in the year 1878. She will have her hands full fitting in and making friends.

Nothing is as it seems.  They encounter visions, spirit quests, and a mysterious shaman.  On top of it all, blending in as a blacksmith is more physically difficult than he imagined. But not as challenging as keeping his hands off his undercover wife. Will they complete their assignment or run out of time?

Ok, how about a little about the Author?

Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal tales. Some call her crazy others creative. She deals with the voices in her head by writing them down and creating a fantasy world and characters you won’t soon forget.  Her books tell tales of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. Travel, adventure, magic, and a bit of mystery flourish in her books along with a few companion animals to round out the tales.

Colorado is home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a fifty-year-old box turtle. When she’s not writing, her time is spent kayaking, camping, hiking, biking or just relaxing in the great Colorado outdoors. During the winter you can find her curled up in front of the fireplace with a good book, bowl of popcorn and mug of hot chocolate.

Tena, it was lovely having you here today. Adventure sounds like quite an character. (pun intended) I love reading about service animals. Adventure adds a lot to the story. I can see why you say she almost ran away with the story. Best wishes on your new release.

Welcome Lynn Crain & Her #NewRelease

Hi everyone!

First, thanks to Diane for allowing me to be on her blog today. I’m here to talk about my story Avenging Aingeal in the wonderful anthology Mystic Realms. It’s release day for me and a great time to reflect upon the origins of this story.

I’ve always been intrigued about elementals. You know those people who seem to be able to control the powers of air, water, earth and fire. Most of us are familiar with them through the X-Men series but there they are considered mutants and not necessarily a human’s friend.

In my stories, yes there will be more to come, they are the world’s only hope from…well…if I told you that then you’d know the whole story. There is a twist to my tales but it’s not the normal one seen in urban fantasy books though everyone who has been saved by a Protector swears they are angels.

And in a way they are. But let’s be honest, there isn’t enough of them to go around and we’ll see that more and more as the series goes on. Now back to the elementals themselves.

I decided early on I didn’t want a normal elemental so I gave each of them a gift besides their normal powers. Each of them have the power of electricity. Now some people would say that should go to the air elemental but in all honesty, the ability to make electricity lies in every aspect of being an elemental. It’s generated in the air in storms, it travels through water and earth and fire, all whom can carry the added punch of electricity. What better way to defend yourself than to make electric orbs as necessary?

Now, I’d always known what elementals were or what I considered them. I knew they were of nature but were magical as well. They personify a specific force of nature and controls all the natural power derived from that element.

What I didn’t know were a few things such as the belief in their existence was almost universal in the realms of ancient religions such as paganism. I also didn’t realize that they abide in every natural substance known to man such as trees, rivers, plants, bogs, mountains, minerals, air, clouds and on and on.

I certainly didn’t know they are considered a lower type of nature spirit who maintain the natural harmony of the planet. They are ruled by archangels and are comprised of gnomes, sylphs, undines, salamanders, elves, water babies, brownies…well…you get the idea. Almost everything we as authors use in writing fantasy of any kind are considered a type of elemental. And that was definitely a new concept to me.

Now, I’ve read tons of fantasy books and am a die-hard Tolkien fan but until I studied the elementals, I never knew they were nearly every character I loved from those stories. Of course, being a writer, I do twist everything I know or learn into the weaving of my own tales. That’s what we’re supposed to do but to read and understand the history, it gives writers that extra edge to tell our stories better.
I hope you enjoyed this little foray into the background of my story. Now here are the particulars to the anthology, Mystic Realms, and my tale, Avenging Aingeal.

Excerpt:
Arching an eyebrow, I stared at him. No one in this facility could begin to hold a candle to me and I knew it. Worse, they knew it. “Whatever gave you the idea any one could kick my butt? Cause I know you can’t.” I sat there and listened to his buddies all crack up as Jonathan’s ears turned red. Now this was something I could really get into.
“Ever heard of Lukas Everhard?” The flash of puppy-like adoration almost made me lose it right then.
“You’re joking right? Everhard?” I couldn’t contain myself any longer and laughed so hard tears flowed from my eyes.  That would be the day.
“You’re just a bitch who won’t know what hit her.” His face took on a hard edge and if I hadn’t been so bored, I might have backed away.
“And you’re just an ass who will.” The orb bobbed in my hand as I stood, dangerously close to being thrown when something huge grabbed my wrist.
“You know the rules here. No fighting in the mess hall.”  The object didn’t remove itself from my body.
I whirled furious, jerking my arm away, energy in both hands now and was stopped short by the man who stood before me. I was not a small woman, yet this man dwarfed me.  Slowly, my gaze moved from his chest to his wide shoulders to his face and stopped there. Ice blue eyes stared at me without one bit of emotion attached to the look. He’s one cold cookie. I blinked rapidly almost as if I had been hit in the gut. This man was not going to take my crap in any way, shape or form. While I might be able to fool Darien somewhat as I had learned since I had arrived, I would never be able to fool this one.
Then there was the fact I felt more aware of him sexually than I had been with anyone else. Ever. There was a charisma about him which made me want to throw myself into his arms and beg to be taken.  And it was more than his physical appearance because if truth be told, this man looked good…the best I had ever seen…again a rarity for me to note. It was as if he were palpable under my hands even though we weren’t touching. My crotch tightened once more and I shook my head to clear my errant thoughts.
“Told you.” A snide voice commented somewhere off to my left.
I turned to look at my accuser, electricity leaping to my hand yet again. Some days I couldn’t control it at all. This could be a problem.
Stepping in front of me, the big man’s forefinger jabbed my chest in a hard push. “You. Me. In the sparring room immediately.”
I watched as he walked out the door, all predatory-like and with more purpose than I had seen anyone in this place have since my arrival. I eyed everyone else and realized it wouldn’t matter what I said, they were going to see if their man could best me. Sighing, I also knew I had brought this on myself. Vowing to make his fall gentle, I shook my head and followed him down the main corridor, wondering if I should even bother to introduce myself. I ran up to walk next to him and before I could even start, I was cut off by his raised hand.
“Don’t bother. I know who you are.” He kept his eyes straight forward.
Frowning, I watched him for a minute. “Yeah, but I don’t know who you are, now do I?”
He stopped in front of the sparring room door. “And that should make a difference how?” Shoving it open, he waved a hand. “Ladies first.”
“As if I’d fall for that one,” I muttered more to myself than anyone.
Scowling at me, he shook his head. “Look one of us has to go in first. The door isn’t big enough for us to go side by side.”
“Fine,” I said through clenched teeth. This would end bad, I could feel it in my bones.

Meet Author Beth Caudill

I'm happy to host author Beth Caudill. She and I watch some of the same TV shows. Like Beth, I miss Warehouse 13. Now that Rizzoli and Isles has ended, I'm missing them, too. Let's get to know Beth better.

Welcome, Beth. Please tell us about yourself.

Image

I’m Beth Caudill and I write fantasy and paranormal romance novellas. I stay-at-home and homeschool my high-functioning autistic younger son.  I also act as PTO Treasurer and Secretary for my oldest son’s school. Previously I worked in computer technical support and software quality assurance testing.
I enjoy watching NCIS and Once Upon a Time but I miss Eureka and Warehouse 13.  Like my kids when they were toddlers, I re-watch episodes of Leverage, Stargate SG1 and Rizzoli and Isles. Most of my TV watching happens on the weekend, but I do see an hour or so at night before bed. Reading is an escape I indulge in for about an hour in the morning while my husband and son get ready for the day.

Where can readers find you?

How long does it take you to write a book?

In the past, I’ve spent about a year writing a single novella.  I’m a slow writer and I hadn’t forced myself to write everyday so there were some weeks I didn’t write at all.  With my most recent story, I completed it in 3.5 months. I had a deadline to meet and made a concentrated effort to get words on the page.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Ideas for my books come from anything in everyday life.  Sometimes a line from a song or poem will spark a storyline. Fantasy art pictures, myths and fairytales all add inspiration to my stories.  I also like to collect research books on animals, myths, herbs, crystals, historical battles and lots of other topics.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have 3 published novellas and 2 novellas in edits/almost published.  Of these, my favorite is my werewolves in Healer’s Fate. However, I have a fantasy fairy novel I want to write that I love.  I can’t wait to work on it again.

What is the best part of writing for you?

My favorite part of writing is the first draft.  This is where I can be crazy, write anything down and create the world.  In revisions and edits, I need to fill in holes and allow logic to take dictate actions.

What two authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?

Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews and Anne Bishop are the authors I re-read several times a year.  Particularly if I am having difficulty with my writing.  I love disappearing into their worlds and it helps restart my creativity.

My new paranormal romance novella, Tethered, is about a Park Ranger and a Peregrine falcon shapeshifter. It is also a part of the new Zodiac Shifters group project.  Each story in the series is associated with a Zodiac sign and the main character relates to it in some way.
Tethered is an Aquarius story and my heroine Evelyn exhibits the main traits of Independence, Curiosity, and Emotional Detachment. While my town of Willows Haven is a magical setting, I don’t relate anything else to the Zodiac.

Blurb

She's a landscape photographer who disguises her true nature as a falcon shifter. He's a hard-headed park ranger who deals only in reality. But when his daughter is kidnapped by a mythical being, they must forge a bridge of trust to save the girl… and their own hearts.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Evelyn Brooks raced across a purple-tinged sky. Behind her, lightning and thunder clashed within baleful clouds. Her wings dipped in a strong crosswind and plunged her toward the earth. Muscling through the gale, she climbed into a less turbulent current. She’d never make Raleigh before getting soaked, despite the speed her Peregrine form achieved.
A ferocious roar drowned out the whistle of the wind. The upward flap of her wings faltered, and her blood chilled. Turning into a different current, she glimpsed the silhouette of an enormous beast against the storm’s clouds.
Below her, the treetops of a deciduous forest with red-kissed leaves due to an early frost stood sentry. She took shelter within the branches of an oak tree.
The whoosh of wings induced Evelyn to shrink against the tree trunk and dig her talons into the bark as the limbs swayed. A strong crosswind contorted the tree further. Another roar challenged the incoming storm’s might and silenced the nighttime creatures.
Twisting her head, she glanced through the foliage into the cloud-filled sky. A dark shadow moved against the dark gray backdrop. Gigantic wings lifted a massive creature high into the sky.
Hunted until extinct, dragons had been stripped of their scales and blood, their magic forever lost to the supernatural communities. For eons they’d guarded and sheltered those seeking wisdom or healing until humans, who couldn’t control their desires, rampaged across the earth and destroyed all the sanctuaries.
Apparently, the purge hadn’t destroyed them all, and the approaching storm had disturbed this one’s slumber.
Moving to the East Coast was supposed to keep Evelyn safe. Free her of the disturbing sense that someone watched her. Maybe stimulate her creativity and spark a burst of artistry. Instead, she was denied the escape of flight and forced to hide.
