Discussion: Stem Cells

This article has been inspired by a conversation I had with Swubird . Stem cells are cells that are found in most multi-cellular organisms; and have the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division (i.e. division of mother cell into daughter cells, genetically identical to each other and to their parents’ cell). There are two types of mammalian stem cells: embryonic and adult. This type of cells is already used in the treatment of leukaemia and some cases of anaemia, for example. Furthermore, scientists predict that in the future stem cells research will lead to the treatment of cancer, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injuries, amyotrophic later sclerosis, multiples sclerosis, muscle damage etc. Now, there has been a lot of controversy around this subject, stemming from the techniques used in the generation and usage of stem cells: to start a stem cell line it is required the destruction of a human embryo and/or therapeutic cloning. The Divine Comedy of Parenthood

There is nothing more beautiful than parenthood. I look at parents from all over the world and I am filled with immense respect for them – to raise a child, or children, is a huge responsibility; it demands a high level of wisdom, patience, dedication and (with a few exceptions) it is the biggest demonstration of love I have ever seen. However, there are some situations involving parents that crack me up...and so, I decided to share with you what I find extremely amusing about parenthood, in three different cultures (Latin-European, urban African and European Anglo-Saxon). Have fun! A teenager decides that the time has come for his voice to be heard, within the family. So, he begins to voice his opinion on issues considered to pertain to adults only. What’s the parents’ reaction? Latin-European Parents : the father turns to the kid and (loudly) says “Shut up! Did anyone ask for your opinion? In this house, when an adult talks kids shut their mouth and listen...!” Urban African Parents ...

Adultery: “The act of sexual intercourse when it involves someone who is married and a person that they are not married to.” (Source: The Cobuild English Dictionary) When a marriage is adulterated (i.e. poor in quality, weak) is adultery necessary or reproachable still? I know, I know…it is a dreadful theme to start the year with; however I thought that since I would have to address the issue someday, I might as well do it now… A marriage is more than a legal contract between two people: it is an agreement of sentiments, commitment, compromise, companionship, loyalty, fidelity, and codes. If a couple is having what is considered, by most, a good marriage and suddenly one of the spouses has a secret affair, then not only the flesh is being swapped but also (and specially) the sentiment, intimacy, bond (and all the other elements described above) are being utterly betrayed. Missive to the Lord

I had planned to discuss Youth this week; however a special event occurred this past weekend and my thoughts were re-directed to a different theme. Plus, I had a conversation with Alexys that encouraged me to share this message with you. I wrote God a missive. I write him a lot of notes (which are carefully written, sealed, locked by fire and then transported to Him by the wind), but this time I wrote a letter; and I am publishing it so that the world testifies my profound gratitude towards Him. “Blessed be the Lord, our God, the God of our forefathers! Hashem, You know who I am (since You are the Creator), You know what goes in my heart and soul; You know my deepest thoughts, and You know that You always come first.
