Spirit of Beacon Day 2008 pictures: Beacon Artists At Large and Beacon's youth sample the future.

Image
Talk about a super soaker. The Spirit of Beacon Parade went off as planned with uncertain weather looming last Sunday.
Here are some images from the Beacon Artists At Large parade entry. As part of a spontaneous collaboration with the Beacon Community Center, some students on one of the Center's afterschool programs drew depictions of what they want to be when they grow up. These drawings were then adapted into a large parade friendly format.

I'm not sure of the true identity of this masked marcher. Perhaps I've seen him before?

On for this weekend.

I'm coming out my cave, having been thoroughly engaged with a heavy workload for the last couple of weeks... so I have a little catching up to do on several fronts.

Anyway, here are a few things on tap for this weekend.
It was announced yesterday that due to the forecast for rain today (which has yet to appear here in Beacon), the COTA event in New Paltz has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Sept 28.

There are two events tonight:
Hermitage is hosting the opening of Mario Lemos: "Aura of Invincibility." (here's a personal aside. As fate would have it, just this week I've taken on the habit of pronouncing the word invincible with a lisp, rendering it invinthible. This cracks me up.)There will be an opening reception tonight from 6-9 pm.

Open Space is hosting Outre Autre - 2 hours of DJ music and 2 hours of videos by Joey Daytona. Below is some footage from the project. The event will run from 6-10pm

Tomorrow, weather permitting, the Spirit of Beacon Day Parade will be happening. This year, Artists at Large which, in the past brought us the Hudson River School Fish heads, and the Tools with legs has teamed up with students from one of the Beacon Community Center's programs, illustrating large scale renditions based on the kids drawings of what they want to be when they grow up.

Spirit of Beacon Day: some images.

Image Here are a few images taken by Matthew Freedman of the "Beacon Artists At Large '07" contribution to the Spirit of Beacon Day Parade, Sept 30, 2007. There are more images on flickr, here.

Image George Mansfield's tape measure evoked the majesty of Princess Di's fairytale wedding and the gentle gregariousness of the turtle from that "can you draw" ad that was always in the TV Guide. I'm just concerned for the #2 pencil to the left. The poor fella looks a bit stiff.

Get into the Spirit. ChopChop.

The Spirit of Beacon Parade is coming up in little more than a week, (Sept 30, in fact) and here's what you need to know, from Jill Reynolds:

The group that brought you "The New Hudson River School" award-winning Spirit of Beacon Day 2004 parade entry, aka the "fish float," invites you to be a part of this year's entry: "Building a Better Beacon." Come as your favorite tool! The choice of tool does not have to be limited to hand tools-- powertools and implements from whatever your trade is are welcome as well, anything that fits in with the idea of "Building a Better Beacon." Kitchen implements, art studio gear, tech gadgets, etc. Also materials would be appropriate, e.g. a brick, a bag of flour, a can/tube of paint, etc. And speaking of materials, anything you want to make it out of is fine. The main thing is that it be recognizable as whatever object you're trying to portray. Differences in scale between tools is okay. This is an open invitation. Please SPREAD THE WORD to whomever youthink might be interested. The more the merrier. Also other floats/marchers are to be enthusiastically encouraged, e.g. there is talk of maybe a tree stump contingent forming (on thetheme of creating a worse Beacon...). Anyone who wants to register a float to be in the parade should call Roy Ciancanelli at 845-831-3027 ASAP. The Spirit of Beacon Day is Sunday Sept 30. The parade is scheduled to begin around 12:30 (based on past experience; will get confirmation on exact time later). Rain date is the following Sunday. Our official "Building a Better Beacon" registration form will be arriving in the mail shortly. For any who are interested, want to jump-start their parade costume, have an idea but are not sure how to go about it, there will be a
TOOL-BUILDING WORKSHOP: SATURDAY SEPT 22 at 10 WILLOW ST. from 1:00-5:00pm
Expertise and free advice on costume-building will be available, as well as free electricity and cheery communal spirit. If you think you might want to participate please call or e-mail (dms.jer@verizon.net) so I have some idea of how many to expect. We will have some tools but please bring whatever tools and materials you have as well, including but not limited to:
CARDBOARD, HOT GLUE GUNS + GLUE STICKS, ELMER'S GLUE, WOOD GLUE, PAINT + BRUSHES, CRAFT MATERIALS like glitter, pom-poms, toothpicks, etc., FABRIC FOAM BOARD, BAMBOO, STRING, UTILITY KNIVES AND BLADES, MEASURING TAPES,
PENCILS, KEEP AN EYE OUT DURING THE WEEK FOR STUFF YOU CAN USE.
