Emad Shihab shared thisDelighted that our work (with Sultan and Latifa) examining the relationship between software quality and SATD received the Most Influential Paper (MIP) award at SANER 2026. The MIP award is given to a paper published at the conference that has had a significant impact over the past decade. This is the third MIP paper for our work on SATD in the last 3 years (ICSME 2024, MTD 2025, and now SANER 2026). We are humbled by the recognition.

Emad Shihab reposted thisEmad Shihab reposted this⏳How much time do software practitioners lose just trying to find repository information? Whether it’s identifying overloaded developers👨💻👩💻 or tracking who introduced more bugs in the code base🐞, the process can be tedious and technical. ⚡⚡In our latest study, we show how combining knowledge graphs with large language models can make repository analytics accessible through natural language. Our participant study found that this approach helps practitioners address most of their repository information needs in less time than other available approaches ⚡⚡ 🚀🚀 This work is a practical approach that helps both developers and non‑technical stakeholders get the information they need, faster and with much less friction. 📖 Read more about this work: https://lnkd.in/e6dq_xfK 🙏 A huge thank you to Dr. Hassan Khatoonabadi, PhD and Prof. Emad Shihab for their guidance and support on this work. #AI #KnowledgeGraphs #SoftwareEngineering #RepositoryAnalytics #DeveloperProductivity #TOSEMSynergizing LLMs and Knowledge Graphs: A Novel Approach to Software Repository-Related Question Answering | ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and MethodologySynergizing LLMs and Knowledge Graphs: A Novel Approach to Software Repository-Related Question Answering | ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology

Emad Shihab liked thisWhat a fantastic 48th International Conference on Software Engineering (#ICSE2026) in Rio de Janeiro. It was busy: In my CAIN: International Conference on AI Engineering - Software Engineering for AI keynote, “Engineering Maturity for AI Adoption: Lessons from Industry,” I shared insights from applying the AI Adoption Maturity Model we developed in collaboration with Accenture. It is very encouraging to see that the urgency of our message is shared: we need institutionalized, repeatable, commonly understood practices and a validated measurement approach to guide AI adoption and maturity. Anita Carleton, Sebastián Echeverría, Robert Edman, John Haller, Carol J. Smith, Rajendra Prasad (RP), Gayathri Pallail, Sarah Dugan, Satyajit "Doc" Doctor Leonardo da Silva Sousa presented our work, “Prompting Without Principles: Are Students Transferring Software Engineering Knowledge to LLM Use?”, examining how early-career developers use LLMs for complex tasks. Our findings is a warning: widespread AI use without strong engineering foundations and effective tool use leads to shallow solutions, over-reliance on tools, and failed systems in the long run. Across the panels I participated in—“SE.next: In the Agentic Trenches” lead by Ahmed E. Hassan and our panel with Paris Avgeriou on “Technical Debt in the AI Era”—there is a consistent message: - AI is changing how we build software, but not the need for software engineering foundational knowledge and discipline. This message applies broadly to all areas influenced by AI, just as it does to software engineering. - Maturity, measurement, & managing #techdebt are becoming even more critical—but new challenges demand equal attention. As Margaret-Anne Storey shared at her TechDebt Conference keynote, AI accelerates the erosion of shared understanding across teams as code is generated faster than understanding is built (cognitive debt), & it amplifies the absence of externalized rationale both by humans and agents (intend debt). As AI use grows, we must manage intent, cognitive, & technical debt together. - The role of the software engineer must evolve to prioritize being a supervisor, evaluator, and system thinker—alongside being a builder. We are changing the tires of a car while driving at 100 miles per hour—but the direction is clear: sustained, trustworthy AI adoption requires intentional practices, not just new tools. An uplifting week indeed—thank you Marcos Kalinowski and Rafael Prikladnicki for an incredibly well organized ICSE, Rodrigo Spínola for a TechDebt Conference packed with thought provoking discussions, #CAIN organizers for the invitation and holding on tight with the much needed focus on software engineering of AI enabled systems, and to everyone I had the privilege to connect with, share ideas, and enjoy a few laughs along the way. #SoftwareEngineering #AI #TechnicalDebt #AIAdoption #GenAIEmad Shihab liked thisMy colleague and friend Ipek Ozkaya gave an excellent keynote at CAIN 2026, the 5th International Conference on AI Engineering, titled "Engineering Maturity for AI Adoption: Lessons Learned." She presented lessons learned on following an empirically-grounded approach to develop a maturity model for AI adoption in partnership with Accenture. The part that really resonated with me was "human in the loop will shift to human in the lead" which essentially means that in the end the human is responsible for AI outcomes. I think this is very important for AI adoption where AI-enabled components are assistants rather than "in charge" of the processes and workflows that they support. Great job! #SEI #CAIN2026

I'm excited to share insights from our community-driven coding education initiative at C2UExpo 2025. This project, a collaboration between The University of Lethbridge Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Public Library, focused on empowering teenagers through accessible coding workshops that build essential STEM capabilities. Programming and technology skills play a critical role in preparing youth for an AI-driven future. By providing foundational coding skills in a supportive, interactive environment, we enabled teens—especially those with limited prior exposure—to become digitally literate, effective problem-solvers, and confident learners. Coding is essential because it serves as the foundation for digital literacy in an increasingly tech-centric world. It equips individuals with the logical thinking, creativity, and critical problem-solving skills necessary to navigate and thrive in diverse professional environments. Furthermore, as automation and artificial intelligence continue to reshape industries, understanding programming principles becomes critical for future career adaptability and success. Promoting coding education early helps close opportunity gaps, especially for underserved communities, by providing equitable access to critical skills. By empowering youth with these competencies, we not only prepare them to participate actively in tomorrow's digital economy but also encourage greater innovation, inclusivity, and economic growth within society. #C2UExpo2025 #CodingEducation #EmpoweringYouth #STEM #AI #FutureReady

Fidus Systems × Carleton Engineering And Design University: shaping the next generation of FPGA innovators. We’re proud to share an early glimpse of an initiative underway with Carleton University — a collaboration designed to bring real-world industry practices, advanced FPGA platforms, and hands-on engineering experience directly into the classroom. Our teams came together on campus to align lab readiness, hardware deployment, and the early planning for Carleton’s new FPGA Drop-In Lab, a space designed to give students deeper access to hands-on learning throughout the year. These first steps set the foundation for a program that gives emerging engineers access to the same adaptive SoC technology and design workflows used across today’s most advanced embedded systems. Expanding our VR development project for organic chemistry education with Dr. Shadi Dalili (University of Toronto) and Kore Meta Inc. Our goal is to create immersive learning experiences that help students better understand challenging concepts, especially spatial reasoning, molecular structure, and reaction mechanisms. This is a continuation of the journey that first brought me into the world of AR/VR applications in chemistry with Dr. Maryam Abdinejad. Our work has continued by Dr.Dalili, and I could not have asked for better collaborators. Thank you Kore Meta Inc. and Chris Yeh for your collaboration as well. #VR #XR #Chemistry #EdTech #STEM #MacEwanU

It is encouraging to see more examples of immersive learning taking hold across post-secondary education. The work by Kore Meta and their partners demonstrates what many of us in this space have been advocating for: when students are given the opportunity to learn through exploration rather than memorization, engagement changes entirely. My own recent research with high school learners has shown the same pattern. When VR is used to teach scientific principles, students remain in the learning environment far longer, ask better questions, and pursue curiosity beyond the point of task completion. This is not about competition. It is about momentum. The more institutions and innovators who help advance immersive learning, the sooner we create educational systems that reflect how students actually learn best. Congratulations to the Kore Meta team and their collaborators. The future of science education is experiential, immersive, and deeply human, and it is promising to see others helping to move the field forward. #VRinEducation #XRinEducation #Education #ImmersiveLearning
